job duties not long enough to train and go over all expectations-thrown into position, demands kept on increasing and not sufficient duties/time expected as advertised. right from start took advantage $ paid out instead of equalizing advertised add.$ managers were in all agreement-the bottom  $ was more important than following rental/labor laws. They eventually agreed to pay out what was equivalent to add but not directly. There were definate words on emails/phone responses to really see character of managers. This job needs to get current, many labor/rental breeches broken and having data to prove, we preferred $ than file claims. The hospitality of guest was rewarding but because front line work and you manage the whole business, you come to the conclusion of taken advantage-slave labor mentality/treatment. Be careful considering this job.

THIS 9-5 JOB REQUIRED IN OFFICE (PHONE, COMPUTER, PERSONAL ONE-ON-ONE)FULL TIME PRESENCE APART FROM THE 3 ANNUAL RECRUITING TRIPS ACROSS CANADA AND THE ONE ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL AGM IN THE US.  CO-WORKERS WERE WARM, APPROACHABLE, ENGAGING AND SUPPORTIVE.  MANAGEMENT WAS COLLEGIAL IN STYLE WHICH ASSUMED THAT A PERSON WORKING AT THIS LEVEL WAS SELF-DIRECTED AND MOTIVATED TO ACCOMPLISH TASKS/EXPECTATIONS OF THE ROLE.  THE HARDEST AND MOST ENJOYABLE PART OF THE JOB WAS THE RECRUITMENT TRIPS BECAUSE IN SPITE OF BEING AWAY FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR THESE EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME IT WAS ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH CONSTITUENT SUPPORTERS AND TO ENGAGE WITH COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR CAREER PLANS AND THE MANY NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES.

Excellent work-culture and friendly environment. 
• Provided administrative support by managing records of all MCCC salaried employees and service workers in the HRIS system by working faithfully with confidential files.
• Assisted in full recruitment process by short listing and pre-screening the potential candidates to identify the required qualifications and skills sets based on the job posting.
• Interviewed candidates with general and behavioral questions and prepared offer letters for new hired and participated on onboarding.
• Assisted in payroll through payworks for bi-weekly payments for all MCCC salaried employees.

The company is top heavy while using volunteers and free stock to sell.  An average shift has 7 managers being well paid.  Volunteers get NOTHING, no wage, no gift card,  no NOTHING.   A lot of donated items are thrown out.  Top brass get everything,  they take an opportunity to take trips, spend and over use volunteers.  A mennonite person disrespects their traditional mennonite family by dressing in clothing that would be good for the entertainment world.  

Everything is demanded a donation.  They use any celebratory day to make staff and volunteers spend money on,  like buy a t-shirt for that day out of your own money.

MCC has been a wonderful place to work. The thrift shop environment is bigger than retail; it’s community development for both volunteers and low income individuals. It’s deep and meaningful interpersonal connections and is the building block for International development. I have found working at MCC to have its challenges but have been met with wonderful opportunities, brillliant and professional leadership and a team of people working to make the world better.

Management style varies and unfortunately many managers lack proper leadership and communication skills. A lot of turnover in the organization makes it hard to envision staying and investing for a long time. Because of previous hiring practices, you are still expected to leave the organization to learn new skills in order to apply for a more advanced position instead of having a program of leadership development within the organization.

I don't know what they (Ann and Jan) expected.  I worked through most of my breaks and kept up with the younger staff but in the end was still told I was too slow. Ann had it out for me from the beginning.  My first day my supervisor told me to wait by the truck k for him and that he would be right back. The next day I got hauled into the office and scolded like a school child for standing around.  It was my first few hours on the job. I didn't even know what was going on yet. 

MCC was a welcoming place to work. I found I could strike up a conversation with anyone in the hallway or lunch room. Mcc is very intentional to act with integrity and to accomplish their vision. I felt supported by management and valued within the organization. There was room for creativity and new ideas. At the same time, you’re part of a worldwide mission of reconciliation. 

work with staff who are dealing with a wide range of social programs and issues locally and world wide. learned a lot about social issues around the world; learned about the challenges of NGO management.  met interesting people who are caring, motivated and socially engaged. 

The work was purposeful, but the difficult part was that the work was stressful at times. Management was very supportive. I enjoyed my work immensely and would recommend this organization to anyone looking for work that is meaningful. If you can have good boundaries with your work/life balance it can work!
