Staff being required to swipe in and out with time cards at the beginning and end of each day and during lunch hours is awful and infantilizing. You also only get half an hour for lunch. You’re paid in 15 minute increments, so if you swipe in a single minute late, you’re not paid until the next 15 minute increment starts. The pay is also well below market average, but the job is at least fairly easy and stress free with a good work-life balance. You’re expected to pay for your own parking at a minimum of $15 a day. 

You can be let go from your position at any time with no heads up, prior warnings, or discussions about your job performance or any potential issues. Staff and lawyers will lie to your face, in fact. Oh, but on the plus side, you can miss at least one day of work every week for various nonsense reasons for 6+ months and still keep your job, so I suppose the job security does exist for some. Don’t work here. 

I would never recommend this place to anyone for work. Worst firm culture I could ever work in. So much politics going around with each other . People are insecure about each other . Management never values their team members. Worst management someone could ask for. This firm only thinks about their own money and doesn’t care about employees. 
Legal assistant are not at all professional, they talk about other clients in front of the other clients loudly. 
Working at this law firm will lead you in a lot of mental health issues . So much discrimination to the co worker if they don’t like that co worker . The most toxic environment someone could ever ask for. 

The Calgary branch has lost over 5 lawyers in  1 month which lead to the layoffs of most of the support staff. Merchant Law made no effort to hire new lawyers or to try and secure the staff's employment. Everyone was left in the dark about the changes and at last minute they laid everyone off.
The work environment was tense as there were office bullies and absolutely no management within in the firm.  
The pay at Merchant Law was not good at all. Barely make over minimum wage and you have to fight for any increase in pay.
The hardest part of the job was having very little support and training.

The individual lawyers are good to work for and are knowledgeable and skilled and willing to share their knowledge.

There is a casual work environment but maybe too much so.

There seems to be a lack of management willingness to address conflict.

Very little benefit by way of salary or health plans they are average at best.

i only rated it one star as Zero Stars was not an option.

the incredibly toxic people.

toxic and stressful. would not reccomend

be stressed at work, get bullied, go home and cry.

If I could give this company a 0 out of 10 I would . Awful people work there and no training what’s so ever given and they will let you go on short notice without discussing anything with you before hand and met the rudest paralegal I’ve ever had the displeasure of working with in my life I would not recommend. 

Would not allow administrative staff tio have the controls necessary within software to do their job in a timely manner. Lots of red tape, administrative support has limited ability to manage their priorities, and clients suffer.

I was hired to help catch up the law firm with paperwork. I enjoyed the staff who gave me the direction I needed, and we were all sad when my time ended there. A great and open bunch.  

While the lawyers were fantastic, the HR was not. Often had to argue to get a roll of tape or to get simple HR things done, such as signing up for benefits, etc.

Big company with a small family feel. Very knowledgeable lawyers who are dedicated to helping their clients succeed no matter what. Very good pay and excellent job security.
