Metalumen Manufacturing Inc

As an engineering summer student at Metalumen, I learned a lot about engineering in a manufacturing environment. For the duration of my time at Metalumen, the engineering manager I worked under was an excellent leader and mentor. When approached, this manager would always take the time and provide amazing guidance. In addition to an excellent engineering manager, my mentor that I worked closely with on projects taught me a lot about the fast paced world of manufacturing engineering. 
The engineering department's work culture was great and the people were awesome to work with! I really enjoyed the Friday lunch breaks!
The toughest part about the job was selling new ideas to some of the older engineers. As I found them to be resistant to change. However, once sold on the ideas they were great to work with. Overall though, Metalumen was a great place to work!

It's been a few years since I worked there but I'm sure nothing's changed. 
- The most unorganized company I have ever worked for! The supervisors, plant manager and owner were on different pages.
-  Almost everyone (at least in the press department) had been written up for something.
- If you became drinking buddies with the top dog(s) you could get away with anything.. If not then you were treated like garbage!
- 10% of the people did 90% of the work..
- Did I mention it was very unorganized?
- Training didn't exist.. And if you did get trained on a machine like a press brake then the higher powers expected you to be a pro in less than a week.
- Intimidation tactics all day long.
- And the owner would come out during the afternoon shift (only a handful of workers) and try and tell you how to do your job.

The only positive was most of my co-workers were alright.. aside from a small handful.

Prepare for morning meeting to discuss days events
Work in final assembly collecting time to do jobs
Write up findings
Work with Lead hand and Team lead to improve on the steps noted to make the work easier thereby allowing the operator to go faster

The people I worked with on the floor were great.  They would all try anything to see if it improved their work.

The hardest part of the job was figuring out what the owner/president was going to want from day to day.  His micromanaging was impossible to work with.

The most enjoyable was making a change which made the work easier and seeing the look on the operators face knowing that the struggles they used to have are gone (for that unit at least).

Typical day consists of being micro managed all day long, nothing you do is right and nothing is good enough. The supervisors aren't bad but the management is. The hardest part of the job is being made to feel like you are worthless garbage. The best part of the job is the coworkers, they are great people and will help you if you need it. You will learn working here that quality and doing a good job doesn't matter in the real world, all that matters is mass produces products with no standards.

I worked for Metalumen for roughly 7 years. My beginning seemed very optimistic, within a year I saw the true dynamic.  Most of the people are amazing. The management is another story. With extreme downsizing the majority of staff report directly to the owner ( those who don't still have to deal with his condescension and backlash). Takes "continuous improvement" to a extreme level and nothing you ever do it good enough.

Unfortunately, it was a bad experience, even for the short time I was there. Besides old culture by most current workers, the management (owner) it was not pleasant. At the beginning, it was fine, but after two weeks its seems he has serious issues about trust people or let them bring great or new ideas to improve work. That is why the turnover is so high. There is no career or any chance of that. A family company, which probaly will end when the sons take over.

working at Metalumen was a great time for me, my co-works were alot of fun, my supervisor was very easy to get along with, just my job title it self was something i really enjoyed doing, learning how to use all the tools and the spot welding machine and the hand grinder was really neat, i loved that this job was hands on and i learned alot in my time there, and the wage was very nice to start at also.

No innovation! Challenging environment. Slow moving organisation with little direction. Family run business and promotions are to family members only. Great social programs and incentives.

Its a descent place to work. Although I found the management and HR department were not really there for you as an employee. The work itself was challenging and fun to learn but seemed to be alot of favouritism and childishness out on the floor...

Do yourself a favour and avoid working here. The management is horrible, the pay is terrible and the coworkers are unhelpful. There are no standards at this company. The owner ruins it for everyone on so many levels.
