Working for BC Timber Sales in this location, Dawson Creek, BC, provided a lot of insight into the many forms of resource extraction and the conflicts that may arise between each industry.  I was able to work closely with professionals in the field of forestry for a government regulated employer. Each day of work entailed a lot of safety precautions, organization and timeliness of work. 

This was my first position that entailed field work and I learnt a lot this summer about data collection, entry and technique.  One of the main projects that I worked on was during the tree planting season, where one other coworker and I were responsible from the beginning of the season, to the end, for managing several teams of planters, ordering trees, planting check and safety monitoring of field crews.  In addition to this, I had the chance to learn how to do other silviculture surveys, including site assessment, regeneration and free growing surveys.

The best part of the position was being able to recognize the opportunities available within the ministry, especially in that location, as well as meeting and working with my co-workers who were experts in their field.  The hardest part was having to leave when I knew there was more work to be done and knowing they wanted me to stay.

I spend most of my day in paperwork. Very supportive employer in the branch levels. Large workload and pressures at times. Hard to get ahead in the organization though. It's hard to move into a new higher classification without tons of schooling and it's impossible to know whether or not you'll enjoy the job without trying it out to know whether the schooling is worth while or not and it seems the days of giving someone a temporary appointment in a position to see how they do is long gone. Promotion from within as a result of hard work is a thing of the past. With a young family, my time is valuable and I need to know I'm investing in education that will move me into a better position that I can be passionate about - without the opportunity to trial the position, it's hard to know whether or not that's where I'd want my career to go.

Each day started with either testing a particular online technical application (Financial Applications) as this was a Financial Help Desk. Most phone calls in a day invited new learning opportunities. Each person who called or emailed us were looking for help with how to get access to a particular computer application; how to navigate it or they had an error message. Very much like being a detective. I enjoyed the interaction with people and resolving their issues. The hardest part was not being able to help because it was out of my skill range or simply out of my hands. But evern having to pass it up to a higher level helped me learn.

Perfect job for puppy makers and dumbies. Management are inept, staff are lazy, incompetent fools, executive are yuppies know it alls that don’t deserve the pay. Ministers are NDP hacks running the budget bag dry With no definitive approach to managing anything.  Most employees only work a 100 days a year if you can call it work staring at a computer screen and pretending to be busy.  The rest of the time they are off.

I was employed with the ministry for a one year contract. The work was tedious, but the team was very supportive. Coworkers and management were awesome, flexible, easy to approach. That said, I believe the hiring process within the BC Public Service is corrupt and needs to be addressed. I was very lucky to get in through an internship, since then I have not been successful in getting passed the screening process despite being qualified.

Very clicky! Supervisor would spend time socializing and counseling family and friends on the phone and yell at me to answer phones even when I was already on a line with a client. Filing of documents was done by all but if a mistake was made, the new person got the blame. If you didn’t spend every waking moment working and socializing with co workers you were an outsider.

Bullying and Intimidation is common place. If you don't go along with the group you will singled out and targeted. Opportunities for advancement are very limited if have independent mind. Unfortunately zero support from the union. 

Being a wild land fire fighter is rewarding and it keeps me physically fit, but there is no time for myself, friends or family over the contracted 7 months. I enjoy working outside and the people are work with are always amazing. By the end of the summer my body is physically and mentally exhausted but it is definitely worth it.

Many projects working in a bush environment which I've always enjoyed. Dealing with governments is always were you need to be on your game.

working in northern community, has its advantages, however the winters can be harsh. Managemant team let you do your job, and productivity was the bonus to success.
