You're on your feet a lot so good foot wear essential be in good physical condition, do not bring your phone in. leave it at home. you will be in care custody and control of inmate population, you will be unlocking doors cells rooms all day, supervising all movement, preparing inmates for courts programs work details, release and admit. Theres lots of noise smells and sometimes nasty things to see, (ie: blood, injury, death, feces,) if you are easily offended or nauseated at the sight of blood, maybe its not for you. Its a long day but usually its a rewarding feeling at the end of each shift and most look forward to work. Dont get involved in gossip. Hardest part of the job, being present for traumatic experience, such as death overdoses fights officer assaults, etc. This doesn't happen every day and mostly rare but can happen at a moments chance. The most enjoyable : camaraderie, the fun days like bb ques team bonding days, the friendships.  It is a semi militant position so there is a sense of pride that goes along with this job, its what YOU make of it. I got 20 yrs in and I love my job. Its a great career or a good stepping stone for those looking to become a police officer.  I do recommend the position to the ones that love to be professional and have excellent demeanor and deportment. if you don't make it the first try don't give up, keep trying. Good luck 

While the role itself is not expected to be glamorous, the internal work environment often lacked professionalism. Interpersonal dynamics at times felt more like a popularity-based culture than a structured workplace, and management appeared inconsistent in its leadership approach, which created tension between staff and supervisors.

Employees can remain classified as “casual” for extended periods—sometimes five years or more. Although turnover has slowed, this seems less related to improvements in working conditions and more connected to organizational restructuring that limits opportunities for full-time positions. The team includes many hardworking and supportive individuals, but there are also employees who take advantage of the system without apparent accountability.

Staff are provided with tools and protocols intended to support them in their roles; however, when those tools are used in practice, employees may still face criticism or negative feedback. This inconsistency can be confusing and discouraging.

Financially, this job was helpful and allowed me to move forward in my life. That said, the overall work environment had a noticeable impact on my mental well-being over time—something I only fully recognized after leaving. The challenges were not solely related to the job duties themselves, but also to the workplace culture and lack of consistent support.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
1. Fixed term contracts. Usually a year long with possible extension, no guarantees. 
2. Fixed term employees do not get paid for holidays, sick days or vacation time as permanent employees do.
3. Union bargaining for increase in wages took 3 years to complete. As of 2023 employees were paid wages agreed upon in the collective agreement from 2021. Long wait to increase of wages.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Happy, good sense of humour, enjoy coming to work 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Fast paced, busy, sometimes filling in for others who have called on sick.

I did not have an issue performing my duties with inmates; my difficutly was with abuses I witnessed by other officers, with lack of support, social isolation, and marginalization I was exposed to when my daughter died under tragic circumstances.  I found it to be a place of authoritarian personalities where percieved attitudes and behaviours of inmates were perpetuated by sytemic abuses by frontline officers.  It was an environment where empathy is viewed as a weakness,  I found I could not help people there.  I found it to be a place that emphasis punishment, not correction.  The term "Corrections Officer" is an oxymoron; Punishment Applicator seems more appopriate.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is no best part to this job. 
Admins are low level politicians at best and and provide little to no support to front line staff. Inmates have all the rights.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The start of my shift and seeing the slugs I am working with.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
TOXIC x100. Everyone looks out for themselves. It’s like high school for adults.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Can’t wait to see what admins let the inmates away with to avoid a headline on the news.

I lasted a month 
Because you have to compete for your position you compete with other cooks that are already in the kitchen, when they lose to you they treat you like garbage 
I was constantly made fun of, picked on and called names by the people I worked with 
My manager was great! He was very understanding and very kind 
I couldn’t work in a toxic environment like this anymore, oh and if you don’t mind losing half your pay cheque to union dues. Pension and taxes then yeah. It’s a great job, also there’s absolutely no cooking involved just heating things up, and watching inmates, I needed to cook as well

Fabulous people to work with. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There was really no stress. Some travel required but in reality...all good.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Lots of remote work. Office environment was usually quiet on Mondays and Fridays. People were always friendly.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Worked in various different remote locations throughout the south east and north west zones in Ontario. Supervised and managed field installations and gathered inventory data.

Sometimes programs are created to meet political goals rather than rationally thought out.
This position was an extremely demanding and rewarding opportunity which involved applying most of the skills attained in undergraduate and graduate education.
It was exciting  making a program work.  Unfortunately the underfunding required too many personal sacrifices for my children to be able to continue it for an extended length of time.

Unsupportive management team and workplace bullying. Low moral. There is lack of orientation. You're expected to know the role with little to no training and when you make a mistake, staff/ management will make sure you know about it in an accusatory fashion. Always short staffed, lack of physicians for the amount of inmates and their complex needs. Nurses are overworked with no support. The turn over rate is high. The ministry needs to look into the health care issues here as well as the nursing management team.

The lack of adherence to policies by senior managers.

Toxic and entrenched with harassment, discrimination and bad culture.
