I worked with Modern Beauty for just over 1 year. I did enjoy the job my first few months because I avoided all red flags. I didn’t get my first pay just over a month after I started working, and living in BC, that is not doable. Modern Beauty loves to act like they care about their employees and their mental health but that is far from the truth. I have never been so stressed and anxious working for a company. They expect so much from you, and expect you to be there whenever they need you for only minimum wage. They tell us we are not aloud to discuss our pay and that is because they pay everyone differently, and they will trick people into becoming managers since they can’t find any employees who will stay, and they barely even pay managers liveable wages. When you try to talk to HR about a more liveable wage, they will just tell you no and that you are not worth a raise because you are not selling enough. You are only aloud to book two days off a month, and even then that’s pushing it. They will also have you working in different showrooms and locations but will not tell you so until you are hired. You are honestly expected to be cleaning every inch of the showrooms and if you don’t because you are busy with customers or other work, you will be yelled at. I have talked to staff that have been there for years and they all agree that Management pushes all the good, and hard working employees away. They truly are a terrible company to work for, the only perk is your discount. There are a few lovely people who work there, but that doesn’t take away that the owners and some other management treat showroom employees horribly. Every person who has left have all had the same reasons. The mental toll this place puts on you is not worth the pay. 

I’ll start off by saying that the only good thing about working for modern beauty is the free food and they are pretty flexible with vacation times(sometimes). 

The way they pay their employees is extremely sketchy and makes absolutely no sense. I expressed concerns to the HR person and the district manager and every time it was “oh it’s supposed to be that way”. Don’t expect to her your first pay check till about a month after you start working there.

You have to attend a trial day at the store you’re supposed to work at without any pay or guarantee you will get the job. 

Pay is extremely low and you will get treated like you are stupid if you ask for a raise no matter your experience or how long you have been with the company.

Head office is extremely poor at communication and have no plan on changing that. You are a money maker to them and that’s it. They will tell you “we are always here to help if you have questions” then you ask a question and they treat you like you’re stupid. 

Very high turnover rate all over the company at all stores. Which usually results in the rest of the remaining employees working 6-7 days a week with no overtime pay. The only people that stick around are stylists for the discount.

No one will train you on the specifics but will expect you to know everything within your first month.

Not an idea place to work if you have any type of anxiety as this place will trigger it 24-7.

I currently enjoy my work with Modern Beauty as a Store Manager and know it’s faced paced  private retail environment so the family is big but your team is small. 
Some stores don’t have a Store Manager so sometimes I have to fix issues for other surrounding areas. You do hold many responsibilities as a manager and there are many perks of being a person of leadership among others. This company is very organized and advanced more than others. Their technology and how to connect with the other stores including Regional Managers and Store Director are available and that’s how to be one of Canadas Best Managed Companies. There are many gifts and freebies if you like beauty supplies. Many contests for various cash and prizes for prize winners and have the best client services I ever seen. The company as a whole has great opportunities, they just hired new managers and store leads within the company so it’s really expanding. Work culture is great and they care about their staff. Modern beauty has really made me grow in unexpected ways. Thanks Modern Beauty :)

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I have worked at Modern for over a year and I've never been more overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated.

The worst part about this job was the cleaning. You are expected to clean the entire store every month, and also mop, sweep, and scrub the floors everyday. They don't hire cleaners so their employees are expected to do all of it as part of your job. I was so exhausted each week. 

You must stand for 8 hours a day, we weren't allowed to sit at all, even if the store isn't busy. 

Training is short and doesn't prepare you for the actual work. You are expected to figure it out on your own or call management which is practically non existent and if they even do pick up they will treat you like you're stupid.

They were very understaffed with a high turnover rate. My schedule rarely left me with two days off in a row. Most of the time I would work 4 days in a row with only one day off and then another 3-4 days back to work again which is extremely exhausting and they don't do anything about it to change it even though I've complained. 

I had the unfortunate pleasure of being victimized by those whom enjoy telling fictional stories.  This is the worst experience i have ever had and i cannot urge you enough to stay away. 

I was hired to be the Sales Manger for BC and after 5 days they decided to fire me on a Saturday morning VIA text message - YES, A TEXT MESSAGE!  No real explanation was given, but i found out that office people did not like the fact i knew what i was talking about.  They might have felt intimidated by my knowledge of computer systems, procedures and their client lists, as i had been in the business for years prior to joining their team.  Office people took it as; not being serious and i was even called "unprofessional" - wait, like that text message from the director on a Saturday morning?

There's no HR department in this company and it sure shows.  I wish i could leave my name and number here, so i could tell everyone more, but i'll just say this:  STAY AWAY!  For those whom work for the company - RUN AWAY!

Super shady business, non existent management, horrible pay, uneducated head office.  Never felt supported there. When covid hit a family member had gotten it and I had been around them so I had to self isolate for the 2 weeks which was suggested in March. I wasn’t done my 3 month probation and when I was supposed to come back to work they fired me. When I asked what the reason was, so I could work on it in the future, the person said that it wasn’t a good fit, when it literally was , nobody ever sat down and gave me a review or told me I was doing anything wrong , absolutely no communication, when I kept pressing for the reason, she said cause of my schedule  which is shady, as I was hired as a student, part time, and I was working 4 days a week? Also nobody from management asked me if I could increase my hours since school was out for covid . Super shady - I know they let me go due to not wanting to pay the extra person.i would look else where for work ,  not a company that cares for their employees

Pros: If you’re a true hunter sales representative, Modern could be your perfect fit. It’s contractual, so no benefits and commission only, but if you’re aggressive enough, the income potential is endless and some people make a lot of money. Modern also offers great company discounts and good education. 
Cons: The company has split in two to accommodate two brands that won’t be sold together in the same distribution house so there are two sales forces in the same company, working the same territory. This of course is a recipe for disaster for commission sales reps as they sell many of the same items and some people have very little integrity, it’s basically dog eat dog. This can create a lot of hostility especially when you work together and attend the same functions, training etc. Overall though, if you love the beauty industry and have a more aggressive approach, I’d say go for it. 

The absence of managers made it difficult to address issues and receive guidance, making the work environment stressful and unmanageable. With all my coworkers quitting and some even walking out in the middle of their shift, I found myself working alone most of the time, feeling overwhelmed and unsupported. This situation led to feelings of exploitation, as I had to handle the workload meant for a team by myself.  In addition, the entitlement and snobbishness received from customers only added to the stress. Overall, my time at Modern Beauty was marred by these circumstances, impacting my job satisfaction and well-being.

Worked for the company for almost 2 years, took my 2 weeks for MY WEDDING- come back the first day from my wedding and they fired me and refused to pay severance... my manager quit after 6 months and they never hired one again. Got paid minimum wage for 2 years and had 6 years of esthetic experience... never got offered a raise. Schedule always sucked. Works every holiday. PAY IS SKETCHY AND SUSPICIOUS!!’ they pay you in The most confusing way and you can’t understand your pay stub. All Family owners and family run, so to stand up for yourself for unfair treatment to management just gets you into trouble, they didn’t care when a coworker was being racist mad bullying me For 6 months!!! Worst place I’ve ever worked so unprofessional!!! I feel bad for the next person who goes there, it won’t last long.

The WORST company to work for. Pay is garbage and the pay structure is even worse. No manager, and upper management is a joke. Customers are rude and always mad at you because head office changes their policy every other day depending on the client. No support and when you need help they make you feel stupid. They will work you to the bone with no remorse and no incentives. They don't pay properly, and if you're here a minute longer than your scheduled shift, they will not be paying. The pay structure is sketchy and is set up so it's hard to track if you're getting the proper pay. You will also get written up for discussing pay since they pay everyone differently, and no, not based on experience. They're manipulative and don't care about your wellbeing. McDonalds is a better job. seriously.
