Modern Landfill

Executives love to say Modern is a family company and safety is the number one priority. Profit is number one. The Canadian division is an unsupported side project 

Management is disconnected but puts forth some effort when forced.

Supervisors are pretty fair and advocate for their drivers. Not always great communicators. 

Dispatch is understaffed. Drivers often left hanging. Radio system is bad. 

Sales is out of touch. They say yes to customers and then wash their hands of it. Paid commission a sale is a sale.

Shop is ridiculously understaffed. Nice people anyway. 

Fleet is aging. Constant problems throughout. Multiple trucks out of service daily. More work and drivers than the fleet can support. 

Drivers are an okay group. Lots of salty people. Some don’t mind yelling about it. Mostly good attitudes and helpful. Lots of personalities.

Everyone is trying to do their job and go home to pay their bills. A job is a job.

Benefits good could be better, CBA needs work, wages are decent for drivers don’t know about other departments. Hours are there and sometimes to much.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Drivers are a fantastic crew.  Dispatch crew does their best to accommodate calls.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management has a high expectation and do not fully understand the duties of the workers. Only want correct answers, not the correct answers.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
All try to work together for their final goals at the end of the day.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Office work is constant and is steady but repetative.

A typical work day here is great; you come in and do your job to the best of your ability without supervision. I have learned how to time manage my self quite well.
The people here that you work with all have amazing personalities, however management is always fighting and it trickles down to the lower levels. The hardest part of the job is the lack of support, no mater how well or how poor you are doing it just does not seem to be noticed.
The most enjoyable part of the job are your co-workers and clients which you work with.

Typical day started at 6:30am, worked until anywhere from 2-6pm.(8:30pm in the Fall)
I learned patience.
Management was great in St.Catharines. The South Niagara Supervisor was awful.
The culture was great. I got along with almost everyone.
The harest part was loading garbage and organics all day, in all kinds of weather.
The most enjoyable part was getting myself in great shape, and working with a great crew.
I worked curbside when they had the Niagara contract. Loved working in St.Catharines everyday.

The Maintenance Dept & Dispatch Dept work hand in hand & side by side with harmony. Supervisors & Managers in these departments are knowledgeable & fair.

HR Manager has no Transportation background, yet she was given complete say in the running of departments that she has no knowledge or experience in ~ making compliance issues a nightmare.

Plenty of overtime if you want it or not ( is mandatory). Management and supervisor go home at 4pm will you keep working. Money is ok but low for the industry. Great place to learn and move on after 6 months. Plenty of promises that it will get better but nothing ever gets done. Co workers are hard working and generally cool to be with. At least you are home ever night.

Modern Landfill is a good work place. Supervisor works with people suffering with challenges in and out of the workplace. They try their best yo keep their trucks in working order. There is an open atmosphere for discussion when it comes to health and safety. 


Modern was a great place to work 10 years ago. Management has changed over the years and changed the work environment. You have no say in the hours you want to work. All or nothing. Better jobs out there. 

No room for advancement in company. Communication among staff Needs improvement.    Difficulty in each role's duties.  Underpaid And Do not feel appreciated for the work you do. Companies culture also needs improvement

If you are not a golden child you get treated like dirt
Very long days, they run you over your driving hours.
Safety is out the door.
I do not recommend working for this company
