Mr. Pretzels

It really does depend on your location. Almost every store has a different owner, so it will really depend who owns the store. For me, though, it is an awesome, fun job.

First of all, the interview and first days: relatively easy, questions from Google, basically... what you know about the store... at that time, the store hadn’t even open yet. I got a call a couple days later with information and was trained on one of the first days we opened by a trainer from corporate office. He was kind, knowledgeable and really good at motivating the team. (I like to think I was pretty much a pro after a week, but really, I’m still learning new things a year later.)

Back pre-Covid, there were a lot more hours; and a lot more business, but that has really slowed down, so we usually do shifts of 6-7 hours for 1-2 people/day. Usually weekends are a lot busier than weekdays, so you have more to do and more stress. On weekdays, it can be boring at times, but if you find something to tidy up or to do during your down-time; it’s quite enjoyable.

The job requires a lot of standing, and a decent amount of physical strength, but you get used to it after a while. It all takes practice, though. It took me a few months to really start getting the hang of things, so don’t give up.

The store owners are incredible. They are kind, generous, helpful, and very approachable. Yes, you will sometimes get critique or pointers, but that’s not because they hate you or because they want to point out your flaws; it’s because they want you to become a better worker, and they want you to succeed.

After only a year, I have become a shift lead, a key holder and a trainer, which is really awesome. It shows responsibility and leadership, which is great if you eventually want to move on and go further in life.

The schedule is very flexible as a casual worker; I can do homework, school, and other extracurriculars, and work 10-15 hours a week. If I ever have a busy week ahead, the owners are more than happy to give you a week off, but don’t abuse this, or else they may think you don’t like the job!

For me, it’s been a really great first job; and it’s been a pleasure to be working at Mr. Pretzels.

I worked at mr pretzels for 7 months, in that time I saw so many unethical handlings of customer and employee complaints. The actual manager doesn’t vet his people, my old kiosk manager  had 0 experience and it shows, she can not even roll a pretzel correctly. She hired her brother whom also is awful at his job but yet gets better shifts??? Ah the nepotism. 
 Upon my interview I was told that the hardest workers are the ones that get the best hours, this is completely untrue as it became clear that there was very little communication between the manager of the kiosk and her boss. Or she would just flat out lie. My other coworkers would consistently show up late, and once they did show up would automatically leave to go for a smoke and when they returned had no sense of urgency even if we had a line up of people. These managers and the people that run these kiosk are crooks and they make way to much money for the minimal amount of work they put in. The labour board is being notified to hopefully put an end to their corrupt system and dishonesty and in hopes of saving a teenager or anyone else from having to waste their time on putting in effort at this place.

I worked at Mr. Pretzels while it was still a corporate business. Someone from head office took me on and we worked together always. Working with head office was a lot better then when the new franchisee took over. When the franchisee took over, everything went down hill. He hired his own people and they took my job duties away from me ut kept my title as supervisor, although i still completed these duties, i no longer had a say in anything because i was a female. We lost our original 12 staff members, and they quit because of the manager himself being disrespectful, ignorant, and unorganized. It is not a diverse or respectful place. They constantly preach diversity and how they treat their employees like family, but in reality that is not at all what they do. They hire THEIR OWN FAMILY, and treat them with respect but anyone outside their race is nothing to them. After leaving Mr. Pretzels from my supervisor position, i found out that 75 people completely boycotted Mr. Pretzels because of horrible customer service, unsafe, unsanitary and unhealthy workplace, expired food, etc.
I do not recommend Mr. Pretzels, Barrie, to a single person.

Because it is such a big chain, your own experiences may differ from location to location and from manager to manager. For me, the managers are very nice, laid-back, and very approachable. They make sure their employees have what they need and always respond to any questions we have quickly, even through text or email. The hours are very flexible, so I can work only a shift or two while in high school. The job is easy, but it can get a bit stressful if there’s a line up of people. I enjoyed the stress, though. My coworkers were all very professional, capable and kind; always playing their part in operations. After each shift, we could take home any leftovers which is always nice. Salary was just over minimum wage, but was very fair, considering I had no job experience, and still in high school. Overall, it’s been a joy to work at Mr. Pretzels, and, if you happen to find good managers, like I did, you’ll have a great time.

The location I worked at was fun because of the people there. Management was not great at all, but it was light and flexible so theres that. Monthly pay wages. You have to double check you pay cheques because sometimes the managers can mess it up, whether its underpaying or overpaying you. The job is very easy, but that means if you plan on sticking around for a while it gets very very old (unless you have fun people to work with like I usually did). Usually they have a very small staff so that can make it hard to switch shifts and things like that, but that makes it easy for you to get good hours. They pay minimum wage and don't give you raises so there's no incentive to stick around in the long term.

I enjoyed the people I worked with and I enjoyed the different change of paces.
I learned how to work with different personalities and how to be a leader when need be.
The management was accommodating to the employees needs.
The workplace culture was good, everyone knew where the company started.
The hardest part was dealing with the difficult customers but that happens on a rear occurrence. Having those experiences were a learning lesson every time and I have more of a knowledge dealing with those sorts of customers. 
The most enjoyable were the employees. They made work fun and I have made life long friends.

Good first job. Easy enough, but you also get to experience customer service and different types of customers and tasks. Don't be afraid to ask questions while learning. The kiosk can either be extremely busy with a line that goes on for an hour or there can be zero traffic for an hour too. Typically busier on weekends as expected. Management is fine as long as you do your work and don't slack off. Family run so the team consists mainly of the bosses and a handful of other employees.

The people I worked with are extremely friendly and outgoing. They were helpful and patient when I was still learning the ropes. I learnt how to make the dough for pretzels, how to roll them, how to cook them in the oven as well as how to dress and serve them to customers. The hardest part about the job was having to deal with the franchise owner who was at times, rude not only to customers but also to my coworkers and I. Another hard part was keeping up with the weekend rush where the line up and become as long as 20 people or even more. Other than that, everything about the job was great.

Mr. Pretzels was a good place to work as a part-time job, with me being in school full-time. A typical day at work would include making and serving pretzels, then cleaning up at the end of the day. Management unfortunately did not treat their employees with the respect they deserved, but what're you gonna do. The hardest part of the job is the holidays. Naturally, the mall gets very busy, thus, the pretzel shop does as well. The most enjoyable part of the job would be the people I worked with.

This was one of my favourite jobs I've had, it is definitely a great first job. It wasn't too busy and the tasks were pretty simple. Shifts were pretty consistent until they weren't. I started working at the store I worked at when it first opened. I was the first one of the new hires to show up on my first shift so I was formally trained by one of the higher ups and then I was left to show everyone else what to do. A month or so into my employment there, all of the new hires were no longer given shifts and replaced with other people. No explanation other than "there is no shifts for you anymore." No notice or anything.
