Muskoka Brewery

For the most part its a decent place to work but its one of those places that likes to tell you they care about work life balance but expect that "balance" to favour work. Being a brewery, there are lots of events and whatnot and you'll be expect you to volunteer for them. Which is fine but you won't get promotions if you don't volunteer. As an example I was told to go to a technical conference 4.5 hours away for two days for which I would not be paid travel expenses because as a manager told me "it will be fun so why would we pay you to go?". I didn't go, and was later told if I had gone I would be more likely to get a promotion. There are a ton of events happening on a regular basis there that are often after hours, and if you're not volunteering to help run them you are looked down on by management.

Another issue was that if the brewery ran into technical issues that paused production, I would be told by a manager to go home and either take unpaid days or use vacation days. This was a regular occurrence and you couldn't really plan for them. There was a period of close to two years where nearly all my vacation days went to cover these events and management didn't care at all.

Brewers like me worked a shift rotation, you were either on days, afternoons, or nights. Most night shifts there were only two people in the building all night, so we were told we couldn't leave the building for any reason and leave the other person alone. It meant though that you couldn't really take a real lunch break. If I wanted to go home for my break I couldn't.

Also if you were on afternoon shift, if production was ahead of schedule you'd be told to come in early on Friday sometimes day of.  It meant you couldn't really plan your life around Fridays because you had no idea until Thursday night or Friday morning what time your shift was going to start. When I complained about that I was just told this was actually a perk. 

Management sucks at communication. The beer is pretty bad because they're just focused on making it cost less to make. Any job on the production side of the brewery is going to be miserable almost instanly. If you're applying to work in sales you'll be treated well. A lot of people have been leaving the company for the past 3 years. 



I absolutely loved my experience at Muskoka Brewery. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. If you love craft beer, I highly recommend landing a job here. 

Management only develops and recognizes those they like.  There is a clear line between "just production" and everyone else.  Turn-over is high and mostly in production.  Not a family oriented place, most of us have families but that does not matter in production.

Very stressful work environment. Job could be great if the leadership team would take the time to actually understand what they expect from the people who make the product. Company is more about sales and marketing than brewing bear. I think they have lost sight of what it means to be a craft brewery. Not enough staff to fill the growth they expect. 


Muskoka Brewery is a forward thinking, cutting edge craft brewery with excellent products and people. The management is always pushing for higher standards, new innovations and new ways to go to market. It is a great place to work and grow your beer knowledge.
