A typical work day was dealing with Customer service supervision, handling complaints from home owners, training new staff, making making sure call escalation protocols were adhered to when dealing with emergency client calls, handling billing issues, opening, closing accounts, tracking client accounts, handled accuracy of cross checking reference regarding data entry, scheduled staff breaks, monitored client files to make sure information on file was accurate, updated and correct, Conducted meetings, with staff and upper management to meet fast paced demands of Contractor installations, and Sales team performances. handled cold calling, out going/incoming calls. 

I learned to make sure Customer service staff adhered to treating elderly clients respectfully, and following up on client information, by staff members was an essential  part of the business running effectively.

Management was very approachable, and listened to any concerns at hand. 

Work place culture was dependable, fast paced, and flexible.

The hardest part of the job was scheduling breaks, at times when staff called out last minute. 
 
The most enjoyable part of the job, was being a team player, communicating with clients, staff and management, and being driven in a fast paced environment.

Having worked in London hospitals and being given excellent progression opportunities I thought that this was across all NHS trusts. How very wrong I was. 
There is very limited progression in Cornwall rarely band 7 posts and if there is management have staff members earmarked for it regardless of the  " equal opportunities for all". Believe me I have seen it first hand. There is very limited staff in some settings  as it appears the NHS does not get a level up finding that other areas get. Work is piled on you with an expectancy that you will take it home. 
Training is always offered but never given due to time restraints and staff shortages. 
NHS in Cornwall is about who you know who will get you to the top and NOT what you know. Skills, experience and knowledge in certain areas are not taken into account but if you agree to be a "yes" person for management you will go far

Pros: Have had a decent experience working as a medical lab assistant and have been supported by a good team and management overall. Lots of stuff to learn starting off but you will familiarise yourself with time. Have gained decent exposure to the NHS and healthcare in general as well. In my experience, I have been surrounded by friendly staff as well. 
Gained some basic skills within the laboratory and also outside of the lab (data entry etc.). 

Cons: Hours can be inconsistent especially if you are in a bank role. Whilst bank offers flexibility, it may not be the most stable. Tasks might feel a bit repetitive for a while.  Overall experience is good, but unfortunately not a lot of room for career progression unless you progress through different roles/bands. 


Contracting out has ruined the NHS. Although stilled employed by the NHS, the service I worked for had to competitively tender for the work every 5yrs. Big players like Virgin Health won these contracts (on price) then dumped them back with the NHS after ? a few months because they weren't profitable. Then the NHS had to absorb the extra work of the failed service with no extra resourcing. Absolute nightmare. This happened so many times no matter where I worked in the NHS. Management don't care. I saw many hard working conscientious colleagues put on disciplinary  warnings because they refused to put patients at risk. 

I started out as a transcriptionist and eventually became a health records technician and gradually moved up to doing release of patient information to doctor's offices, other hospitals, legal cases, WSIB, the patiet's themselves. I found this to be a very interesting part of my job ,

Extremely pressurised but also very  rewarding however with so much expected from staff and all trying to juggle so much and feeling undervalued with high expectations and unrealistic targets to achieve goals we are left feeling depressed and sad at how things have become so difficult.

Great place to work, it’s a vocation not there for the money, always busy so time goes quickly. Manager is good, always willing to try and accommodate any work related issues 

Loved working in PERT (Psych Emergency Response Team) great colleagues/Doctors,nurses and all staff there .  Good environment, patient focused, good working with all units in psychiatry to expedite excellent service to patients.
