After a 30 plus year working career with 10 of the last years in Public Health, my application was repeatedly ignored. When I did get a job as a Pandemic Contact tracer I received the worst orientation and never was offered any hours of hands on work. Protocols were not logical with a poor chain of command. Best practice with respect to science based approach was not achieved. Asking questions were equated to challenging the way things were done. New grads with no experience had nothing to compare it to and were given hours of work. New grads also cost less per hour. Nursing positions operated in silos so that nurses offering to help with vaccination had to begin from scratch in applying to support this area of preventative health.

You get threatened with termination if you take 5 sick days in a year 

In my department I had to work an entire year without any vacation days 

The employer is the least flexible or compassionate in terms of accommodating work life balance or disability needs that I have ever worked for

There are 10 times the amount of overpaid managers than are needed in every department and they micro manage every single employee to the point the employee just leaves

Management here is like when I worked in a call center (the worst!)

When I first started the region was able to retain employees until retirement but now due to all the toxic oppressive inflexible management practices we lost more than 40% of our entire staff in 1 year and we are so understaffed and over worked still because of this loss in staff

If you want to be appreciated and treated like a human being that matters don't work here!  

The Niagara Region operates 8 long-term care homes, 5 daycares, 5 social assistance offices, homelessness services, Public Health, Emergency Medical Services, waste, water and wastewater services, transportation services, a planning department, economic development division, clerks division, and Corporate Services that work behind the scenes to support the operations in areas such as HR, finance, IT, Procurement, Corporate Strategy, Communications, Construction, Energy and Facilities Management, Business Licensing, Asset Management and Legal and Court Services. There are multiple bargaining unions as well as Non-union staff and most employees are eligible for health and dental benefits, competitive salary, OMERS pension, life insurance, short and long term disability coverage as well as other recognition programs. 

An example would be, set tables, pour drinks , portion deserts, take out garbage, wash kitchen and survery floors, serve dinner, wash pots and dishes, clean the dish area, turn equipment off  and make sure HS snack cart is out. Turn lights off and lock doors before leaving main kitchen. I have learned that if you work steady and communicate with your partner you can achieve your goal. Management does the best they can. When we work together as a team the whole process runs a lot smoother. Sometimes there are fire drills or assistance that is needed which take time away from your time sensitive tasks but I always get back on track.The most enjoyable part of the job is when I can get a smile from the family member or the resident and to know that they are happy with the treatment they are receiving.

Hardly any productivity at this place, they want people with degrees only for you to do deliveries 60% of the time. You hardly learn anything mostly just an errand runner for the senior staff. No job growth at all as it is a small team. If you try and apply to other departments that you qualify for, they would rather outsource for new staff than higher ambitious employees. Suggestions are taken well but never really implemented unless it costs them next to nothing. I do not think management really cares about morale, never asked on how Senior management is never there to mentor you properly, you are never given assignments that develop you for your career, wage is terrible, and no benefits. The reminder 10% of the time you are doing tedious data entry . the other 30% you are wondering what should be done. 

Working for Niagara Region was one of the best decisions I ever made. The waste management interns team is usually a very fun team to work with. You work with new graduates that are very eager and passionate about the environment. There is a lot of outreach in this position, so you will be interacting with residents and educating them about waste management at the Region. The job will open up doors for you in the future as it is a well known program. Management is very present and helpful and you will learn and build on various skills that you can take into your career. 

Have a smile on for every customer you see, interact with them, serving coffee, donuts, bagels and sandwiches. Learned to work as a group to get things done, learned to deal with unsatisfied people and how to fix their order immediately. Worked with a greta group of people, always nice and ready to help others. The hardest part of the job is to stand there while someone is complaining and yelling at you at how bad you did something while it was a team effort and only one person gets the blame for it. The most enjoyable part of the day is seeing all the regulars that come in. Knowing your name and having a smile at all times, makes you have a better day. Another enjoyable part is being there, the people I worked with were great and made coming to work fun and worth it.

A typical day in the home daycare for me was get up at 5:30AM, prepared nutritious food for the children, start ready for 7:00AM when  they start coming, prepared educational activities for them, or I tried to kept children busy depend on child special needs, prepared breakfast for them and help them feed,  help the children with potty training, changes diapers, took them outside to play or for walk, we come back for lunch time, assisted children with daily living personal care and clean the area. after that put them to sleep. give daily report to parents. I learned that children are very smart, they can learn fast and easy when you take quality time with them. for me the hardest part was not find balance, between job and family.

A typical day would be to assist  residents with dressing and grooming. Mealtime would be assit or even feeding them and help with ADL's which is Activited Daily Living. I was able to work great with my co-workers, we we team players. Was to leave and say good bye, and there were residents that thought they could look after they needs themself and it was hard to watch they struggle,but we were they for their evey needs. Once again I say, the smiles I receeived or the many thank yous, were like music to my heart.

Working at Niagara Regional Street Hockey Center, is a great community setting for family to come to. It has taught me various business skill, in which I learned how to run an entire sports complex. Business skills such as marketing aspects, purchase orders, team organization, the importance of safety and cleanliness and of course the day to day of finances. The most enjoyable part of this job, was being witness to the teams with children with low self esteem and confidence, bring their team to the final play-offs.
