NORTH SHORE WINTER CLUB

Firstly, I will say I absolutely loved my time as an employee at the North Shore Winter Club. This was only due to the coworkers around me with whom I built lasting friendships and the members who I also built lasting relationships with. In that regard I am grateful for my time at the club. I felt valued by the team I was in and the members we served on a daily basis.

I did not feel at all valued by any aspect of upper management, in fact I met majority of upper management either once or never at all in 18 months. Our department was never checked on and sparingly offered support, to which only came when one of our beloved coworkers passed away. There were no regular meetings, no attempt to notice the solid work that had been done for years, only ignorance.

The Club's management has a serious disconnect with what really matters in a member's club.

They do not care for the members and their families, only how many dollars they bring in. 

They do not care for diligent, hard-working employees, only that they show up, get their job done and don't bring up any of the countless underlying issues within the club. 

They do not care for empathy, understanding or respect, only control, power and prejudice.

An undervalued ex-employee

My biggest take away is the staff team.  My experience was that of working with a dedicated group. While no team is perfect and there were bumps in the road, the efforts to continue to improve were evident and presented themselves on a daily basis.  There are certainly challenges that are trying at times but overall I found a good level of support from my direct managers as well as from my coworkers.  Support to learn and grow was evident from day one and I was able to advance my career and life skills due to this support.  The facility certainly has some challenges in how it operates but in my experience the progress they have shown and the positive changes I witnessed are a great indicator of a work environment that will only continue to improve.  

The members are great and I had some awesome co-workers at the front-desk. Do not ever expect to get a raise, they do not give them here. Management is toxic, they're all friends outside of work so there's no accountability if you are treated poorly by one of them, which will most likely happen. When I first started working there we got free meals/could use the gym but those privileges were eventually taken away from us which made the minimum wage pay even worse. Overall, it's an okay job if you're wanting to gain experience in customer service and admin/office duties, but there is no room to grow unless you somehow befriend one of the unfriendly managers. 

The North Shore Winter Club is a solid place to work.  You're expected to work, and hard work is noticed and rewarded.  Managers are usually flexible about accommodating time off and schedules within reason, and generally pretty accommodating.  There's been a bit of turnover in staff, but it's a pretty young group there, and people move on for different reasons.  The team is pretty good in most departments,   and if you're committed, they'll help you advance through the company

What is the best part of working at the company?
The gm at the time was not a good manager and didn't strive to help develop her team. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Dealing with angry members without much support from colleagues. Hockey dept was particularly difficult to work with


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture wasn't great, but the work environment was decent 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Dealing with members, admin, responding to enquiries, etc.

All managers are either related or friends.
No managers on site after 4pm.
Regardless of your experience, managers know better.
Extremely high staff turnover.
If you speak up, human resources will bully you until you quit.
Mamagement will have drinks every afternoon, but if you get busy, don't count on their help.
Instead, they will sit and watch and take notes on everything that goes wrong and discipline you.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Low company morale and lack of support, there is not customer service. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of support and poor morale they have a meal program for employees that the cooks refuse to serve the employee. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poor morale and poor support to employees. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Boring nothing exiting, poor engagement from management.

This place gave me the opportunity to start as a Housekeeper and after two years I have achieved a Management position. It’s a place with a lot of history and that means challenges, learning about the pros and the cons, your patience will be tested but there’s people who cares about changing and improving the work environment for the members and the staff. Having the chance to embrace a positive change is a blessing. 

The Club is solid place to work, and there's lots of growth opportunities.  There are so many wonderful families and it's all about making great experiences for them.  Management is very supportive and do a good job of recognizing hard work.  There were definitely a few staff who have an unrealistic sense of entitlement in the past year or two, but most of them have moved on and it's really improved the culture, not having their negativity!

Working as a housekeeper at North Shore Winter Club has been a very positive experience. The work environment is excellent, with a collaborative team and a friendly atmosphere. Management is approachable and always ready to offer support. Additionally, they provide breakfast for employees, which is a nice touch to the workday. I feel valued and motivated, and I would definitely recommend this place as a great place to work.
