All housekeepers would start their shift with a quick meeting with one of the supervisors where we would be quizzed on work safety and notified of any important news. Supervisors were all extremely kind and eager to provide support and feedback for all workers. We would be assigned a certain area in the hospital to work for the day at the beginning of each shift. Levels of the hospital for admitted patients were usually cleaned alternating between one or two housekeepers every four hours. The environment on most floors were fast paced as one would expect for a hospital. The hardest part of the job was having to make due with limited housekeepers in certain areas such as the OR and surgical daycare where we were often understaffed. There was also sometimes an issue of not being provided with enough cleaning supplies. The most enjoyable parts of the job were having the experience of learning how a healthcare environment works, and being able to go into a patient's room and provide them with a clean environment with the intention of making their day a little bit better. As a pre-med student, working at NRGH was not only a privilege also was confirmation that medicine was the path for my education.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I was warmly accepted by both management and my colleagues, who treated me with kindness and respect.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
So far, nothing has been stressful.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The company has a healthy work environment with a respectful and inclusive culture. Employees are supportive, and management values professionalism and cooperation.

Working at NRGH has been a blast, mainly due to having amazing coworkers. The hospital facilities and snack options for patients leave a lot to be desired, as well as very limited space for the ever increasing number of inpatients. I can't speak for other managers, but mine rocks!! Staffing (and by this I mean the department) really needs an overhaul, as sometimes you could be underpaid for work already done.

I would look elsewhere, if there is a choice.  Unfortunately, the only acute care employer on Vancouver Island, and little hope for change.  Most recent survey by Doctors of BC have majority of staff feeling unsupported.

Our Chief Power Engineer is extremely knowledgeable in his craft. With his leadership and management skills he has made great changes withing the facility. It has been a pleasure working with everyone there.

Island Health, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is challenging and rewarding. Met some wonderful staff and patients. Working throughout the hospital as a casual provides an opportunity to become very diverse in providing different levels of care.

Due to the lack of Budget for hiring enough staff to properly run the facility, there is always lots to do which makes for the day going by quickly. Pay rate is on the bottom of the scale for power engineers.

Great place to learn as a student. Very knowledgeable nurses who take the time to help and teach you how to do things properly. I especially loved the palliative unit. Its a whole different level of nursing and the staff treated me very well.

Provide nursing care for patients on an inpatient acute psychiatric unit. Which includes medication administration, management of disturbed behaviour, maintenance of IV's, dressing changes, and catheterizations.

The hospital is a constantly busy, and never ending place. Everyday there is something new to see and learn. I have been working within the hospital for 10 years now and never have a dull moment
