Before you even begin thinking about working here please read this review. If I had to sum up NEE in one word, that’s easy – TOXIC. Be prepared that you will give up all your time for this company – it's expected of you. Don’t be fooled, an 8-hour day is not the norm, overtime is mandatory at any given moment during your day. I promise you will get a phone call from dispatch at 4:30pm demanding you take an extra service call (which is fine on occasion, but it’s basically an everyday occurrence), and if you decline, expect a phone call from your supervisor forcing you to work late without hesitation. Picking up parts in the morning? Expect to be questioned. Need to leave 30 minutes early for an appointment? Expect to be questioned. Talking to a co-worker in the shop at 8:05am? Expect to be questioned, "what are you doing here?". Your Service Supervisor (who is still in the union), manages both Port Coquitlam and Nanaimo. Technicians are dropping like flies because of this, even technicians that were at the company for 5+ years have transferred or left. If you need assistance on a service call, good luck contacting him because he never answers his phone. Then there are monthly safety meetings where technicians are often yelled at and ridiculed for paperwork issues, or problems they had on a service call. During a random truck inspection, technicians were forced to give up their van keys and sit/wait in the meeting room while supervisors ransacked their company vans. Some technicians’ belongings were left on the floor scattered with personal bags opened and dumped out and a few others mentioned items were ACTUALLY MISSING. Each technicians’ GPS were sealed and then brought in for a series of questions about van use. Some techs were brought in for further questioning because of prescription medications...yes this ACTUALLY happened. While doing service calls, a few technicians accidentally went over a “do not exceed” amount on parts/labour for a certain customer. These technicians were all brought into the manager’s office and written-up for an honest mistake. The write-ups occur frequently and while you’re being disciplined expect to be yelled at as well while two or more supervisors sit in the room while you’re sitting alone. Almost daily new drama surfaces and technicians are blamed for causing it, but the supervisors spread gossip among the technicians, this place is like high school all over again. Be prepared to get questioned on 1.) Why your service call took X number of minutes/hours. 2.) Why your timecard shows X number of minutes/hours (yes, they will remove time off your timecard – even 15 minutes and they take off 30 minutes for start/end of the day if you drive your company van home). The B.C. branch has 1 manager and 5 supervisors for the 10-15 technicians. They outside hire for their supervisors and it’s rare they promote within. If you’re looking for a career with mobility and the chance for promotion – this isn’t the place for you. Recently they started requesting to start early and work late to keep up with the demand of service calls, but this would not have happened if they fixed all the issues internally and reduced the 10+ technicians quitting in the last 1-2 years. When a technician needed to start early to get off a little early the answer was almost always “no”. There’s almost no give and take, always take…

I was there just about 3 months. Went in to work and did my job everyday. Worked hard without knowing any of the products, wasn’t  taught to well when I started, it was a learn yourself kind of experience. Products in shelf’s were easy but when it told you a dock number. The overflow of product is a disaster,. Hard to ask a question to someone. Was told in my interview that they were understanding if you had kids, well I had to leave 2 days in a row as my daycare called and couldn’t keep my son. So I had to go pick him up and keep him home. I booked a day off for my sons appointment a few weeks ago, Had to miss 2 days this week as my daughter got a fever of 106, I told them that and they acted like everything was fine and they understood. So today, doing my job, running an order through the system and get asked if I have a second, I was let go saying I don’t fit in and that I missed too many days. I had days approved for missing. They used that against me knowing that my kids were sick. I heard from others they do this just about 3 months. A guy there missed 3 weeks being sick I was told. Anyone else would be let go, he wasn’t cause his family works there. A lot of favouritism goes on there cause they’re family. 

Overall, its not the worst place to work to be honest. Most days are fairly easy, other not so much. You come to work, do a few service calls, and then go home. Other days, you are forced to work overtime with basically no option. If you like a 9-5 type job, DONT WORK HERE.

Management used to be (and still is) absolutely terrible... You were written up if you - went over budget on a job, were missing one piece of safety equipment/ppe (one guy ACTUALLY go written up for walking to the bathroom without his PPE on), your timecards did not match exactly what your gps said (to the minute), if you called in sick (lol yup) - I could go on and on about the write ups here...Techs are made false promises on training, advancement, and preferred work. 

Theres been a lot of turnover and I expect more. If you work here for 10+ years good luck working somewhere else cause this trade is all you know... most of the older guys are stuck at the company and hate it.

Now, management is trying to care which i kinda respect but only after like 10+ techs quit in one year...

A bit too late NEE

At times it was a great place to work with great people, but there is a real lack of structure with regard to management. It is a typical story of a small business that expanded and kept a lot of the old and out-dated policies and procedures in place. Also, while there is no ambiguity as to what your job entails, there is inconsistency with what is expected of you day to day. The only real consistent expectation is do what the manager says and don't question anything.

If you are the type that wants the same routine every day, and no real room for advancement in your career (both position and financially), then National Energy is for you. It is comfortable and set in its way. 

However, if you values your ideas, want room for advancement, and don't want to live an emotional roller-coaster with your boss every day, then it is not the company for you.

Long hours and management has no qualms about asking for 16+ hour days. It's a tough job done in all weather conditions, and often equipment is not up to par. 

Techs are sent out into dangerous conditions alone for days, and there is very little work-life balance. Schedule your life for the weekends (if you're not on call, or covering the on call shifts for someone else who just quit)

Frequent turnover means understaffing and technicians suffer for it. 
Tons of training and learning opportunities, but there doesn't seem to be any advancement opportunities aside from regional management, and there are already too many managers. 

Really do not recommend working here.

This company is a National company.  They are -- in general -- good people to work with.  Unfortunately I was a person they must have higher expectations for as far as my work experience was concerned.  Management and my co-workers seemed to think I should have been a "wizard" with the MRP program they had in place.  I was given 6 hours of training and I was to be an expert after that training.  Not really given a fair chance but listening to how they spoke to clients on the phone, walked in the door, or even to each other was very disrespectful.  The profanities were awful.  We are taught in the workplace to be respectful of each other and our clients.  It was shameful and embarrassing.

You are going to work as an apprentice electrician and not a technician. Bad management. Hiding their things. There are only 5 to 6 people managing and involving in technical works, and rest of all are going to be used as labor. They want people to stay for longer years to get involved in the technical works even though you have a skill-set. Hiding lots of things. One person is mainly taking all the decisions (OLD SCHOOL). Using and lying with the people. Not giving opportunities to the new people as they want you to get your hand dirty before you start working with the technician ( I am not sure that they will give you the right opportunities after you do your hand dirty as I moved on when I figured it out).

If you are looking for a position in the HVAC division of this company, dont't waste anytime here if you are looking long term carteer position.

This is a company who's priority is the development and expansiopn of their premier business, petroleum industry. therefore key management and the managers currently in place that manage the HVAC side, are very dedicated to the petroleum business and have zero experience in the HVAC industrym so it is a very very frustrating company to be employed by if you are looking to advance your career in the HVAC wholesale industry.

I've worked at NEE for over 25 years, that in itself should speak volumes about the organization.  The company is large enough to provide excellent medical & dental (entirely company sponsored), but yet small enough to have a personal "feel".  For example the president knows every employee & can call them by their name.  Additionally NEE has a RRSP program, attractive bonus structure, six paid sick / personal days per year, plus tool & boot allowance.  Being a coast-to-coast National company, there is not only room for upward mobility, but also opportunities to relocate between branches.  I am proud to work for NEE & anticipate staying here until I retire.
