Needs Convenience

A typical shift does not include any formal breaks.  Over night its not so bad but on a busy friday you'll be lucky if you get a single washroom break never mind an actual rest period over an entire eight hour shift.  

What did I learn?  I cant say I learned a thing outside of customer interaction skills.

The management seemed nice but was caught stealing from their employees.  The labour board  got involved and nothing was solved as far as I know.  Other than that they were not available at all by phone so if somebody doesnt show up for their shift you're just expected to deal with it on your own or work a 16 hour shift because nobody came to replace you.  

Co-workers varied... Some not so bad, others extremely toxic to be around.  One would yell at customers and was openly stealing and was never disciplined.  Two others were alcoholics and would show up to work drunk on occasion.

Hardest part would be dealing with sketchy, often intimidating customers at night.  Up to and including facing robbery.  You are alone in the store all night and the security system was quite poor.

Most enjoyable part would be those quiet sunday 5am mornings when its just before the crack of dawn and its perfectly quiet out.  You also meet some interesting people.

Honestly was the best place I ever worked because the owner was amazing, I loved the staff and I loved the customers but the company itself sucks. My franchisee was highly praised by the company until they decided to fire him for literally no reason and all his great employees started quitting because the store quickly started going down hill without him. I've hired people who had worked at other needs stores previously and they all said they hated their past bosses and that this particular store was the best one they worked for until the new franchisee came in. The new management doesn't seem to care much for store cleanliness standards or hiring people who really care about the customers experience. Its hard to really get raises working here but considering how low they pay their franchisees, thats not surprising considering staff are paid out from the franchisee and the more they pay out the less they make. As a manager I was literally sometimes taking home more than my franchisee and he worked his butt off. Don't expect benefit packages either because franchisees don't even get them.

I've grown with the community, everyday people would stop in and get their daily chats, we dealt with 4 senior homes, 3 universities, and a large base community in the south end of Halifax. 
I would deal with every race on earth as this area was the hub of Halifax for students and travelers from around the world.
I've learned personal relations, I can deal with people in a stress situation without escalating, with the best interest of the company.
I would deal with product/quality control. I've implemented work schedules, task charts, inventory control reports, quality control reports.
Work place was a fast paced environment, this location was the busiest for Halifax as it was a 24hr store located Downtown Halifax.
The hardest part would be working with students, the work ethics was not there tasks didn't get done, nor would some show up for shifts, I was the one called in to fix or cover shifts.
I've brought our location to be #1 for Atlantic Canada, and I have been the discussion of conferences for the better of the company.
Working everyday was great, seeing the community, growing with the community, most times work felt like hanging out with friends.

Co-workers are okay. You always work alone for nine hours, no breaks, It's very busy. Management is very poor, and its an 'Immature' work place, there is drama created easily. You get 'Taught' how to do things, but 95% of it you'll learn when you're on your own, I was taught poorly and had to figure it out on my own as I went. If you call in sick, no one will cover and that leaves the manager to do it, which is a hassle because they're really busy and due to shortage of staff (Only having four not including the manager) no one will cover a shift, but expects you to do the favor for them. Hardest part is working alone you can't get a lot of things that NEED to be done finished, if you have to go to the bathroom you'll have to hold it in no matter whatever it is because you can't kick people out and no one else is there to cover cash, you stand for nine hours with no breaks. The best part of the job though is the night time costumers. They're much more happier than the people during the day (Was what I was told) and they just have a positive vibe, they're super awesome. The job would be perfect if there was someone else working  and different management.

One of my favorite places to work. I was always treated with respect and never had any issues communicating with my employer or other staff about literally anything. The job is your typical convenience store with a gas station. You man the till and when it gets slow you stock merchandise or you count stock. I was paid minimum wage rightly so, however had I stayed I know my boss wouldn't have hesitated in giving me a raise. The job was easy, the hours were good and I got to meet a lot of interesting people... some a little less friendly than others but that comes with the job lol. I was able to work a full time job while I worked weekends here and hopefully that says a lot about the store itself and the job that comes with it.

NEED IS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK,EACH DAY IS DIFFERENT,THE PEOPLE AND CO-WORKRES ARE GREAT THE MANAGEMENT IS GREAT TOO YOU CAN GO TO THEM AND TALK ABOUT ANY PROBLEM THAT U MAY HAVE ,AND THEY WILL DO THERE BEST TO FIX IT OR COME UP WITH A SUITABLE ANSWER THAT BEST SUITS EVERYONE.THE THING THAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS JOB WAS DOING BACK SHIFT ON FRIDAY MORNINGS ,THAT IS WHEN THE ORDER CAME IN AND WE SEEMED TO BE THE BUSIEST AND IT WAS HARD TO WAIT ON CUSTOMERS AND PUT AWAY THE ORDER .THEY DIDN'T CARE IF U DIDN'T HAVE THE ORDER PUT AWAY ,BECAUSE THE MORNING STAFF WOULD FINISH IT ,BUT I SOMETIMES SYAYED TO FINISH IT.ALL IN ALL I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT IT WAS A REALLY GOOD PLACE TO WORK ,THE STAFF IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE WORK WITH,

I worked there part-time from late winter until late summer of 2014, and in the summer, I had more hours due to how busy it was, but the manager was always making sure the part-timers never worked too much. The manager who was there at the time, though, would sometimes make scheduling mistakes; I was never able to work by myself for very long or during busy hours, but the manager put me bymyself for 4 hours one day without realizing that it was prom night for the high school a walking distance away. This particular Needs was also a liquor store, so it was extremely busy and had to call a co-worker for assistance.

I enjoyed this job. The staff was awesome, and MOST of the customers were nice. The lotto machines got on my nerves, I sometimes felt there should be two people working the store on busy lotto nights, there would be a lineup of 10 people and then people hovering in the aisles stealing things, and I was too distracted to catch them all the time. It would have been nice if there was another person there to take over cash while I dealt with theives, especially on the busier nights where you don't want to leave 15 customers waiting in a line up to deal with some kid taking a chocolate bar.

Needs was the Perfect job for me at the time. They help work around my schedule without any issues, I enjoyed my co workers because they were all friendly, helpful and reliable. The job its self was good too. Most days I would come in and do my usual duties like maintain the stores appearance, stocking product and keeping track of sales etc. The job help me brush up on my customer service and organizational skills and it was just an all around positive experience there.

Day to day activities consist of what you would expect - stocking shelves as needed, assisting customers with making various purchases from lottery and tobacco to snack foods, basic cleaning, and small talk with customers.
