Neighborhood Bridges

I worked for NB for about 5 years in various positions. The workplace culture is community-oriented. I joined in the beginning stages, and there were some things that needed to be changed that were changed as time went on. Working here changed my life for the better, I made lifelong friends, and it provided me with the awareness that my unique gifts and abilities were valued somewhere. The hardest part of this job was learning self-care and reaching out for community care when needed. It can be, depending on who you are an emotionally draining position to hold. As any position where you are working with and for people is. Make sure to check in with yourself, and provide yourself with the care necessary to provide the quality of care that the people you support deserve. The structure of the company does provide you with the ability to reach out for support from the community as well, so if you are struggling, say so. I will never forget my time here, and am grateful for the time I spent here. 

Working for Neighborhood Bridges was amazing, after being gone almost 10 years later they are still my favorite place I've worked. I only left because I moved out of Edmonton and it was too far to drive. They make work very fun, are very understanding about your personal life when things come up that are out of your control and will work with you if you experience  burnout (an inevitable  thing in this industry) to make sure you get back on track and are healthy  before returning to work. Best bosses I've ever had the pleasure of working  for. 

The staff and community is wonderful. However things are poorly run, and many things seem to slip by upper management that put staff into really bad situations. Many of the supervisors never even answer their phones in emergency situations. Upper management also seems to play favorites with employees, letting some get away with honestly really questionable choices. Getting hours can be very difficult as well, unless you're there for a long time. Unless promoted, you will never get a raise.

The people who nb supports are great and fellow employees equally wonderful. Issues lie within grey area ethics & directors with questionable motives that leads to toxic work environment and poor work/life balance.
Unbalanced office to in person work in LD position and roles constantly changing but pay not reflecting extra responsibilities. 
HRW's over worked and underpaid. Can be hard for them to find a balance in hours to support themselves.
The saving grace of this place are the people they serve and the HRWS & LD's who hold it together. 

I had the privilege to work for them when they were fairly new. They were a Human Rights Agency who actually cared about the individuals purchasing supports from their company and were also very fair and understanding to their employees. I learned a great deal about being human from Neighborhood Bridges and wish them continued success.

Neighbourhood bridges offers a unique philosophy of care that is different than other, more traditional care models. 

Working here gave me great experience that I am able to use in my current mental health roles.

The work is primarily done solo, so loneliness can become an issue. I felt very supported by my supervisors but heard that is not always the case for some teams. 

Neighborhood bridges is a highly welcoming community. There are a lot of skills to learn from everyone within the community, skills such as time management, critical thinking, team management and social skills. Even though the job was emotionally and physically demanding at times, the managers/supervisors were all really helpful and made sure everyone felt safe and secure in the workplace.

Policies are hardly applied nor are they clearly established, drama left and right within the work force and team members, enabled poor behaviour within clients and hardly executed any effective measures and life skills for a specific client. A poor choice for a particular client to be with, and a horrible place to work due to employers being left in the dark. 

Advocacy only exists for who you support. There is no balance or respect. They will burn you out. High turnaround. Only long timers get the benefits and respect. 
You get an understanding of support for vulnerable people, and you can make some great friends, but you won't build a career. 

Neighborhood Bridges is an amazing organization that does great work with developmentally disabled adults. Lots of training is offered through the organization, the culture is great, and management is excellent. It is truly a great workplace related to the social work field.
