Neighbourly Pharmacy

Pros: 
Lots of pharmacies under the nbly banner. As a result there are lots of relief opportunities for anyone looking to make a lot of money.
Rrsp matching is better than industry standard. However I am told that this may have changed.
Not metric based (they do look at them but there is no pressure to perform x amount of med reviews, this does depend on your manager as well).
Lots of great co workers.

Cons:
No clear vision, seems like corporate says one thing and does another.
Low wages, try to secure the highest wage possible when given the opportunity, as raises are almost non existent once you start working for them. Pay is lower than Indstry standard. 
Lack of support: due to low pay assistants in many stores are often students who work as summer time employees or short term employees, as a result staff are not adequately trained .
High turnover (see above)
Relief pharmacists within the company are treated better than staff, these are people employed by nbly not external relief or independent contractors (often able to negotiate higher rates etc). They will happily pay relief 60 vs raising staff wages by an extra dollar or two. 
When negotiating many opportunities are promised/offered, n reality they rarely follow through as no one in upper management communicates with one another.
Poor accounting, unless you're at one location there are usually errors with pay and bonus payments.
Expect to be paid late when doing relief for the company accounts payable is horrible when it comes to returning payment for expenses. You will most likely get your payment on the next credit card bill. Expect to pay expenses out of pocket for a credit card statement. 
HR is highly disorganized, never able to get through to them via telephone and email. 
Employees are generally unsupported (hence why there are lots of relief opportunities) many pharmacists often quit nbly owned pharmacies once bought over. Poor staffing and poor support are often the reason. 

If you have a supportive team at the location itself, however, the job is fine. You can have a good time if the team is supportive and friendly, and hopefully they’ll be willing to show you the ropes if you’re new. It does stand to be noted that a distinction needs to be made between the pharmacy itself and  the Neighbourly corporation. The former can be good. The latter has not had the same track record. 

Minimum wage is doing all the heavy lifting in Neighbourly’s salary distribution. God forbid they even breathe on the idea of giving a raise. Hardly a single pharmacy assistant position listed anywhere pays this low. There are also no benefits to speak of aside from a store discount. 

Upper management is disorganized and distant. They took an entire month and a half to give me my first pay check. The only contact I received from them prior to that was a wordless email with a contract attached and no confirmation until three weeks after. 

There is actually no upside to working for this corporation, aside from the fact that working in a pharmacy itself is a good learning experience. However, you could do that at any other pharmacy that isn’t under Neighbourly instead. 


The vision of the founders of this company is what makes this company such a great place to work for. The culture allows great freedom to take care of Canadians in the best way possible. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is actually helping people. ie. Be it giving a flu shot, reviewing a patient’s hospital discharge, ensuring patients are familiar with their medications, intervening on a patient’s behalf for drug interactions.

The management team is professional, responsive, supportive and willing to adapt to requests from store level. They are willing to work with you to get the job done. When you run into a problem and need an answer quickly, they deliver.

The hardest part of the job is multi-tasking and the lack of technician help. So you get to do many other functions. I have learned so much in taking care of the business part of pharmacy.

Overall, I would highly recommend this company as a good place to work.  I am excited to see how this corporation will grow and evolve in the future. This is exciting for pharmacy practice in Canada.

I had the best experience at this company. From management to the very least. I came in nervous not knowing if I would like it or not following some of my previous experiences being that I have quite a good number of kids with a very busy spouse. They were warm, welcoming and really supportive. They ensured I felt safe and designed a flexible schedule that worked really well for me making me able to achieve my work life goals. 

I was approached for a pharmacy manager position after 1 year showing this is the place to be if you need to grow career wise.

I had intended to do a residency in hospital pharmacy but due to the experience I had at the company, I changed my residency to community practice which involves training in pharmacy outpatient consulting, retail practice, management and leadership hoping to grow more in the area of community based pharmacy practice.

I hope to come back and rejoin the company.

Working here has been an amazing experience.   Being one of the fastest growing CANADIAN companies is it amazing to be part of the journey.  The management is approachable/ reactive and care about their employees.  The culture is amazing and everyone is willing to help and no one ever says that's not my job.  It is truly a great experience to be partners in our communities as well.   

I would highly recommend if you get a chance to work here that you do.    It will be an amazing experience and a gives you the opportunity to grow and advance your career.   There have been a number of internal promotions in this company and it has doubled in size in a year.   If your are thinking about working here don't think twice.   People First is always the name of the game here.

Putting up with a grumpy boss.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It is interesting.  I'm the oldest person there.  We don't really have a "culture".  There are 4 of us who are there most of the time and 1 other person who shows up 1 day a week. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day could include anything from filling prescriptions, serving customers. unpacking orders to vacuuming and/or washing the floor or lunch dishes.  It all depends on how busy the day is and what day of the week it is.

Excellent team work at work place makes the work shift most enjoyable. My philosophy is ' Love your job to make it enjoyable'. When you think only of the negatives with your firm or work place will make your job hectic and long. There are solutions to each and every task comes in friend of you.

Management question to the employees should be ' What should we do for you to achieve your goal ? '

in a less stress environment the work outcome will be at its maximum.So support your subordinates in their work.

I dislike someone go out of your store without the stuff or service they are looking for.

The most enjoyable moments in a pharmacist's job is when your customers/patients find relief in talking to you or take advice from you.

Small town pharmacy practice is the absolute best. Collaborative, rewarding practice with all other healthcare providers. I spent the majority of my career practicing in larger centres. I would highly recommend new pharmacy graduates or established pharmacists to do small town pharmacy. Neighbourly Pharmacy checks all the boxes off for me! Absolutely the best pharmacy culture you can find! Don’t waste your career with big box pharmacy like I did! So happy to be with an innovative, caring, supportive company. 

One word this company belongs to Higher management and not to workers. Management gets high bonussed and benefits and relax on tours and trips all paid by company. Whereas, workers work for extended hours with low paid salaries and benefits almost to none. Lot of work for staff like never ending. Keep complaining about different issues but no resolution. No training of anything try learning by yourself. Team members are cooperative and help.

It’s a pretty new company but the office environment is very good.  Lots of collaboration.  The new CEO has a weekly “huddle” which is great.  People really enjoying hearing about everything going on.  I always feel in the loop about other things happening that impact me.   It’s a growing company so everyone works hard, but the culture is really good.  

It felt a little chaotic when I first joined but the new leaders have made a lot of change for the better.  The growth feels more manageable.  I like my team, lots of really smart and hard working people.
