As this is a deadline driven, competitive industry, creating and following schedules and budgets was key to the successful completion of any given project. Maintaining open communication between team members, keeping an eye on milestones, and working cooperatively to achieve specific goals was essential in order to be successful in this fast paced yet exciting field. Many members of the team were hired on a contract basis and worked both in and outside of the office environment so it was critical that everyone be kept apprised of the status of the project and aware of whether they were on target to meet their piece. 

I learned that the nature of business often hinges on a domino affect. If one individual does not meet their deadline, then it impacts the next phase of production, and the next, and so on, so it is important to be vocal if you believe you may need assistant in order to meet your deadline. I also learned that even though the business could be highly stressful and you may end up working with and/or for very demanding people, it is important to 'read' those individuals and identify what it is they need in order to make the team work smoothly. Some people need to be nurtured. Others are easy going yet dedicated to their role, and enjoy watching the project come together so you acknowledge their approach as well. It is important to pay attention to these factors when managing both people and a project. Productivity increases and the processes can actually be exciting when individuals are made to feel valued. 

The most enjoyable part of my job was two-fold. One - working with some amazingly bright and energetic people who know how to laugh even when things get tough because we all know that as a team, we will make it happen; and two - seeing the 'final product'. All the time, effort, energy finally comes together. There's nothing like it.

At first I was extremely excited to work at this company because HR sold me on the concept of how much growth I could have boy was I wrong to discover this could not be more further than the truth. 
Employed at Nelson I dealt with:
-Incompetent management who don’t show up for work write emails pretending to be on sales trips excluding their own upper management so they wouldn’t have to let HR know and deduct vacation days. 
-HR does not know what is going on because there is an invisible group of people that make brash decisions ex extreme amounts of layoffs and making it look like they terminated you personally but really they fired like 15 people at once just so they don’t get caught. 
- My first month working here more than 8 people were terminated. 
-Most of the jobs on indeed are contract positions. They do this so they don’t have to pay you more / give you vacation or sick days or even benefits. 
-Literally if you are under 30 and have dreams do not work here because they will die. 
The office is grey tone / no one is friendly.

I really loved working at Nelson Education; the people were fantastic to work with and the ambience was very friendly and welcoming--there were many employee benefits, fundraisers, and get-togethers during a typical month. The work I did covered many different aspects of publishing, from the ground up, and I was thoroughly engaged and interesetd the entire time I was there; it was fascinating to learn. I would recommend working at Nelson for anyone, but especially for younger people just starting in the publishing business--you absorb a lot.

The ability of the company to navigate these circumstances is hindered with the covid outbreak. Many activities occurring simultaneously, and in facilities the important factor is information, Important that transparency is managed effectively with the groups that need to know in advance of occurrences.

Productive and engaging work environment with a staff cafeteria.
Organizing a Team environment for projects was challenging as there are many attitudes and work ethics to keep in mind.  Management was very supportive and engaging, ensuring that access was available for subject matter expertise.

Hard work must be fun and exciting. We always try to create the excitement in any work place, establish good rapport with Team members, be proactive and exhibit the ability to handle any job that comes along.  Nelson Education is Canada's premiere book publishing company . I left because I migrated to the US after 2 promotions, 13 years later.

This is a good company to work for . I was promoted to 2 other higher position and learned a lot about the business in these two positions.

Nelson Education was a great place to work. My coworkers were really nice and we worked well together. I made some great new friends working there. I did a variety of tasks while working there and I learned a lot. The management was nice but also very managerial.

A lot of great people working there but also lots of turnover and confusion around projects. I can't really say, work there, you'll love it but if you need a job it's not a terrible place to work. You have to be really firm about your work/life boundaries because you'll get handed 80 hours of work and people will act VERY surprised that if you say it's too much. 

Imagine writing fake reviews to make it look like your company is great? This is what HR does on their spare time. 

Worst employment I have ever worked for glad I found something else under my 3 month term.  

This is a corporate company with a great vision but literally no implementation besides publishing is a dying industry.
