Nootka Marine Adventures

My partner and I moved to the Island to start a new life and step down a little, dedicating more time to our wellbeing. We are super outdoorsy people and choosing Courtenay was our ideal location, offering access to everything we need: mountains, ski slopes, backcountry, nordic, mountain biking, river and sea fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, climbing, exploring... this is endless. We still have access to services in town, like schools, yoga studios :) and hospital but we can also have access to incredible wilderness and be so remote in less than a 2/3hour drive... which is what attracted us here. Working for NMA offered us the possibility to be in Moutcha Bay and go fishing in Nootka Sound. We are mountain people and we discovered the ocean :) We had an incredible summer we will remember forever. I was challenged and did see issues in my position, but who does not in general? I communicated and was always heard. I am not rich either that's for sure, but if I wanted a lot of money, I would have stayed in a big city with my business school's master degree, living my old corporate life. We just made a choice. I did witness people evolving and being promoted in less than a year! What I know is that a lot of things are happening, new developments are coming and this is not an easy transition in general but hopefully this is for the best! If you are motivated and find solutions to your issues, or help others with their issues, you'll be just fine! I love this company and the people in it. Depending on your position, this is pretty fast paced in peak season. It can be stressful sometimes and it can be frustrating too, it can be awesome some other times and so satisfying too.  

3 years ago this was a great place to work however multiple long term employees quit over the past 1.5 years due to company management rapidly worsening. Employees are underpaid for the amount of extra tasks/responsibilities they are told to do and the work environment is very toxic and not healthy. Managers often turn away when there are problems and create their own cliques. Very bad communication within the company and very badly managed. Only good part is the health benefits because they help release the stress that you gain at this company.

Taking a risk and moving across the country for a job can be unnerving, however, the team at Nootka Marine Adventures turned what was perceived as a risk as one of the best decisions I've made.

There is a strong focus on growth within the company and it's the perfect time to join a team that is committed to the process. 

beautiful place to work and live. awful management that proves toxic after time. CEO is a tyrant that all the lower managers seem scared of, and end up taking their managerial frustrations on the seasonal workers who are just trying to do the job that no one even trained them on. 

The wage and atmosphere is great for a first job but not for anyone who understands what a toxic environment looks like. Worked there for many years and the pay was less than one would make in the fast food industry with a similar work environment. Management lacks experience and doesn't care about their staff which is hard to watch

I cannot Recommend this company enough! If you are lucky to work a summer there it'll feel like you're at a summer camp for adults! The management is amazing the people that work there are great and most importantly they really appreciate you as an employee and make sure that you have worklife balance

This company is terrible to work for. The employee turnover is shocking. Mental health and morale are so low. 
Upper  Management has no experience in the fishing industry and puts making money before people. This company is going through some rough times! Do not work here. Go find a fun job and enjoy life! 

There is never a dull moment working at NMA!  It's a complex business with so much potential for growth.  We all work hard but have lots of fun too.  I learn something new every day and really like the people I work with.  Best part of the job is enjoying the beauty of Nootka Sound!  

Fun place to work, got to enjoy the resort on the west coast during one of their salmon fishing derbies. Hardest part of the job is coordinating with on site staff and some very pushy customers who’ve been going for years so they expect a lot.

Cliques, general manager loved juvenile drama, long work days. Great staff meals.
Interdepartmental issues were constant, old staff returned even though they had known issues
