Like most companies that work in the oil sands they have slowed down in the last few years . The reason for my low rating is because  
1) job work balance is very poor. If  it's busy your schedule is 12 on and 2 off . That's right after 120 hrs or as much as 144 hrs  you are awarded with 48 hours off,  you can also get the 6 on 1off schedule, which in my opinion is worse  .  The best shift for a life outside of work is the  4 on 3 off schedule .  Somewhat better but if you do not live there it is allot of traveling on a very dangerous highway  or  a   very expensive flight. The reality is you will spend more money on room / board and travel then you make  .I think most people would starve on the best shift  so it's not worth it. There is also different rules for certain employees. Some are allowed to miss days ,some are allowed extended days off, others are laid off for being a few minuets late . the one rule that is universal for all is  " the squeaky wheel does not get any grease , it will get replaced by a wheel that does not squeak."
2) Salary and benefits , It is a union signatory contractor so the wages and benefits are okay . If you are what they call "craft labour" a membership in a union is required .  They  charge monthly dues and have more members then work so be prepared to give allot of money for nothing, or move to Fort McMurray . I've been with this union for decades  we are in a perpetual state of turmoil . In my opinion the money is no  better than other industrial companies  in the area union or non-union the biggest difference is you have a better chance of advancement and longevity with the non-union .  
3) Unless you have been employed for a long time or have a Fort McMurray address there is no job security and very slim possibilities for advancement with this company.  There is  better opportunities elsewhere in the area .  
4) The management is okay, however there are very condescending bullies that thrive here. Several incidents of bulling,harassment and  abuse both physical and verbal have been witnessed by me . I'm certain this happens in almost every department even though I have no proof. 
 Even the brightest,  hardworking, most experienced  people are treated poorly. 
5) the culture is very poor as well. As a trades person you require three things to complete your task efficiency 
1)information (prints,specs, installation procedures )
2)tools that are in good working order
 3) materials that are available 
 This was surprisingly difficult .

Company manager seems to really care about safety and nice people but safety is really lacking at the core. Dont raise any concerns at safety meetings thats for sure. They hire alot of  pretty girls and give them promotions. They lack tools and material, I seemed to be always looking for tools and material or trying borrow tools and make things work with the materials on hand. I spent alot of time walking long distances carrying personal tools and safety equipment The foremen are young, inexperienced and trying to make a name for themselves.

Norcan is a electrical union company responsible for the maintenance of syncrude's refinery located at the tar sands of Alberta.  The work environment at that time, when I was working for them, inside syncrude's refinery.  My time with them was short because of job cutbacks.  All I can say about them is they paid on time and followed proper safety procedures.

Morning/monthly safety meetings, incident investigation and reporting, data input, and site/equipment inspections are an example of the duties I would perform on a typical day. Senior Health and Safety Management's great team work skills, approachability and eagerness to educate made my time here a very enjoyable workplace .

Great company to work for. It has been 4 years now for me in this company. I have moved around in all different departments of syncrude assisting in day to day maintenance of the plants. Norcan has given me that opportunity which has widen my experience in different fields of instrumentation.

Norcan is a fantastic company but our project had ended. So I now have to find a new job and opportunity, I was getting sick of Fort McMurray so I took a Layoff and now want to find work somewhere else or have a camp position.(Live elsewhere).

Great pay great people great work allowed to work with minimal supervision if capable. Management is knowledgeable and professional. A lot of room for growth and learning

Worked with Norcan Electric at Fort Mcmurray on Syncrude site for 5 years and some days on top. Really love it. Work, experience, knowledge and fun was there. No doubt,

Professional , safety oriented, accomadating to Syncrude's constantly changing work plan. Norcan is one of the only companies in the industry that does not have direct deposit as part of their payroll.

We worked at a very large oil sands company in Fort McMurray. 
We provided plant maintenance and facilitated plant shutdowns. The job was great and there were many growth opportunities.
