Worked with this company for 5+ years and have been disappointed with how soul crushing the company has become since SNDL took over.

A mass layoff of hard working legacy employees, cutting hours, pressuring store managers to pick up the slack left behind from the mass layoff, and constant pushing of their "market share" products just to appease shareholders has taken away motivation to care about the work and causes resentment towards those in charge. Management has made false promises to people for promotions and drags their heels when they actually do promote someone.

There are no incentives for employees to do better, and every time they try to implement something they roll it back after trying it once because it eats into their profits. Employees used to get sampling opportunities to help them sell the products better but they stopped doing it, so the only positive is the discount and even that has a cap on how much you can spend with it. There is no proper training for new hires and is often a steep learning curve if you aren't experienced.

Staff are over worked and underpaid. Management has absolute no control over its workers and gives a I don’t care attitude. Also is lazy, unqualified and unwilling. There is no communication between management and team members what so ever. There is too much gossip about customers and coworkers going around, making it a extremely unprofessional place to be. There is no sort of training, they will just throw you on the floor and expect you to know what you are doing. If you value your time and mental health, do not work here! It is a huge corporation that does not value its employees; your time and work are of no importance to them. $16.50 to be a key holder is not worth it! $15.50 to be a CER is also not worth the headache of miserable, demanding and rude customers/coworkers. There is little to no opportunity to move up in the company and they will sabotage you if you try to look for other opportunities. Manager, supervisor and key holders seem to have some sort of stuck up attitude and power trip.

Worked there over covid by myself, opened and closed the store I was the only one who worked there, upper management couldn’t care less about safety, never once was offered a raise or manger positions. Nepotism, bad hiring practice, and no thought for your employee makes a bad working environment. I feel bad for whoever works at spruce grove. I had to get therapy because of this job/my old manager. My grandparents passed away within a week of each other during the holiday season they wouldn’t let me take any time off because it was “busy” and when I got too stressed from no vacation (I had 4 days off in all of December that’s including my Christmas Day off and my “weekends”)  they let me go, And I’m not writing this because I’m angry, I’m warning anyone do not work here. It will drain your life away no matter how much they say they will promote you, they never will unless you are their friend or family. If your looking for a fun cannabis store experience try any other dispensary unless you’re looking for a quick buck on a weekend job you don’t care about. 

This is not a place to work if you value your mental health or your personal well being. You constantly have to deal with customers being rude/aggressive to you with no support from your coworkers or your manager. All of the managers I had were underpaid and engaged in various unprofessional acts such as gossip and showing up to work under the influence. The company only cares about sales and appearances and will not do anything to back up their employees or look out for them. You are expected to be able to work at other Nova/Value Buds stores in the surrounding area at a moments notice. There is an incredibly high turnover at Nova/Value Buds for these reasons. It is an incredibly toxic workplace environment that is poorly run and incredibly stressful and exhausting in an industry that is seen as “chill” and “easy going”. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
the job feels very team driven and focused.  You strive to meet goals and overall succeed as a team as there is a strong sense of community.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
the sheer volume of individual customers because of the outstanding prices can cause stress if you are not able to manage stress well. However if you like fast paced I would 100% reccomend!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Come in perform openings at the job ready to store for success as their is quite a few cannabis enjoyers who partake during the day.

Fast-paced working environment. Large sweeping changes implimented without practical plans in place for transition period.  Large disparity in communication from upper management to middle, then middle to us. During major meetings, the middle managers looked just as blindsided by decisions as we did, and did their best to help us out after decisions were made (I don't fault them much), but it felt like we were set up to fail. Also suggested to get a second job after raise was declined. 

If I could give this company ZERO stars I would. Lowest paying cannabis job in Canada. No room to grow in the company. Managers and Supervisors are the only people who get full time hours or even BENEFITS for that matter and it takes years. If you can’t give this company every day/minute of your availability, you will never grow. I noticed they are also going by Nova Cannabis because Value Buds has such a terrible reputation for treating there employees like garbage. No communication between store level staff and higher ups. The company only cares about pushing garbage product that they “think” is good. 

Started putting their job ads through “nova cannabis” rather than “value buds”. I’m guessing it has something to due with the overwhelming reviews attached to that link. Took them with a grain of salt when I started but they all turned out to be true and more. Regretted putting any time into this company. Incredibly disappointing how upper management treats people. Be prepared to be exposed to a very toxic environment. Non existent leadership, tons of inappropriate communication and contact- expect to be spammed on days off and reprimanded if you don’t answer immediately. Incredible turnover. 

Initial year was all promises of promotion, movement and success, they claimed they recognize hard workers. They dont care about the numbers you make, just as long as the numbers are being made. You are a number there and for the better half of 2 years i gained nothing there. No raises. No movement, higher turnover. I recieved a pin that was bent out of shape. At the end, no promises were kept. At least i got 2 years of industry experience out of it & a good reputation. Highschool tendencies from management. 

HR is only there to save the company money. They will fabricate situations to prevent you from getting any benefits. 

Forced to feature some of the worst products on the market. Asked to promote Sundial brands over more popular high quality products from other brands. 

Pay is lowest in the industry. 

Met many cool people in the retail division but the HR is inhumane and spiteful. High turnover because the company doesn’t value their employees. 

Managers are expected to work unpaid overtime to keep the stores open. The company will leech your energy and availability and drain everything they can from you.
