Nutters Everyday Naturals

The work environment is fine enough for retail, pretty standard expectations. There is, however, an INCREDIBLY MASSIVE amount of products and food/grocery items you have to be aware of how to use, when to use, what not to take with, etc. They do training and offer extra courses to bring you up to speed though. Basic retail duties like cleaning, sweeping, walking around the store to talk to customers, wiping down counters, etc.

While I enjoy the workplace and like my coworkers there is however a red flag area that could use improvement: Management- We had a fantastic manager when I started, and they had been there for 10+ years, all the way up until recently when they were "let-go" out of the blue for reasons unknown to any of the retail staff. This was a huge blow for our now incredibly small workforce at the store (employee turnaround has been crazy, we have lost around 10 or 11  staff since I was hired which might not seem like much but the store used to have multiple vitamin advisors, upwards of 5+ at a time and they kept these positions for YEARS) because we are now unsupported by a new, distant and uninterested manager who apparently has been with the companyat their main location for years but is unknowledgable about vitamins and what to reccomend (how do you work as a manager for a vitamin and supplement store and have been working with the company for years and NOT KNOW what people are looking for?). The manager constantly shy's away from questions from customers and puts the responsibilty on our already over worked staff, who are usually already helping multiple customers at a time already (an example of this is their sale day, "Power Day"- our old manager would be out on the floor asking people if they need help, running orders outside, relieving staff when they were too bogged down with multiple requests from customers or just in general being a good face for the store and chatting with people. Now, our manager hides behind the till, not leaving to deal with customer complaints or inquiries, hides in their office where they can't be asked questions from staff or customers, leaves early- in comparison our hours on this day used to be capped at 6pm, they now run the sale until 8pm in the evening(almost all staff at our location were against this but upper management did it anyway) and our old manager would almost ALWAYS stay at the store until 4:30-5 to help out our staff and deal with customers. Our new manager, however, has left as early as 3pm on a power day (leaving 5 hours until closing, that's 5 hours where anything could go wrong and we are left completely unsupported and without guidance)and has even taken a holiday on a power day coming up in the fall (this is unheard of, every staff including management was always REQUIRED to work power day, no exceptions). The manager has also made a completely inappropriate comment to a staff member in front of a visiting representative from another company, who had a booth at the store, AND CUSTOMERS on one of their first power day's at the store. 

We are a drowning workforce at this store, with no helpful management whatsoever and the toll this has taken on our workforce is astounding: previously happy and friendly staff are now interfighting with each other, no one trusts anyone because we are so overworked and almost never get relief, and with a bad manager how are we supposed to be good Vitamin Advisors when our only example and guiding force (ie. manager) isn't able or willing to be a good influence on us? 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The customers. Always pleasant to help they know what they want. Willing to ask questions about new products. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Having enough hours to work per week.
Head office only want 15 to 20 per week. But they wanted you available for full-time. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Competitive favoritism. Everyone knew when the manager was  impressed or not. Based on the tasks assigned to you.


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Quite slumps between small rushes of customers. Mostly cleaning the store.

The old time girls are all very set in their ways and there can be a fair amount of drama between them. The manager is awesome but I think feels his hands are tied so nothing can be done to fix the rift. He's always willing to help and teach you anything you want to learn. Other than the drama and occasional bullying/silent treatment, it's a fun place. Hours are awesome, pay is minimum wage but whatever, and most of the girls are willing to help and fun to be around. 

I enjoy working at Nutters, Airdrie.  No work place is perfect, but I feel like it's a safe place, productive, educational environment.  I both work the grocery and vitamin sections, you learn something new all the time, and most regular customers are very amazing people, and both our managers are amazing people, they're very genuine. 

I enjoyed my work I did at Nutters but management needs training  in people skills and they  need a management that respects their employees because it's the employees that do the work for the company ,at the Nutters I worked for, employees have no value,there is an untouchable manager that needs to be accountable for her actions ,as long as she is there the company will go downhill at that location,(my opinion of course).

Management fostered a very toxic environment.  The workers were all in it together, supporting one another which was the only plus.  The store could go hours without a customer.  Management was rude, dismissive and shady.  Even after being told where the issues were with the management team they refused to remove to toxic person.

Chronically understaffed. Poor communication, constant confusion, refusal to work with student schedules. Lack of feedback, does not respect employees and skills bring to the workplace. 
Very much enjoyed helping customers, there’s a huge variety of products that you have to know about.
Randomly, strange things would happen. 

I have really enjoy my time working at Nutters Kamloops. The management is kind and flexible. It is nice working for a family run business (Kamloops is a franchise store) the store is well laid out and fairly organized. I enjoy the vitamin training and staff discount. The rest of the staff is amazing! Located at a bus stop which is a must for me. 

I at first I loved working at Nutters but things changed when a management was hired. The manager flavored certain people making it difficult to work within a toxic environment. I was given later shifts while others repeatedly were given better hours and weekends off.  

A typical day at work is very stressful. Everyone gets screamed at for no reason. Employee turnover is very high, full-time hours are promised, but you receive part-time and no benefits. Complaints aren't addressed anywhere since it's privately owned. Avoid at all costs, save your mental health and go elsewhere to work.
