As of writing this, I'm currently a pre-certified officer, which pays $20.47 per hour, the job can be hectic, CATSA and management don't do much to help you other than expect you to do your job without being concerned if you need to hydrate or feel overwhelmed when starting, but you get used to to fast. Co-workers are great, friendly, transparent, having conversations with them is probably the most enjoyable part of the job. Things feel very unorganized, you do learn a lot about airport security, which is nice, most of the time you're just checking boarding passes and telling people what to remove.

Paladin advertises themselves as one of Canada's best managed companies
(That doesn't feel like it, this could be the case for regular security, but definitely not when it comes to airport security, they feel brand new to the airport scene and employee's have mentioned that they're worse than the previous contracted company, GardaWorld)

There are plenty of things the airport could do to improve to help security and passengers get through things smoothly. A TV demonstration while passengers are waiting in line to get through the checkpoint can help the diversing process similar checkpoints in the states. 

Checkpoint C could use multiple screening officers to help with diversing and boarding pass checks, normally only one person is doing both, but with two it's a lot more efficient with less rechecks too.

Sometimes they close checkpoint lines when it's not busy, then when it's suddenly busy, it takes over 10 minutes or so to open up a checkpoint, which can also be the same time when it stops being busy. Just feels like timing is always poor.

You can't get full-time hours, there are screening officers that I've talked to who have been there for a few years, that work 5 days a week, but only get 6 hours a day, it is based on seniority, some have demanded for full time hours and can't get them.

It seems like people are constantly leaving the job since Paladin has joined. I am hoping for improvements from the company, but morale does seem pretty low overall and something needs to be done. 

The work itself is fine. The salary is fine, same with the benefits. CATSA employees (including P.O.'s, trainers, fellow screening officers,etc.)  are all good, kind people. So, CATSA itself isn't the real issue, it's the subcontractors they hire like G4S. G4S's management/hr/scheduling/uniforms is horrible, the company itself is corrupt and there is quite a bit of nepotism, so advancement is pretty much out of the question if you're not buddy, buddy with them. Even though it's a unionized job, the company (G4S) went against legal contracts and laid people off (regardless seniority) because they could not do certain positions due to medical reasons. While those lower in seniority (by at least a 100 people) stayed. They use "operational requirement" as a means to do whatever they want. They write  people up all the time in order to fill a "quota." So, that if you ever do choose to make a complaint, they have a whole file to use against you.  The level of harrassment present (like those mentioned) from subcontractors like G4S is ridiculous. Hence, my low rating. Sorry, CATSA.  

What is the best part of working at the company?
Friendly environment with flexible shift, you can give away your shift if you have an unexpected issue, you also can pick up shift if you need to make more money to achieve something in your personal life, You have SDM and other experienced screening officers around you ready to help you succeed in your role, You really feel supported. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It's a critical task knowing that the safety of people taking flight lies in your hand, that's the most critical situation, but you'll really not going to feel that pressure as you have the support to be able to accomplish your tasks which is to identify all types of threats intended to go in the plane and to prevent them. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly and respectful, There is a diversity of people which really match the culture of Canada.

I worked there for a year and a half and I couldn't change my shift despite having bi-annual shift bids. Manager's are not your friend here. Don't trust them! Don't say anything personal to them. Your coworkers will report you and stab you in the back. HR and Payroll do not have phone numbers and rarely reply to emails. I tried to get a day off a month in advance and they didn't reply until it was too late and they also didn't reply to my resignation letter for several weeks. 

Pay is fair for the role. Training material was good and trainers were great. However the delivery of the training material was chaotic. Trainers were engaging, nice and fun and very helpful. However training material was rushed. As soon as they read off the PowerPoint slide would go to next. You didn't have time to finished writting notes or even think of what was being presented.

The organization is very unorganized. You could be scheduled Monday to Friday for 2 weeks then they would tell you last second that your scheduled changed and now you're working many days straight with 1 day off in between on a Wednesday. You can never make plans outside of work because you could be and would be notified of schedule change last second and often times they call you just to say you don't have hours or shift cancelled.

I've heard of a lot of other issues but haven't experienced myself yet...

Seeing planes outside the window each day is all I’ve got

Missed and late breaks, daily breaches of our CBA, missing pay, CARE culture has no meaning here. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful, frustrating, countless mistakes that the company never learn from. They are brand new to aviation screening and are not understanding we are nothing like the rest of their security roles. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
All customer service. Sugar coat everything for them or you get complaints made. Very physical job, mentally demanding when it comes to dealing with the travelling public.

What is the best part of working at the company?
So far I haven’t found the best part. Maybe their idea of what they were going to do when they took over but they can’t execute that still. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Most stressful part is their pay system that doesn’t detail enough, doesn’t calculate properly and it’s always wrong. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
That’s a hard question to answer because they are taking over for the last contractor so it’s all the same people there and it can be a hostile work environment. So I can’t really say yet. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Typical day is spent still hoping they’ll step up and execute the changes they claimed they were going to implement.

If you like dealing with the public, nice people or the not so nice ones, then this job might be right for you.
It can be very redundant in terms of your daily duties depending which departments.
Plenty of oversights from managers and upper management. Continuous training, evaluations & exams. It can be stressful sometimes. 
In regards to career advancement, it is disappointing as the employment structure is unique. 
Pay is slightly above average if you are a full time employee, hopefully it will improve more.
Overall, you'll have a chance to encounter different types of people as your work is in the airport.

I would not recommend anyone to come work here unless they plan to work a number of years then move on to another job. Or do not plan to stay long term. The pay is decent and the work isn't physically demanding. 
But you are constantly subjected to one of the most toxic work environments ever. Terrible management, poor work culture, terrible co workers. Bad scheduling, poor communication, pay roll doesn't pay properly. Management will also play mind games with you. This company has a myriad of issues that I cannot begin to fully fathom. I DO NOT recommend anyone to work here long term. 

This company is a complete waste of time. I went through every step — references, security clearances, fingerprints, multiple office visits — and was even given onboarding materials. For over a year they strung me along with empty promises of start dates that never came. Communication was vague, HR was unreachable, and accountability was nonexistent. The level of disorganization and disrespect for applicants is shocking. If this is how they treat potential employees, I can only imagine what it’s like working here. Save yourself the frustration and look elsewhere.
