The company is stuck in a mindset of ever more growth, pushing hard to reach goals with a program based around unsolicited calls to current and former guests to encourage them to come into the store for routine maintenance etc. Actually a violation of the privacy laws in some provinces. This happens just so the guest will enter the store, where they are then fair game to be tag teamed by subsequently higher levels of skilled selling employees, until they are sold something. 
There is no work life balance, and the People first company that may have existed at one time is now a huge mash up of lions gunning for the alpha position under the Signet umbrella. The company spends money illogically, cutting corners in store, yet having management travel once a year to resort like destinations for "training" which could be accomplished with one on one visits from upper management, or over the phone. The conferences don't actually teach you any hard skills, but rather are a conference to shape your mind to prepare you for the next set of selling tactics they wish to roll out to the masses. This is very sad as the company boasts many employees who actually do truly care about the milestones their guests have in life, and they have put the years in to be there from birth to marriage, only to be forced to risk harming that very relationship with selling strategies like offering credit cards that they must do with each guest three times, or be fired for not using this "tool". Worst part is if you actually get paid decently, your daily and monthly sales goal is much higher, and you have to be on point in an extremely competitive environment in order to not be let go, which makes your working relationships difficult when you are clambering over your colleagues to make a buck just to ensure your numbers are in line with the company set daily goals. Underperform and you're out. Which is quite sad when there is no programs to teach the soft selling skill of relationship building, because the focus is just on closing the guest on a sale. It feels like saying to a new employee, here, this is the job, now I know you don't know how to crawl or walk yet, but if you don't run, you won't work here anymore.

The current supervisor of the Repair Workshop is confrontational, and micromanaging. He steals ideas to solve problems from employees after telling them "that's no good". English is his second language, and yes, sometimes it's just a translation issue. He will often come over and interrupt the job you are doing to reassign you to a different job, then get a second person in the middle of their job to complete your work. He will berate you and ask the same question 3-4 times trying to break you and catch you in a lie. He is very mistrustful of his employees, and constantly hovers over them while they are doing their job. Any talking between employees in his department, and he rushes over: "Why are you talking? No talking" even if the discussion is pertaining to a particularly difficult job.

The women in the department are expected to know 4 different jobs (personally, I am a polisher, rhodium plating, QC, and shipping), while the men are allowed to sit and do the job they were hired for. Knowing multiple jobs it good for if one person takes a vacation or is sick because the department can still handle the workload, but this blatant favouritism is annoying.

Health and safety isn't a particularly big concern (although, with being bought out the new company is at least trying to pay lip service to it).

Dress code is metal free and absolutely NO jewellery. Women, that means legging and yoga pants are acceptable; be prepared to remove your hair from what ever style it's in. Men, no belt buckles. Wear shoes that are easy to slip off because you go through a large, standing metal detector 5 times a day when you leave the Workshop, and your shoes go through an x-ray machine. Water bottles must be clear; and no liquids or food is allowed out once taken in. All pockets must be sewn shut.

Summer hours mean a half day on Fridays, and regular lunches hosted by the company are great to meet the people from the other department.

If you are a jeweller/stone setter/polisher by trade and training, you are not allowed to work for another company or yourself making, repairing, or selling jewellery while you are employed here.

Working at Peoples, I work  as a consultant with guests to try and find items that meet their needs. In a Typical day we would open the store make sure the jewelry is out and organized in the right place. When this is done there will be one person who opens the tills and goes through the emails to see if there are changes to prices or request from other stores for our product. Now the second person on will count the jewelry to make sure every piece is there and accounted for. If a piece is missing we have to track that piece down. After we open our doors we will greet all and any guests that come into the store, we will also do some shipping and receiving, as well as take in repairs from guests. I have learned so much from working at Peoples, I have learned how to tell diamonds apart as well and the behind the scenes work which has been very rewarding. The best part about working at Peoples is the faces of the guests when they come in to look for the special ring, or when they come in to get it sized and they tell us the story. The co-workers are fantastic they are always willing to teach you and this is great to help learn new things. The hardest part of the job is when you need something but its not available to you, or getting the product in on the specific date, but it can always be done. The most enjoyable part of the job is the guests and the coworkers. They are a team and they all work together.

People’s Jewellers is a family name, and when I was first hired on I was excited to work for such a great name, and promised a competitive commission rate, only to find out that it was .25% that is a quarter of one percent. I was told to increase that, I had to hit my sales targets 3 months in a row. I found out in order to increase that, you will need to hit a sales target of $300,000 in a fiscal year. To put that into perspective, .25% that’s 12.50 on a 5,000 sale. There is a lot of pressure to hit your sales targets, and credit targets. 

Management is hit or miss. I started with a great manager, who moved on. Our replacement had no regard for courtesy to staff members, and requests for “time off” were met with demands to never be asked again. Schedules were put out a week before, and requests for time for appointments were laughed off. Bringing this up the ladder to District Managers seemed to help; but there was no follow-through. 

The customers are great; and if you find a good team I’m sure you can have a great time. However, it seems that the company is very poorly run.

They start you off basically minimum wage, the commission is very low and hard to get at this location because it’s so slow. I feel like this whole company needs a revamp on their management employee relationships. It’s very hard to get a raise working at this location because again it’s so slow. They put a lot of pressure on employees to sell which ended up causing people to argue with eachother and fighting over customers.... there is a lot of gossip and talking behind backs even in management. I left mainly because of the new management that came in and was clearly not professional at all and talking about employees behind their backs. The only thing I liked about it was working with the jewelry was amazing. If they worked out the kinks in management and came up with better ways for us to be able to get customers rather than cold calling people who never asked to me called them MAYBE I would have stayed longer but not even being heard out for a pay raise was really disappointing, especially when the wage is so extremely low.

Best job I have ever had. You will get compensated very well if you put in your share of hard work. Expectations are high but achievable.
Upper management is professional and they treat everyone with respect.The worst part of the job is that it's a commission environment which causing some friction amongst team members.
The best part is the compensation and you get to work with beautiful merchandise.
They provide you with training and the tools but you have to take ownership of your own development.
Be aware: this is an American company with head office being located in USA which means they will do anything to support the US economy not the Canadian. Meaning they order all supplies from US and all support staff is there. 
There is no job security. You can be on the street without warning. They might even fire you with cause if they manage to come up with a reason to do it.

They expect a lot from you for min wage, if you are a part time, you have no good benefits and only 1 week vacation, start up commission is 1%  your sale, and doesn't go up until you reach a ridiculous total, then you are up to 1.5%- RIDICULOUS
Management is horrible, you can't rely on anyone, everybody talks about everybody, and the human resources personnel is even more ridiculous-
 Oh! this company does not provide a reference letter when you leave, and it doesn't give an exist interview, so if you are intending on staying for 2 years or so, just know that they won't give an appreciation letter saying how productive you have been. Terrible - I don't recommend working at this company- cuz really you will be wasting your time- You are just a number! 

the most enjoyable part was my co-workers, all the woman I worked with were incredible, beautiful inside out, fun to work with, competent, this company doesn't deserve them

After arriving we checked for security breeches after finding none we proceeded to get ready for the day - opening the vault and filling floor cases and windows.
I learned about team building and helping each other with sales by complementing the guest on their choices and that working on commission made everyday a challenge and fun, I also found that one does not need to be pushy to make sales but rather a compliment goes a very long way as well as being sincere.
Management was good to discuss how one could become better at sales
Coworkers were competitive at times which is good and keeps you on your toes!!
I really did not find any part of the job hard
I found it really enjoyable to be a member of a winning team!

On a morning shift we enter the store 30 mins before opening, there is always two employees in the store at all times for saftey. We get the computers on, open the safe,take jewels out and replace to their cases. when the jewels are in cases, and in windows are set we open the doors. Once the store is open we then count all the jewels in the cases. ( we count every day, input in computer to have balanced cases) We receive new product, repairs daily. My manager is great, she's a great leader, and we work as a team. My co workers  are helpful, and very professional. Our day is always busy, we do not ever have nothing to do. The hardest part of the job is getting everything done in the short amount of time. The most enjoyable part of the job is working with the clients, it is very rewarding to help some one buy the special gifts for their loved ones

As much as I enjoy sales and meeting new people, I would not want to work at People's Jewellers again. The commission and pay are ridiculously low for how much responsibility you have to ensuring the security of store and customer products as well as the high sales expectations. I didn't hate everything about working there, I learned a lot, HIGHLY improved my communication skills and confidence, met some awesome coworkers and I am proud to say that I think I helped a lot of sweet couples find their ideal engagement rings/ gifts. However, for all of the times I was yelled at by ungrateful customers, managers who scapegoated me and the nightmares that came from repairs being lost, over priced or just not done properly I'd say that peoples jewelers employees deserve much better pay for what they do.
