I applied to a permanent part time job posting that stated 22.5 hours per week, which would be the equivalent to a 0.5 FTE. During general orientation I come to find out that I have no FTE. On top of that I have absolutely no say in my availability, and therefore schedule. That schedule is booked in 6 weeks blocks.  Unless you are willing to limit your availability by a certain number of hours, you will be forced to work a Contential schedule that has you flipping from night shift to day shifts every 2-3 days, every week. If you would like a specific day off, you must put in for an unpaid vacation day.

Nothing about that is permanent part time. You are a glorified casual with no control over your schedule and your life.

Staff to patient ratios are dangerously high, which often leads to patients being grossly mismanaged.

When it comes to management they have a tendency to not respond to emails when a concern is brought forward and hide behind the wording a subpar collective agreement when it comes to scheduling matters. When you do get a response, it's the same word salad that gets copy and pasted over and over again, with no change actually taking place.

Culture within the specific department I worked in was wonderful. However in units like the ICU it absolutely toxic to new staff. The physicians in the ER have absolutely no respect for my profession, yet mismanage patients almost every step of the way.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with great staff, someone always having your back and feeling like a team. The mental health unit nurses are some of incredible people who want to truly help others, both patients and staff. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The patient load. There are no PSWs in the units which would relieve  some of the stress and all of the tasks that nursing staff have to do. The amount of patients nurses have can be overwhelming at times and if there were PSWs the nurses would be able to complete their job and feel like they could be the nurses we all want to be. Simply getting through medications, dressing changes, and doing the best we can but not being able to go above like we want, can wear down on you and why we went to school, to help others, not simply survive. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Depending on the unit you’ll have lots of support from staff and managers, to porters and housekeepers, some days just feel brighter around those people. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Usually you get in and get your assignment, then work as hard as you can to complete all of your assessments and medications and deal with any tasks that come up. Completing personal care, bringing patients to tests or different units if there are no porters and running around.

The people on my unit are great, which is the only reason I have stayed so long.  Management only cares about money.  It's certainly not 'Patient Centered Care'.  We are always running short, and many nurses on our floor have been injured, despite what the sign near the staff entrance says. The hospital is top heavy with management, and too short of nurses.  The contract seems to mean nothing, as management does whatever they want.  Unfortunately, they hospital know they have the power, as the best paying jobs for nurses in the area.  It's a shame community nursing doesn't pay better... 
We have to pay $$$ for parking.  The cafeteria closes at 1700 during the week and is not even open on the weekends.  There is now a Tim' s kiosk open 24/7 which is hugely overpriced.  Big brother is always watching as well.. we now have swipe in and out of work.  It's always been practice that you show up 15 minutes before work and give report, then leave.  Now, we have to wait until 0700/1900 to swipe out, or we got docked 15 minutes.
Sigh...  frustrating....

This position was in health care which is a world unto its' own. It was a position when I enjoyed going to work each day. Depending on the management team in place, I worked as either the benefits administrator or a generalist. In the generalist role I performed everything from labour relations, health & safety, return to work, pay equity, salary and benefits and recruitment. It was a multi-union employer where I had to ensure my knowledge of all collective agreements was current.
I had the personal satisfaction and the respect of being the human part of human resources.
It was a sad day when due to amalgamation and duplication of services which occurred in most health care facilities that my job was eliminated

Working for PRHC is a love hate relationship, I loved patient care and having supplies required for the job as well as the salary is decent. The major issue with PRHC is management, they encourage the staff to be disrespectful and inappropriate by their own behaviour. If you try to even bring a problem forward you will find yourself in trouble, and the one who being raked over the coals. Management is constantly pushing more and more on the staff across the board, house keeping, nursing, porters, etc. It’s not uncommon to miss breaks or leave late, and if you ask for Over time pay they will blame it on you for not taking your break or leaving on time. The pay isn’t really worth the amount of stress this job will cause you.

Pathologist assistants in lab were very friendly, were very team-oriented and respectful creating a wonderful environment to work in. Specimens from biopsies would come in everyday to the grossing lab, and a supervisor pathologist would supervise. The hard part of the job is that everyday organs with new conditions are examined and at times it is hard to distinguish between benign and malignant tumours. The most enjoyable part of the job is the people, and the friendliness with which everyone works.

For the operating room, it is a very tense environment, there is a lot of pressure and a need to do things quickly and carefully. Everyone works together, all the responsible personnel during surgery.

House keeping is fast paced and quality is a must, If you like working with a team/independently in a quiet environment and are looking for part-time work this job is perfect. The new Head Housekeeper is amazing to work with and the Administrator's are all very welcoming. 

I have worked in a ICU setting for the last 28 years of my 40 years of working. I have worked in three different centres and I must say I have enjoyed my time at PRHC. We have a great Manager who tries to accomadate you within the guidelines of the union contract, I must say its not easy being a Manager of over 100 staff, so I feel she does  a good job. I enjoy the change and challenges that can occur within your work day as I am quite flexible and deal well with change. I also enjoy teaching new staff who I have had the opportunity of precepting

Great bunch of caring people in the maintenance dept. Pretty casual but sometimes stressed environment due to the need for immediate repairs at times. The place itself could have been designed with more back up systems or redundancy. Management was very appreciative when you pulled a rabbit out of a hat. The trades guys were all pretty cool and everyone helped everyone when needed. Good place to learn. Nobody watching over your back

Worked there for 38 yrs, slowly watched the decline of healthcare, cleanliness, management, & food. Healthcare has plummeted this is more a moneymaking  business now. It's  filthy. They hire money oriented management who know nothing about anatomy or disease, very management heavy. Staff is short most of the time, rushed&angry. Some management are likened to pitbulls. Airline food no nutrition whatsoever,  smells awful.
