Some people don't like to do their jobs, and that makes others' jobs difficult. My only real complaint about working here was a few questionable hires. Constantly late, try to leave when you get there early, when certain people were working the day/afternoon shift I knew the place would be trashed.
That is NOT all the staff.

Management is pretty good.
They're weird and strict about some of the strangest things but are also really cool about a lot of stuff.
Really pushed making "quotas" on in store deals and getting sign-ups for petro-points. Not really a big deal or difficult; someone looking through candy for awhile recommend a 2-for deal, looking at drinks recommend the current energy drink sale, etc...

Tried to tell employees they would be held responsible for drive-offs and asked us to sign an agreement. That isn't legal, by the way. A few of us didn't sign it and management accepted their mistake and scratched that plan.

I worked a set schedule so this didn't effect me, but other employees told me they are really good for schedule adjustments and stuff when they are needed.

I called in sick once - I was sick all evening, and even spoke with my manager before I left that there was a high probability I would be calling in sick. They will try to act like you have no choice. Explain to them how little choice they have, no biggie.
Shift was covered eventually. I guess nobody wants to work nights.


Oddly enough, I can't count how many times I was called in to work at various locations. There was ALWAYS perks of going in, such as a gift card for Petro-Canada.

They do not pay overtime; you agree to this when you are hired.

One time I was called in on a holiday at a location that was not my regular one, that has a separate payroll. I was paid my Holiday pay from my main location, time and a half at the working location, and was given a $50 Petro gift card, AND they paid my cab for coming in on a holiday.

I am not saying to expect a bunch of free stuff, what I'm saying is that YOU ARE REWARDED FOR GOING THE EXTRA MILE, ALWAYS.
Management is REALLY GOOD for rewarding hard work.


Free coffee, occasional slushie, occasionally seasonal products being taken off the shelf were allowed to be taken home. One person a day was allowed a free carwash, as it has to be tested.


I live in Galt and the location is in Hespeler. I was working nights. The bus routes changed and made my 10 hour shift turn into around 14.5 hours with commute. I had to quit, as this was just to much. Shortening the shift would have done no good, as I was already catching the last and first bus (waiting for over an hour in the mornings).
I would certainly work here again, or at any of the owners' other locations.

Other sales associates were great to work with. I had volunteered to work backshift for a month until someone returned. The manager at the time (no longer works at this location) was grateful for the fact that she didn't have to hire someone else. There was zero training for backshift. I was her only employee who was working Morning, Evening and backshifts each week. I was working a backshift, given maybe 5h BEFORE the commute home to get sleep and return to work (Sunday10pm to Monday 8am then come back into work for 2pm) it generally took me about an hour to 2 hours to get home from work as I worked and lived with my alieving staff member who had our only means of transport aside from the transit. 
I was generally skimmed on pays. Mornings after I'd spend a night having stocked, cleaned etc all night while dealing with general harassment from customers through the pass-through which barely made me feel safe, the manager would come in, and without reviewing any of the cameras or even looking around the store would accuse me of having done nothing all night. Even if the store was now spotless in comparison to when she had left prior to her coming into work in the morning.
The manager did this very often and generally made me feel really bad about what I did as a whole.

During 9-12h shifts we weren't given breaks, we were working alone in the station (there is supposed to be 2 people working at all times) and the manager had a tendency to threaten to fire employees "as a joke" if they didn't do exactly what she told them to do, even if it wasn't work-related.

In my last week of working with petro-canada I had been hospitalized, the manager had DEMANDED that I come into work and leave the ER to do so. I promptly said no. The doctor who had been attending to me had bared witness to the conversation and put me on medical leave for 3 weeks to give me time to find a new job and leave the toxic work environment I was in. 

After I had quit the manager persisted to try and get me to return. Asked about me from other employees and harassed them into passing messages along for her to me.

Openning the store at 7 in the morning and counting the cash and putting the fire exstinguishers out beside the pumps. During the winter salt the areas around the pumps and leading to the enterances. I would then greet customers as they entered the store and when they approached the counter. I worked alone so I had to be alert at all times for theives and any issues that may arise. At slow times if the floors were dirty I would mop, and when the coolers were running low I would run to the back grab a case of pop/water or what ever was needed and fill the coolers form the front so I could keep an eye on the store. At 2:30 the counting of the lotto tickets and changing shift for my co-workers that were coming in at 3 in the afternoon.

During this time with Petro I was going to NBCC Saint John and I learned alot at the store as well. Repetition is not always a bad thing, I do like to do different things everyday, but I founf the more I do something the quicker I get at it and I want to learn more to branch out when the time is right.

Honestly my manager was not around that much, there would be notes on the till in the morning from the night shift telling me to do this or that. I worked mostly the weekends because I was going to school during the week, and the manager I was told only came on Tuesdays.

My fellow clerks were friendly to me and one another, like any workplace there were issues with this or that but nothing to serious that anyone got repremanded for. Again I worked by myself so I was on good terms with all my co-workers.

I caught on fairly quik to the computer system and any new changes that arised but the hardest part of the job was having no breaks. Working by myself for 8 plus hours was alittle difficult when nature calls.

Seeing new people everyday, some faces were regulars that I built a repour with them had to be the best part of the job, a sence of community.

I would only ever recommend if you couldn't possibly ever find anything else in your area to work at.

-Training was done by someone who was only there for 2 weeks longer than myself, you are taught the bare minimum and thrown into the fire after maybe a shift or two.

-Unless you have the day shift, you are entirely alone. If anything ever happens, everything is left to you to fix, and with your very little training, you generally don't know the answer.

-Overtime is imposed at random and generally not incentivized in any way. (I never saw an increase in pay in any of my overtime hours) You will sometimes have worked an 8 hour shift, and then the person that is supposed to take over for the next shift simply doesn't come, forcing you to stay, pray and wait for your manager to get someone else there.

-Horrible work culture, you are generally alone, save for the 15ish minutes interactions you'll have when swapping in and out with other employees. There's also the aspect of some employees simply handwaving their responsibilities on their last shift of the week, letting the standards of their work drop for the next person to clean up. For me, this was felt immensely in Night shift. The other that did night shift, was most definitely not doing their night shift specific duties that involve maintaining the gas station such as filling shelves, cleaning the floor, checking for paper in all the machines and taking out garbage, among others.

its a easy job show up on time and take orders as to what the person wants in there tank, ask if they want the windows done and if they would like the oil checked. the hardest part of the... are the people that think that they can pull a fast one on you. the ones that are willing to lie to get you into trouble as to what they have told you to put into the tank and most gas stations will keep a voice recording of what you say it's built into some stores as a safety feather or a buddy system set up if there are more than one jockey working at a time. some stores around the country will have a store policy where if something happens like that you will pay the difference out of your pocket. the workplace culture is pretty decent as you are there to make it easier on the person to get gas and stand out in the good and bad weather. enjoyable part of the job is getting to met new people from anywhere in the world it's maybe one of the few places you will met and see some things that maybe will shock you and make you laugh. what will you learn working as a jockey.... make sure you to repeat the number that person tells you and get a yup or yes, don't walk into traffic without looking first. make sure to rack the pump please dont leave it in there so they drive away with it makes for lots of paper work and you may not have a job after. don't get mad if someone talks down to you it sadly part of the job ( just make fun of them with your other gas jockey).

I worked at a PC for 3 years, things I learned:
- They prefer that you harass regular customers with the same questions/promotional offers that you already know aggravates them just in case a mystery shopper is somewhere in the line, basically no discretion allowed in trying to improve customer service, threats of dismal occur if you don't harass everyone with promotional offers;
- Some mangers intimidate you to pay for "apparent" losses from inventory counts (ie. cigarettes, lottery, etc.);
- They typically try to select the people they know they can take advantage of to put on a salary. They make it feel like it's a promotion to the person, but the person ends up working way more hours for no additional pay, are expected to come in on a moments notice for any issues, and get blamed more when things go wrong. 

One benefit though: I knew in my heart there were employers/companies who didn't treat employees like this, it inspired me to go to college. I have had absolutely great employers since.

Advice: Look, I realize you might just need a job, there's nothing wrong with that. Just please don't buy into any career promises they may make to you. Let me put it this way, if you're doing a great job there, you would be even more appreciated at some other company that involves customer service.

What is the best part of working at the company?
As a full-time employee I was able to get a very small amount of dental coverage which helped me get some emergency work done. Unfortunately the benefits only covered $2000 which is less than 3 visits to a dentist. About the only other upside was some of my coworkers were nice and I also got a small discount on some store purchases.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Dealing with customers. People treat you like complete garbage. You are expected to be a punching bag and take abuse all day. Also the workload vastly exceeds the number of staff on shift to keep everything running smoothly. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Abusive and mentally torturous. The company has a policy that states you are not allowed to talk back to arrogant, rude customers, of which are the majority that come on to the premises. The upper management is careless to these issues because it doesn't affect them. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Some days were slow to start but then by noon I was stressed to the max and fed up with dealing with idiots. Other days I'd barely get a chance to get in the door and the place was already going nuts. By the end of the day I was angry and frustrated.

My work starts mostly in the evenings. My gas station is located in residential area. It will be very busy in the evenings. I meet different people daily. Since they head back to home from work, usually they will be very tired. I always try them to cheer them up. I feel very happy while doing my job because I get chance to make them happy in which I see my happiness.
In this job I have learned that Customer service plays a key role in gaining new customers as well as retaining old customers.
Management is good and supportive in the place I work. They help us when we are in real troubles.
Co-workers are cooperative and we enjoy our time working with each other.
There is no such thing like hardest part because as you get familiar to the job work, it becomes easy to you to handle the pressure at work. Since you do the same kind of work daily, you should be the one who enjoys every moment of doing that routine kind of work daily.
Most enjoyable part of my job is meeting different people with different cultural backgrounds and knowing about their cultures.

First of all, this was my very first actual job and great experience. My dad owns a 8 pump gas station with a convenience store. I was lucky to been given privilege as an assistant manager and also working as a cashier during the nights. It was very tough as I just turned 18 but the pressure my dad and his employees put me had made me succeed. My typical day at work would be to start my shift which is usually in the morning around 8 a.m., I would first go into the office and burn a copy of the daily video recordings and keep it for future use. I would check every employee shift report to make sure daily sales matches with cash count and make sure everything balances. At times it can be a couple dollars off but there is a certain limit of not more than $20 more or less. I would then greet customers and try to have a friendly conversation with them as a tactic to bring in more business. I would make sure the store has a great overall appearance at all times and make sure customers have all their issues sorted out. The management was small but it made things a lot easier to handle. Not a big staff but it was the right size. My co-workers were great and I made sure we all had a friendly understanding. I really enjoyed working here!

Petro-Canada is not just a job it is a university. 

The hardest part of the job is as usual at the beginning to learn the main scope of work, but within the time becomes so easy and enjoyable, every day you can learn more useful things, networking and creating excellent customer relations is a key part of the success. As manager you have the chance to create a good profile, and you have all the support you need, hire people you believe are awesome assets for the company and loyal to Petro-Canada and the marketer you are managing for. If you work honestly and focused, they really value your contribution to the company. One of the things I love the most is the fact that they always listen to you and have respect for your opinion and help you to achieve your goals, projects within the company and always they like to accept your suggestions to improve every facility in all aspects, safety, health, use of PPE when applicable, I love the weekly safety meeting and the monthly safety meetings with the health and safety manager.
