Working for a short time there...I never in my life worked at a company with such poor management that intimidates, use bully techniques as I was bullied physically & mentally. As a result of being bullied mentally by the compression dept. manager who is in a high profile “Upper management” position as well and physically by an assistant drafting manager. I suffered from low work satisfaction and productivity, trouble concentrating at work, and mental and physical health problems. Bringing it to HR attention...they did absolutely nothing to help me. I was shocked, very disappointed, felt alone and very discouraged that this type of culture still exits. I've witnessed highly hard working, respectful, dedicated employees and friends who have been there for a long time let go when they've given so much to the company and Propak just discards them like garbage. I feel when the CEO sons became into the picture and were given high profile positions...it all went downhill from there. They are very disrespectful, rude, egotistical, self centered and seems to be money-money-money is the only thing on their mind and not how to improve or work with employees or team members to make the company a better place of trust or having worth & value working there. My self and others felt we did not trust them as far as we can throw them!
My advice to the CEO of Propak Systems Ltd. about how to improve the company...Take your sons out of the picture will be a big plus, over haul HR so they will address important situations with respect & empathy that makes the employee valued. That is their job!! Take a look at other department managers that use bully techniques, intimidation or discrimination of employees for their own benefit to get ahead or to satisfy their egos. The CEO needs to look at himself as well at his attitude and behavior he displays.


I have been in the industry for many years, worked at Propak for 5 years as an employee (Senior Buyer) and then back many times for short term or contract work.  I am not sure of the current corporate structure but it was privately owned by a couple mavens in the industry when I started ('Entrepreneur of the Year' type of mavens) ~ they had a successful business model and always had work - very aggressive sales group.  

My work habits and methods have evolved with the industry & I can work on my own with minimal orientation or assistance.  I did feel a bit sorry for newbies & joked that a "Sink or Swim" method was used, the last I was there it was getting better in that regard as the workforce and company grew.  

I liked that initiative was encouraged and rewarded, if it was successful - you were a hero.  If it wasn't - you were an 'example' for a long time.  It was up to you how you dealt with either outcome. 

Management was approachable and easy to talk to, listened to your ideas and were pretty quick with decisions on whether or not they could entertain or if it had to go back to the drawing board.

I still have an affection for the look and feel of Stainless Steel and the other high nickel alloys, and can look at a piece of pipe and know the size (and sometime the schedule!)... good times.  It was always exciting when a new job was booked into the schedule ~ I would try and sneak a peak at the preliminary drawings to see if there was something new or unusual.  

I liked working there and miss it ~ I moved to BC a couple years ago and there is really nothing around me that compares to the big ASME code design and fabricate shops in Alberta.

We were working in the oil patch, so the day started in camp. Then bussed us to site, where we then conducted a safety meeting. The days were long and the work was plentiful. 
I was an apprentice when I stared with Propaks field division, so I learned a lot about industrial electrical and the basics of wiring up oil and gas production plants.
The Management was pretty decent to their staff. I feel as-though not many of them cared about their jobs though. They liked to party all night and hide in their offices all day. Keep in mind this was Propaks field division (PPCL). I don't want to give Propak a bad name cause they are quality company, who does quality work.
The work place culture was pretty standard for a construction job.
I prefer working with tradesmen rather than white collar folk. Its just my preference...
There are many tough parts t this job. Everything is heavy and theres been cable pulls that 15+ people have been involved in.
Its not an easy job, but it pays. I was generally working in cold, dark areas, which can be hard on some people.
The pay checks were the most rewarding and enjoy full part of the job.

Propak is the best paying shop around, however one mistake in your first three months they boot you. No feedback or consultation just out the door without knowing what you even did, could be a safety infraction, or just a rough night with poor quality or production, you won't really know and there's no second chances.
 The culture is very "Clique-y" with settled people not really showing new people any respect, Infact quite the opposite, and that includes management. No feedback from supervisors. High safety standards.... sometimes. It has a reputation for being a revolving door for a reason. If you're a contractor stay far far away, they have a reputation for having bad experiences with contractors (especially rig welding contractors). If you gotta take it as a contractor make sure you submit a detailed inventory of all your personal tools that you're bringing on site, and get it signed by upper management, otherwise you might not be leaving with then at the end of the job.

I do not reccomend this company. Worked here for 6 years. Took everything i could out of the place and happily gave them the boot. If you are a young person taking your first steps into the industry use this place to get indentured and drop them before they hold you back from progressing in your trade. If you choose to work here enter with caution as they do not like people with a backbone that can defend themselves and speak up.

 When it comes to coworkers and management you will Hear alot of people talking bad about eachother yet patting eachother on the back. There were very few employees i had respect for. The management is another story, dont trust them or rely on them to be there for you. They are all long time employees with very little experience in the industy who are "lifers" that will bow down to the company. 

* if you are a minority think twice before accepting a job here because they do not like people with dark skin and accents. the company does not support diversity.

Management is very rude and lacking in politeness toward employees. 

I have been doing my best, working even on weekends for free and using advanced engineering software to meet their expectations and secure my position. However, my efforts have had a negative impact on me. 

Especially when I introduced technical ideas that management was unaware of or disregarded, it affected me greatly. They seem to lack fundamental knowledge of key technical principles, contrary to how they present themselves. 

I have often been told to "wash my mind," which is something I have never experienced in my entire career. This response came simply because I wanted to contribute my technical insights to the company.

I strongly advise engineers not to work there. You will likely face abuse and significant suffering.

Propak gave me excellent technical experience due to a manufacture shop being located on the premises. However, the office politics were very truculent and there is little opportunity for advancement within the company due to nepotism. Work here for about four to five years and then leave before your sanity goes. Also, Airdire is a spiritually degrading place to live and work due to the jive-plastic commuter tract home wastelands, the Potemkin village shopping plazas with their vast parking lagoons, the Lego-block hotel complexes, the 'gourmet mansardic' junk-food joints, the Orwellian office 'parks' featuring buildings sheathed in the same reflective glass as the sunglasses worn by chain-gang guards.

It's a good start for an apprentice. However advancement is limited to how well you can kiss butt. The benefits are good, but offset the slightly lower wage. It's nearly impossible to get fired unless you're a total screw up, which is good or bad depending on how you look at it. Don't accept a weekend position. It's pretty lax, but the there is no support, you'll get treated like garbage, and get the clean-up work. The premium may sound good, but it's not worth it. Management is definitely company men. Not really interested in what's best for you, and like to power trip and step on people. The experience is really great. You'll learn lots of different things and the job is really hands on. Never had an issue with any co-workers. Likeable guys for the most part. Really great place to start out and learn.

Great place to learn and start an apprenticeship. You learn a ton of information that I hear you wont learn up in camps ect. I've learned pretty much all essential skills of a Journeyman and it's all just practice, practice, practice.

Management is all politics as normal, and expect more out of everybody than what can be done, as usual. Provide best quality and quantity as possible.

Hardest part of the job is management would put you on one job one day, then swap you to another the next. If you make a mistake you never got to fix it, therefore never learn how to fix.

Most enjoyable part of the job are the four days on, three off. With possible OT if you want it.
