Royal Machine Solutions Inc.

A typical day here involves different aspects of manufacturing work, such as assembly,  installation, fabrication, welding and machining. We build various types of conveyors and other machines and projects. We work straight days with occasional overtime depending on work load, a great oppportunity to make some extra money. I have always found this accomodating to my own schedule due to a large and reliable team.

Workmanship at RMS is never sacrificed. If you cannot choose to accept criticism, learn from your mistakes, and continuously strive for improvement and high-quality work, you will have a hard time here or anywhere else.

But if you can, and you want to grow some deep roots in a young company with tremendous growth ahead, this is the place for you. 

Management is reasonable, not overreaching, listens to shop workers and makes logical decisions. 

The workplace culture is being improved daily by deliberate efforts by the owner and workers. We have implented Lean manufacturing--a methodology of efficiency, eliminating waste and struggle--across the board. This has made and continues to make RMS a better place to work for everyone. The difference I have seen made by Lean in my less than two years of tenure here is nearly incredible. There are videos documenting our progress on this front on the company Youtube channel. 

Ideas and suggestions are listened to and discussed, right down to those from the newest hire. 

The hardest part of the job is the mindset shift needed to understand the goal of the company. We are striving for greatness and continuous improvement. If you have not worked somewhere with a culture like this before, it will take time to understand it. Take it one step at a time and you will get it. We even have a guided program to gain an understanding of our goal as part of orientation. 

The most enjoyable part of the work here is, of course, the finished product. Seeing your ideas contribute to the functionality of a project is always something you can be proud of. The finished product is not just what goes out of the bay door, however. It is also the lessons you take from it. The skills you can build if you try here are limitless. There are clearly defined bonuses handed out here for demonstrating your proficiency in the different skills of the trade. 

I can say confidently that there is no place I would rather work. 

I worked at RMS for the last 2.5 years of my apprenticeship, and I loved my time there.

I can honestly say I had a very fulfilling and educational experience in the short time that I was employed there. The opportunities that presented themselves to me were apparent as soon as you look around the shop.

RMS is a very well equipped shop. I wouldn't consider the people that too advantages of the equipment here to be your average Millwright. During my time here, I was able to learn how to use and run the following machinery: shears, brake press, finger brakes, CNC waterjet and plasma cutters, CNC router table, CNC milling machines,CNC lathe, Tig Welding AC/DC for multiple materials and Fusion 360 modelling and programming software. While I may not have been an expert in all of these areas, I got to be very well versed in a very short amount of time. All of these machines were offered by the owner to be used on personal time, which benefited both the owner as I got better at things, and my self included as I completed many personal projects using the equipment provided. 

Because of this personal ambition that I had, the jobs that I was able to be sent to and my responsibility increased in the shop and in the field, which also in turn increased my pay level. 

RMS provided the freedom to learn as much or as little as you personally wanted to, but thats not what working here was all about either. RMS's wide variety of clientele basically guaranteed that you were going to be doing something different every week, which made the days go by fast, and provided a sense of accomplishment as you go job to job building relationships with different customers. 

RMS was and still is a growing company and are constantly trying to find the right people to fill the roles that become available as the company grows. Since I have left, new offices and a lunch room with AC has been added, and new machinery and shop organizational equipment as well. 

Overall, I loved my experience here at RMS, and I wouldn't have a second thought about coming to work here again. If you are the type of person who wants to improve your skill set constantly and have a real passion for the trade, a little bit of hard work will get you there working at RMS.

Poor working conditions and environment:
 The office is poorly organized, the air quality is extremely poor due to lack of ventilation and air circulation, heating and AC was presented in the form of a crummy AC unit and a dinky radiant heater which proved to be insufficient even for a single room.

Little to no company structure: 
 There are no managers or superiors at RMS, only the owner. Everybody reports to the owner and is assigned tasks by the owner in a dictatorial fashion. Due to this, expect little to no personal growth or advancement in the company.

Suggestions and concerns go unheard:
 Providing suggestions or concerns prove to be futile as they will either be ignored or shrugged away and not taken seriously. Yet the owner likes to ask new hires about how he should treat other employees when they make mistakes.  

Provide false promises:
 Upon being hired or during an interview you may be promised certain things or given hope that if you prove yourself they will be "shoveling money into your car". This is simply not true, any arrangements made with RMS should be taken with a grain of salt as they do not honor their arrangements made with employees.  

Inadequate work equipment:
 The computers that are in the office are not taken care of well and lack the performance required to carry out daily tasks as assigned. The mention of computers being replaced was heard numerous times although when a new computer was purchased it had gone to a new hire. Which would have been fine had they purchased new machines for the rest of the people in the office which they desperately needed.

Toxic company culture: 
 The general tone of the employees is set by the owner. By this I mean when the owner is upset or having a bad day,everybody else seems to avoid him and act as if they too are also upset. As conflict arises resolution is not something they seek. Between yelling matches heard across the shop or simple miscommunication, there seems to be no form of positive action to rectify any situation. 

I hope this review proves to be helpful and once again is not intended to be an attack at the company or its employees.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people on the shop floor are friendly enough 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The owner/management and there values they will push on you with great force as well as there constant disrespect for experiences and expertise.


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The company is run by the owner exclusively with no real decision makeing below him. the turnover rate seems to be insanely high and very few employees seem to know what there doing at this company. 
From the first interview at the company till my last minute every word from owner and office administration was extraordinarily   disrespectful I felt constantly talked down to and challenged on every word I said. For example even during my interview before i started they directly accused me of plagerising solidworks models I spent hours makeing for them unpaid. 
I would also like to mention during the time I worked at this company they had instituted a policy where they had a ai bot grade employees performance based on daily learning reports you would submit to it. I found this beyond insulting and dehumanising for a company as small as this.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
For me it was a lot of deburing parts for 8 hours straight (they asserted it was good training I was hired as a designer)

I have worked at Royal Machine Solutions for 6 years. 
When I started at Royal Machine Solutions, the company was still experiencing growing pains.
Since then, I have personally been involved in many challenges and changes over the years, that have improved my workflow, as well as our facility. I have reached levels over the last several years in areas where I would have never imagined I would be. I have grown a lot in my position with Royal Machine Solutions, mainly due to stepping outside of my comfort zone and challenging myself to accept technology and change as a part of my job.
It has been a process to get where we are now, but thanks to the many wonderful employees and management teams improvements and ideas in our shop and office, we have expanded into a lean and well-organized manufacturing facility that I have had the honor to be a part of.
We are always striving to make our facility a better place to work and through continuous lean implementations and employee suggestions, we are getting there one improvement at a time.
Working at Royal Machine Solutions is never boring. If you are a self-starter, can maintain high performance standards and you are willing to challenge yourself, this is the place for you.


A shame that this company is managed so poorly.

This isn't a spot for millwrights, or others who take pride in their work.

I watched the shop morale drop through the floor during my tenure with this company. This was due to Ownership's management style, and overall work experience.

Often left with questions about the job at hand, and talked down to when requesting information.

Dealing with subpar drawings as a fabricator, millwright, or machine builder, but Ownership refused to acknowledge root causes of issues and just wanted to pretend it was a world class business.

Wasted an hour of every employees morning to have show and tell about making lean improvements, but had no actual work to do.

Management needs to stop stretching employees outside of their job descriptions.

I always liked learning new skills. There was never a shortage of work. 

The owners expectations are high. But I appreciated working to a high quality standard and having the tools and equipment to achieve it.  There is no shop supervisor so a lot of time you are taking direction from the owner and he can be busy. But he is willing to train and invests time.

 I found the training videos really helpful in being confident in my job and learning new tasks. 

Compared to other jobs I have had this one had the most opportunity for variety and challenge. The work place is consistently getting better but every place has its issues.



I enjoyed the variety of work across several industries including food, recycling, paper and manufacturing. It was interesting to have access to a lot of different equipment in the shop that I wouldn't otherwise have exposure to. I also had the opportunity to work with some great people both within RMS and customers outside the company. I learned a lot in my time at RMS.

Completed work was held to a very high standard, which was a good opportunity to build a detailed oriented skill-set and be able to provide very high quality products and services. In return, this meant the work was challenging and stressful at times.

Management is an absolute joke, 0 direction. Owner relies on QR codes and poorly made and explained YouTube videos as a means to train new employees. When asking for direction you're talked down to or told to move on if it's too hard. Constantly undermined and pushed to do sketchy stuff and cut corners on jobs. 
Only saving grace is the shop manager. 
You'll be shushed by a specific millwright that works there and can't handle any type of pressure or stress when working. 

The equipment is all secondhand and absolute trash. 

Overall avoid this place. 

RMS holds high standards for it's products and employees in order to maintain a customer focused approach to manufacturing.  The management is extremely driven by efficiency and  a Lean philosophy  to ensure it's future is strong.

Is it a challenging place to work? YES.  Is it a place to develop and learn? YES.  Can it be stressful?  YES.  Is it always fun?  NO.

If you are looking for an employer that pushes you to be better and not focused on always handling you delicately, this company should be considered.
