As a full time shift nurse who worked exclusively nights (as there was not enough staff to provide service to a client who required 24 hour care) ... I am truly appalled and embarrassed for a number of reasons:

1. Witnessing first hand the daily anguish and stress put upon the family care giver who relied upon this company for staffing. Shifts could not be filled because the company pays well below the standard rate of pay for RN's (thus the turn over). The inexperienced staff sent to this home was dangerous for the client in terms of patient safety which caused undue stress upon the family, as staying up 24 hours a day to care for their loved one should not EVER be an option. 

2. The families (as always) are a pleasure to work with and it broke my heart as an RN with a BScN, who values my education and takes pride in providing quality patient care, watch this company hire inexperienced nurses who lacked the specialty training for this particular client. This not only sends the message that the company is just trying to fill the position to get paid by the insurance company, but also that the health and well being of the client is not a priority. Nurses would put their time in to get "more hours" and would apply for other jobs because they didn't feel valued as they were not paid the industry standard for like positions. This frequently left the client starting from scratch with new staff which was extremely stressful. 

3. There is absolutely no communication between the managers who are directly responsible for the staff in their respective units. Communication goes through the shift service coordinator, who in this particular case, truly cared and made an effort to listen and get results in terms of client requests (ie/ gloves, supplies, responding to concerns of the client and the RNs) but could only do so much as management turns a blind eye and the client, family care giver and nurses are left feeling like it is a game of survivor, where the front line staff form an alliance with the families and try to sort out problems on their own (nurses often bringing their own supplies to ensure proper infection control as the company fails to provide what is needed). 

4. Issues that are raised to shift co-ordinators are often not resolved and family care givers are left at the mercy of the inexperienced staff sent to their homes. As a result, the family care givers stop raising concerns as not to "rock the boat" as their loved one's care hinges on each shift being filled so the family doesn't have to stay up all night long providing complex critical care to their loved one.

5. THE PAY! In addition to the hourly rate being almost $10 less than any other RN job, I was left without pay MULTIPLE times and had to chase hundreds of dollars for hours worked. Sign on bonuses were fought for. The shift premiums promised were also not paid out when they were supposed to be, months went by before that pay was delivered and only because I constantly chased it.  Management was not apologetic. My loyalty was to the client and family as they were amazing, most nurses quit because they did not want to deal with the constant hassle. 

6. The family care giver often never received calls back and was left in a constant state of being in the dark as to the status of the shifts being filled. It was an emotional roller coaster I would wish upon no one.

To sum this up, I have moved on with my career as I deserved to be paid a proper wage and to work with an interdisciplinary team that provides evidence based practice in their care and who are family centred in the care they provide ... but it was not without a heavy heart, as leaving this family that I had the honour to know for a year was very difficult as the alliance we formed in the trenches of this health care system while dealing with this ridiculous company was very strong and we worked very well together. 

I hope this company learns to value their clients, family care givers and staff! This family and others alike deserve the very best care for their loved ones and it is with conviction that I encourage families and healthcare providers to steer clear of this company in every capacity.

My experience at SE Health has made me worry for the future of home care.

The days where you have two-person cares is where your exposed to working with unprofessional co-workers.  Frequently you will work alongside someone that doesn’t care to wear proper PPE amidst working in Covid times.  You will notice hand hygiene is scarce.  Many colleagues break therapeutic boundaries with clients i.e (accepts money for performing duties outside of our job description).

Coordination is nothing short of terrible.  When your hired they tell you that the minimum clients they will ask you to see is three.  There have been numerous times I have been scheduled to see ONE person.  Some days you could have a nice schedule however,  most days your looking at having inconsistencies with gaps in your schedule that could be 1 hour to 3.  Get a good data plan because you will end up spending a lot of time finding apps on your phone to keep you occupied in the car.

Coordinators don’t update addresses when asked.  So that means if there’s a wrong address on your schedule and you drive and embarrass yourself going to the wrong address it will be a continuous cycle for the next employee because nobody takes the time to update personal information.  The care plans are never updated and 99% of times are wrong i.e ( says your assisting someone with the commode and ambulation when they’re palliative and non-coherent). 

MANAGEMENT is an imaginative word at the Barrie location.  You’re means on communication with your manager is through e-mail.  You could be having difficulties with a client i.e ( their Alzheimer’s is progressing and now are violent,  your going to a home with a bug infestation) and they could care less.  Your emails will 95% of the time be ignored or if you do get a reply will be a week later saying nothing but “THANK YOU” and not acknowledging any of your concerns.

You will work alongside some pretty dishonest people at this company.  If someone is known to be inappropriate to clients and is reported by numerous staff no action will be taken if that person simply fills visits.  They do NOT care about the clients safety or the employees.  If there is someone there filling the visit that is all they care about.  



This place does not care about  the employees, they only care about how money money the managers make and their bonuses. hence: the high turnover rate! this place hires 5 new staff and 3 people quit within the first two weeks. such a stressful place to work for, supervisors and managers are useless and will always blame you for the bad things that happen in the company. SE is under staff in all and ever area (nurses, psw's, supervisors and service coordinators). co workers are nice people though. this place discriminates, they do not have any consideration what so ever, not enough desks for people to work, unrealistic expectations. while I work there there were two or three different supervisors because they either fire them or they quit without  notice oh! and two managers left as well. 

the paid is nothing to what the salary ratings says. they pay 16.50 to start, which is nothing compare to all the amount of work you have to do. their "raises" are 20 cents!!! 

managers and supervisors give you no support at all, but hey! they do give you more work and more responsibilities with the same pay. you literally have to learn the job  yourself, training is so poor! the worst I have ever hard in my life! . there is no structure at all! their system and computers suck!  if you are working an 8 hr shift, good luck with leaving on time, because you have to finish your work so pretty much your day is like 9 or 10 hrs of work and they don't pay you these hours, they called it overtime!! which you can't never claim!

if you think you can do this, thing before you apply! the pay is not enough , trust me even if you live at home, go and work somewhere else. the stress levels of this place will drive you nuts and will destroyed your life and feel miserable.  NOBODY IN THE CORPORATE OFFICE OR MANAGERS CARE ABOUT SE EMPLOYEES!

The clientele is strictly palliative patients. Just be sure you have the proper training and mind set to handle it. Training on the communication system is slim and not affective, I had to ask a lot of questions as it is very confusing. Some clients love you and appreciate your assistance, some are not so nice. Just like a normal job. What isn't communicated is that the rate of pay is per hour of patient care. The amount of time you spend driving (which is 60% of the time) you are paid significantly less per hour and km reimbursement is nothing to dance about. Once a client passes you now have empty slots on your schedule and out those hours until you get a new client. The local management for PSW in peterborough was beyond amazing. A lot of support and encouragement when it came to safety or hazards or treatment of staff. 
  The coordinators do not always understand travel time and distance (as they go off of Google maps and you will only be paid for what Google maps says for time and km) and you have to really put your foot down sometimes when they want you all over the map spending 70% of your day driving and making less money. The nursing staff are allowed to negotiate their wages and PSW staff are not. I highly enjoyed my management in the local office and I was trained by very knowledgeable and great staff in the field. I highly enjoyed what I did here, the pay was just not worth it (which was very sad) and the benefits cost a FORTUNE with this company.  Schedules are very flexible as long as you communicate with everyone. 
Obviously with home care you run into situations where individuals do not have proper equipment or environments for their care which can make providing care unsafe and difficult at times. Always improvise and do your best. 

Management deals with the higher ups breathing down their necks a lot and so that frustration trickles down to the poor people breaking their backs to keep this place in business. I absolutely loved my clients and developed very strong bonds with them. I was very well liked by clients and received an overwhelming amount of praise from them and their families in regards to the quality of my work. I was with Saint Elizabeth for almost 2 years and received that positive feedback maybe twice from management. What I did receive on a fairly regular basis from the office was hostility for things that were not my fault, ie scheduling issues I would call or email about that did not get corrected and so visits were missed or I was late for. Or once I called in sick and they did not remove the clients from my schedule and a supervisor I was not working under called and actually yelled at me asking why I didn't tell a supervisor I was not coming in. My response was that usually they transfer me to a supervisor after I speak with schedule coordinator but this coordinator did not transfer me after we were done speaking but that I assumed that they had removed the clients because THAT is their job when they talk to someone who says they are not well enough to work their scheduled shift. 
The job itself is very rewarding just be prepared to stand up for yourself often as you will be walked all over if you don't and be prepared to not feel appreciated by the company. My favourite part of this job was spending time with the clients and their families and the rare times I'd actually get to talk to my co-workers because they were all pretty awesome.

This place is not professional at all. When I was hired, I barely had any communication with my supervisors because 4 of them quit after each other. You would receive so many emails for staffing needs but not a thing supervisors. The supervisor I did get to know as very kind and helpful but was clearly burnout.

One of my co-workers in the office says its a zoo in there, and everyone is preoccupied with just covering their own butts, so no one take accountability or blame the front line.

If they weren't so busy putting out scheduling fires, they could supporting us at the front line where it's needed.

In fact, I learned my lesson trying to help them... They ask, you want to help, then you do then they take advantage of you and overbook when you said I can help with one client! Some coordinators even avoid you or schedule you less if you don't help! 

That is unprofessional! And theres little trust - for example, my preceptor warned me to "be careful" with people in the office. I know the supervisors are overworked too, so it really is the upper management whos doing a poor job helping them do their job too. 

The culture here seems very fend for yourself. No one really talks to each other on my team - I don't even know their names! And senior staff who's vocal during team meetings are also fed up with the organization but won't quit because they've been here too long! Red flag! I got out as soon as I could!

One very big pro are the clients. Community nursing is very special becuase you work in the home, seeing people in their own environment. They are so grateful for you support and they show it in many rewarding ways.

If you are an in box thinker great work environment. Leadership very much status quo. The fact that non medical people are in charge of medical decisions is worrisome and their insight or lack there of does not foster nurse empowerment. Turn over is huge! Unfortunate that the higher ups do not get that turnover costs money. Tons of silos with very little sharing across organization. 
Each office is set up with ‘mini Ceo’ so what happens in one part of the province is different than another office…leads to very different treatment/expectations for employees. Payment is based on visits made no base salary…appeals to lowest common denominator of patient care. Just in and out don’t use your critical thinking because you will not get paid. 
Leadership may have book knowledge but lacks insight into care, since many have not provided bedside care. Micromanagement is predominant.
Huge staff turnover in management and at the bedside. Of course the dirty laundry is not exposed in the interview process but come on people … why do so many move or leave the company???!!!!
If too many waves made will transfer you or help you find the door. Beware that even if people are staying in the company does not mean that they are doing well.
Redundancy of services. Tons of management…would like to see of those huge pay cheques trickle down to the front line people…


I joined the company when it just opened a new office and had several new supervisors promoted so it was hectic and very disorganized. I feel that the orientation was severely lacking. I didn't get the promised two weeks of orientation, all they did was go over a couple of the modules that we were already assigned to complete independently and did not cover other important topics such as how to report to the lhin, etc. Everything was pushed onto the preceptors to show us but really, when they're scheduled a full day of clients already how much time can they spend training a new hire on administrative stuff that should have been covered during the classroom orientation?

There isn't much of a work life balance. If you are marked available for a particular day, they expect you to be available for the whole day and will regularly add more clients to your schedule without informing you. Easily go beyond 12 hours on the road just to get to everyone because you are not allowed to decline new clients and the coordinators don't care if you need to get home or have other appointments. They brag about how you can create your own schedule and be flexible in your timing but no, not really. A lot of clients are timed visits, which means they need the service at a particular time so you will find yourself driving from one edge of the city to the other with no breathing space.

I was hired near the beginning of the pandemic, when an accelerated orientation process had been initiated to expedite onboarding for new temporary hires ('regular orientation' was re-established soon after). Despite that, my direct supervisor was incredibly supportive and provided invaluable feedback when I asked for it. The management team in general were similarly supportive and effective.

My hourly compensation was very good but as a temporary part time employee, I wasn't offered benefits. Also, given my temporary status, I didn't expect a high degree of job security. My work contract wasn't renewed / extended because the need wasn't there, but management were transparent about it from day one.

I thoroughly enjoyed working for SE Health. As a former agency RN who (at the time of hire) had close to 3 years' experience working at ~10 similar facilities (owned by several competing companies), the facility I worked at was one of the best. Policies were up to date and easily retrievable. The computer charting software they had invested in (PointClickCare) was efficient and effective at facilitating a high degree of information sharing while maintaining confidentiality, although paper MARs instead of eMARs were still being used. 

Staff were generally friendly, collaborative and committed to excellence and it was apparent from interactions I had with residents that they were receiving excellent care and felt safe. 

My most rewarding part of the position I held as a Saint Elizabeth Foundation Event Coordinator was meeting and connecting with new and interesting people and forming connections, who would in turn agree to be a part of support our companies fundraising goals. 
In this position, I organized and executed 2 successful corporate golf tournaments that raised over $50,000 where the proceeds were proudly donated to a local organization that is in the process of building a new building for Hospice for Kingston and area residents. 
I was very dedicated to the Saint Elizabeth Foundation motto of "Sharing Hope and Happiness" through various fundraising activities and events that supported many local charities and provided much needed supplies for individuals in need.  
I was proud to bring awareness to Saint Elizabeth Healthcare and the Foundation through building and creating a lighted Christmas float that I proudly displayed and walked along side of with other employees in many local Christmas parades. 

The most rewarding part as a Saint Elizabeth Customer Service Representative was being a part of a committed team of dedicated colleagues that worked well together and under deadlines to ensure the clients needs were met that needed various health care services each and every day.
