Congratulations, you've been newly hired for the position of Hockey Video Annotator. As a seasonal contractor here's what you can expect:

-Very inflexible scheduling, you can expect to work full-time one year then part-time the next without warning. You can also expect to be refused PTO during Holidays. You get 2 days off and 2 sick days for the entire season. Attendance issues such as being late (you are considered late 2 minutes into your shift) or shift cancellations that remain within policy limits will still hurt your standing with management who will overlook you for a promotion or bonus, may not offer you a contract next year, or simply dismiss you at the drop of a hat. 

-Expect burnout-inducing pressure from the out of touch upper management big-wigs who know next to nothing about your job or professional sports in general and only care about the bottom line. Rest assured, they are sticklers for writing up pink slips and escalating supplementary discipline the moment you step out of line.

-The UI you'll be working with is obsolete, has badly needed several updates for years, and is neither work-friendly nor ergonomic. Think correctly clicking a plethora of frustratingly tiny icons in small boxes at the bottom of your screen over 600 times in under 40 minutes per hour. And you will be clicking incorrect buttons, believe me. Also, controls and hot-keys aren't even customizable. Any suggestions you make will pile up in a support ticket graveyard. If they do implement your idea you will get no credit for it anyway. 
On second thought, you probably don't want to improve anything that would make work easier and more efficient for everybody, quite ironically. 

Keep in mind: you're actually what we call a mechanical Turk, filling in while the AI learns to do your job, at which point you'll probably be back in the unemployment line.

-Middle management (Team Leads) are overworked and constantly caught between a rock and hard place. For their trouble, they are compensated with minimal benefits and job security with pay raises about equal to the current rate of inflation (same goes for you, so you better appreciate that 50 cent raise next year). If you stick around long enough you will learn that TLs work 10 times harder and better than you under much more stressful conditions. Be nice to them. If you're good at your job you'll get more work on your desk at first but eventually you might be offered this prestigious position!

-Poor advancement opportunities, at your position you are first and foremost a bottom-feeder and will be kept in the dark about the company's plans, direction, decision-making and financial matters. Enjoy the opaque work-culture and lack of communication between departments and even your own co-workers - which has been exacerbated by the new WFH policy due to the pandemic. I've actually only spoken to one or 2 devs/programmers in 3 years and that's when we had an actual office to speak of.

-Very high turnover rate. The average career for a VA is about 2-3 years, maybe 5 to 7 if you enjoy it or are otherwise masochistic. The only competent Head of Training and Development quit years ago and the best General Manager transferred to another division. To put it politely, their many replacements have been lacking.

The constantly revolving door and dismal vetting by HR during interviews, combined with a shortage in candidates willing to accept morose working conditions ultimately means you will be dealing with replacement-level hires who aren't adequately prepared for almost half the season. To be fair, the training can be hard to grasp in a short 3 month crash course. What's more, some of your work has been outsourced to countries where a masterful command of the English language isn't their top priority I'd say.

-Finally, I couldn't go without mentioning the "Catch-22" bonus structure that would make even Kafka blush. 

As a VA, your performance is dependent on making turnaround times and getting high quality scores. However, the faster you work generally, the worse your quality score will since you cannot possibly catch every detail and annotate them at the correct frame and location. Also, the grading system is subjective and varies from one reviewer to the next. You may find yourself wanting to appeal your result but are only allocated 30 minutes to do so. Good luck.
 
Furthermore, in live game settings, you are expected to complete your work 5 minutes after the end of each period: no ifs, no buts. 
The catch? The duration of a period is completely at the whims of the amount of game stoppages (i.e. length and frequency of commercial breaks, whistles/face-offs, coach timeouts/challenges, goal reviews, glass and breakage, serious injuries, fighting and other penalties, and so on)! Any single period can vary from 28 to 50+ minutes. 

Of course, management has never mitigated this absurd situation and are content with announcing your failure at making turnaround time because your game had no whistles in the final 8 minutes and your team of 6 had 4 new hires who still struggle with analysis. Meanwhile another team of veterans whose game featured a bench clearing brawl were done their work before the end of the period. 

Where do I begin. What a terrible place to work. Management is one of the most incompetent group of people I have ever worked for, especially after the previous manager is no longer with the company. He was the only thing holding the company together for success. The new manager is a complete imbecile with no personal or communication skills, which are pretty essential qualities for a manager.

If you like hockey, and actually LIKE to watch hockey, this is not the job for you, You will be scheduled starting usually late afternoon into the evening, frequently util 2AM. So there is absolutely no social life for you at this job, and forget watching the sport you love, which is what probably drove you to apply here in the first place. You will never see any of your friends, family, or even have the proper time to run errands unless you want to wake up 5 hours before your shift even starts just to be able to do some grocery shopping.

This company does not care about it's employees one bit. All they care about is trying to meet deadlines, which they NEVER do, and they do not care about the quality of the work. Half the time you are there you are correcting the mistakes of all the incompetent idiots they hired after getting rid of all the eventors who actually knew the sport and were good at the job. The entire day is a waste of time. They are way more concerned about speed over quality and correct work. And if you bring that up to them they will absolutely rip you a new one and tell you that it isn't your place to even be bringing it up in the first place.

There are absolutely no benefits working here, you get an hourly rate, but sometimes you don't get as much hours as other people as it is a contract job. Even if you are amazing at the job, if you are not there 50 hours a week sucking up to the management taking no breaks they will probably terminate your contract in the summer. There is the main office where all the data entry employees work, and ugly bare office crammed with not enough seats for all the people they schedule at the same time, and these employees are lucky enough to only get free coffee. Meanwhile the head office employees so to speak, all actually have benefits and are offered meals and other snacks at all times. The staff was so overbooked one day some of the lower level employees had to go work in the head office area, and were told that since we do not work in that part of the office we were not allowed to eat any of the free snacks that were around. Lovely

Not to mention they will promote the laziest and least hard working employees who do not even care about the job. Some of the newest promotions have gone to new people, or people who are not even good at the job and do not have a good knowledge of hockey. Instead of firing them, since they are not good at the current task, THEY PROMOTE THEM. Pretty insulting to the people who know what they are doing and have been overworked for years working at this company.

Oh, and if you ever need time off for ANY reason including medical, you will be scrutinized. They will absolutely harass you for any type of documentation, and if you do not provide any proof or a good reason why you were not there, even leaving early from being very ill, you will lose substantial compensation in form of your bonus. The management cares more about attendance more than anything over quality of work. They do not care if someone died, or if you were in the hospital. All they care about is a seat to fill, and your contract will certainly be terminated if you miss more than a couple days without proper proof.

Another point is that they do not follow the law at all in accordance to breaks. BY LAW it is mandatory to give an employee a 30 min break for ever 5 hours worked and you bet they make you work more than 10 hours at a time without telling you. Sudden last minute changes to your day such as sticking you on one live game since so many people cancel their shift from being over worked and not wanting to work un 2AM, after you were already just on another life game, which means for minimum 6 hours straight you will not have a single break. You do not have time between periods to do anything either as you are doing the quality assurance of the game you have been working on, which is always awful and time consuming since all the new people who have been hired are not good at the job so your time between periods to relax and MAYBE eat something from the cafe downstairs (if it's even open at that time) is impossible as there are SO MANY errors to fix.

Time off is also impossible. Unless you ask about two months in advance for ONE specific day off, it will be denied. They like to put out their horrific schedule way in advance but half the time they do not post it but tell you it is already made in their system so they cannot change it as it is impossible to schedule everyone needed for the time being since half the people cancel. You will always work weekends, and are allowed 2 weekend days off per month, if lucky and ask way ahead of time. More than that is forbidden. Yet the head office employees are on a nice daytime Monday-Friday and paid holidays off schedule, while employees in the main office work frequently on holidays without abiding by the law off either working 32 hours a specific week or having that specific holiday a paid off holiday.

I would not recommend anyone to apply here unless you want to go back in time in and basically become a slave.

If you want to work for a company where job performance will actually make your life harder this is the place to be. Management takes advantage of better performing employees by locking them into the 6-2AM shift, and make absolutely no exceptions to this. You can kiss your social life goodbye because they couldn’t care less about you as an individual. School, personal problems and even deaths in the family come under scrutiny from HR and scheduling, as they well harass you for proof, no matter the personal turmoil unfolding in your life. Not only is there no salary premium for evening hours, the new “block system” that the new management team configured has created a chokehold on workflow, creating situations where you will be forced to work 90% of your shift before seeing a break, because there aren’t enough staff left in the office after the few lucky people who got into the day block leave for the day. It is common practice to create deadlines such that you will be forced to work without a break from 6PM-1AM, then they will force you to stay in the office till 2AM for your “break”.
The company is understaffed because the new management decided to terminate the contracts of over half their employees from the previous season. These all had almost nothing to do with their performance, but their attendance record, in accordance to the absolutely insane attendance rules that govern the office. The result? The office is understaffed and under experienced, senior staff is constantly being pushed to the brink to hit deadlines, because they are basically the only people keeping the work afloat at this point. Not only that, eventors get blamed for the company’s difficulty to hit deadlines, their bonuses are revoked arbitrarily, regardless of their personal performance because of “company goals". Their is a huge lack of employees, yet scheduling still insists on scheduling people to work from 6-2AM even if the office is completely empty during the day. The loss of the previous office manager is probably one of the worst things that could have ever happened to this place, as the new manager has absolutely no idea how the office dynamic works, and insists to impose work protocols that do nothing but slow everything down. It is really a shame because this used to be an amazing place to work, and the people that work here are wonderful, but the few bad apples in management have ruined everything.

This was an interesting place to work considering how video and analytics keeps growing in hockey. There really is not that much AI involved but it must be pretty obvious there is a human element to this job with all the hiring that goes on for eventing positions. 

I worked here for 2 seasons and I really saw the dramatic shift in the company culture. I will not be returning to Sportlogiq after we had our state of the union video call this week. Its great that the company is going to start offering eventors benefits and sick days (never had these before) however with schedule restrictions pretty tight before, there is no way the schedule will be easier to manage with the company giving the eventors benefits.

As I heard from others, there really are two types of employee tiers. There are the 5th floor people who are the data analytics team, marketing, developers, etc. Then there are the 4th floor people which are the people who literally make the company go. We work on the games, all night, on weekends, no holiday break, working on provincial holidays. Thats fine to an extent because the job requires that but we get no respect from anyone upstairs. They fail to realize that if we dont do our job, they cannot do theirs. All we wanted was respect and to be treated better.

The best part about this place is the people you work directly with because they go through the same headaches as you. If I understood our meeting, they are removing the Learning and Development department. How are we going to know our performance without this department? It is interesting to see that they are exporting work outside of North America, I wonder how that is going to go.

Management are full of YES MEN and dont support you. All they do is brown nose up to their director and keep their jobs safe.

I did enjoy my time there, working on the games and working with cool people. It was just getting no respect, the schedule headache and management not supporting me that makes my decision not to come back.

Sportlogiq used to be an amazing place to work at for students, young adults and sports fans, but with the start of the 2019-2020 hockey season came changes to management and company policies, none of which have proven to be beneficial to the common worker.
The mere concept of flexible scheduling was thrown out the window when shift blocks were implemented. Those lucky enough to work the morning block only have to sacrifice their weekends, while those who end up with the 6PM-2AM block see their entire life outside of obliterated, making a mockery of the "work-life balance (really)" advertised on the Why Join Us tab of the company. 
Management made the decision to wipe out half of the senior workforce during the offseason and replace them with new hires. They chose to hire quantity rather than quality, then were left puzzled when only a quarter of trainees were capable of performing to a satisfactory level. The workforce, approximately the same size as the year prior, only with less experience, is no longer able to meet deadlines as demand for the company's product increases. Rather than accept responsibility for their short-sighted actions, management chooses to deflect the blame onto the understaffed workforce, completely oblivious to the extra work senior employees are being forced to put it to make up for the absence of experience.
Moving up in the company is no easy feat. Management seems intent on dredging up anything they can from seasons past to keep experienced, well liked, hard working employees out of leadership roles, instead opting for new trainees who haven't worked long enough to run afoul of the laughably strict attendance policy.
Until there is a change in management, I'd recommend to stay away from Sportlogiq, as the slightly better than average pay is not worth the mental and emotional stress.

SPORTLOGiQ claims to be a modern work environment with flexible hours, which is true for about 10% of the employees. The rest are overworked, understaffed and forced to work every single weekend day as well as most tuesday and thursday nights until 2 AM. There is no leniency with management, and promotions are given to those who work the most hours in a year, your qualifications mean nothing. What I will say is that the working culture is fun. You have great coworkers who are in the same position as you and the work isnt especially hard, just the long hours with nothing but grey walls to look at gets unbearable at times. If youre in the upper echelon of employees, you get food, drinks, flexible hours and an awesome work environment on the top floor. If you are not, you get grey walls, long hours with no flexibility, and sit on a bottom level floor with hundreds of other disgruntled employees. HR essentially pushes you under the rug when you have a concern, and management is people who essentially just worked more than other people and have little to no qualifications to be in the positions that they're in. Like I said, the ones who work with you are great - there are great employees at the company. However, management and owners are clueless about their staff and have created a divide between the common worker and the privileged upper-tier worker and it does not take long for the place to drain you. If you are applying for a top tier position, I highly recommend working here as it seems like an awesome place to work. If you are applying for a regular position, although it seems super cool to work in sports and data, it will quickly drain you and make you realize that the workload and inflexibility is not worth it - you can make the same money elsewhere with much better hours and working conditions.

Worked here during the 2019-20 NHL season right up until the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Worked on the live eventing team in the fall, then moved to grunt work (mostly finishing the eventing of random, partially completed junior and minor league hockey games) when a new wave of employees finished their training.  The way that this company threw new employees to the wolves constantly without any serious post-training support was hilarious—but it created cliques fast.  Speed was the only criteria that could keep you in the live eventing pool—so quality of work was always secondary—plus the live eventors knew that the grunt workers would clean up their mess in post pproduction anyways, which somehow senior management could not grasp was happening.  The worst part was, after finally getting somewhat good at my job (no thanks to any training whatsoever—purely based on the reps I was getting while learning on the job), the pandemic hits and hundreds of eventors are immediately laid off and left in the dark for months about what will happen to us when the NHL resumed play.  In august 2020—nearly 6 months after work stopped and NHL play was ready to resume—I was informed that my job was outsourced to the Ukraine and I would not be returning to Sportlogiq.  So much for giving up every single weekend and working ungodly hours for an entire regular season only to be rewarded with my job being outsourced to the first third world country they could find that understood hockey.

The company is divided in multiple offices - the main office with the salaried employees, and the "Data Entry" Office with hundreds of employees working for an hourly wage.

The company claims it tracks the analytics using AI when in reality it's done by hundreds of employees working in the Data Entry office.

Working in Data Entry at this company means you'll work terrible hours, with strict attendance guidelines, no benefits and no potential for career advancement - as you'll be using the company's special data application and not a real world application like Excel.

The Data Entry office runs on quantity over quality. Over the years, hundreds of employees have come and gone because of these work conditions. This employee turnover forces the Senior employees to train, and work with new hires constantly - making it harder to reach deadlines and for the company to perform optimally.

Management resolves everything in black and white. Regardless of your question or request - whatever is in your contract is the response you'll get from them.

The biggest pros about this job are:
- It's very easy to get hired (expect to work the night shift!)
- Pizza parties once every few months.
- With hundreds of employees, you're bound to meet some cool people.

Management is clueless about how the actual job works, certain on floor people in the company who have been there for years deserve to be way higher up in the company hierarchy because they actually seem to know how the job works and actually care about running things smoothly. Mission directives from higherups are too focused on unrealistic rates of productivity rather than building everyone up as a team and keeping employees happy, which speaks to the high rate of turnover for people on floor. Overall, the company was too concerned over turning everyone into worker drones who wouldn't complain and would hire basically anybody as so many people were quitting. Nothing was really learned, as they run on their own software, and generally the upper management seemed unprepared for so many things and put the blame on to the people who do all the work.

I worked there as a hockey data entry specialist for about a year. The pay was pretty good for a student who only worked part time. However, as someone who worked there a year and wanted to be promoted to a higher up position, it was nearly impossible honestly despite having a really good record. 

The job itself was pretty casual. It got a little stressful when you have to even live games, but luckily the time flew when you evented live games so that was a plus. But working 8 hours a day just recording data can get very tedious and annoying, which is when the higher-ups can become really annoying and not understanding whatsoever. Plus the bonuses were at times hard to achieve so sometimes you don't feel the need to push yourself.
