The Resident Advisor (RA) job required approximately 20-30 hours of work per month throughout the school year. The work would involve: weekly meetings, floor meetings, one-on-one meetings with our supervisor, creating passive boards, planning and hosting events, and working night shifts keeping residence in order. 

Some days are easier than others. It all depends on what trouble the students are up to. Some students are well behaved, others hide in their rooms away from the party-people. And there is also the occasional student with a mental breakdown and other growing issues. Friends, family, and roommates can cause more stress on top of school deadlines and expectations. As an RA, I was responsible for being a role model and providing a voice or a listening ear for anyone who needed it. I would have to find ways to help students deal with stress, suicide prevention, sickness, and any other issue I could be of assistance. 

I feel like it might be inappropriate to talk about the hardest part of the job, for the sake of any students who were traumatized by the event. 

I most enjoyable part of the job was working with all the other RA's. I had the pleasure to work with a great group of people and had a fantastic supervisor which made the year that much better.

Terrible communication amongst all campuses.  Continuous turnover of positions and no one communicates who does what in any jobs so you never know who to ask about anything.  Too heavy in management.  Not enough support staff and they are overworked - constantly being expected to work above their pay grade and overtime.  Kingston is “Emerald City” but Cornwall and Brockville campuses in the shadows.  Definitely NOT Student First.  Definitely NOT Belonging Inclusivity or Equality here for staff.  Parking costs for staff is exorbitant.  Security thinks it’s funny they have students cars towed when they are already struggling to succeed.  International students brought in as cash cows.  Overall for an educational institution they lack significant organizational skills, professionalism and communication skills. 

Working as an online course facilitator at St. Lawrence College has been a rewarding experience. A typical day involves engaging with students on’ine, supporting their learning, and guiding meaningful discussions. I’ve learned how to adapt my facilitation style to different learning needs, which has strengthened my communication and leadership skills. Management has been supportive and approachable, providing clear guidance when needed. The workplace culture is collaborative and student-focused, which creates a positive environment. The most enjoyable part is seeing students gain confidence and apply what they’ve learned—it’s very fulfilling to witness their progress. 

A typical day on the job includes meetings with faculty and other employers. We are constantly coming up with new ideas on how to get students more engaged in the school as well as preparing them for what comes after graduation. I have learned a variety of skills over the years and feel like I have become a completely different person. The culture is great everyone is enthusiastic and filled with energy as well as welcoming. The most enjoyable part of the job is that the supervisors are very flexible with the hours therefore we can create our own schedules and do not necessarily have to work at the college. I also have majority of the control over my projects. If I come up with a project idea my boss will tell me to go for it and try it out.

A typical day at work included tutoring younger students in subjects such as pharmacology, medical traumatic emergencies, anatomy and physiology,patient care as well as for physical and practical testing. I was responsible for medical supply inventory and preparing equipment for scenario testings. I ran the night labs with one other employee or by myself in most cases. This job opportunity allowed me to continuously learn new up to date medical and patient care techniques, which greatly helped me during my paramedic preceptorship.

Corporate culture.  Very supportive management and administration.  Flexible teaching hours,

uncertainty in the courses being offered to teach from semester to semester.

Very positive, cooperative and energetic work environment.throughout the entire college.

Arrive 15 minutes early to teach courses.

Poor management. Little job security for most employees . Good caring coworkers who succeed in spite of the organisation, not because of it. Unrealistic expectations and definitely don't be good at your job- you will have to do everyone else's- including your manager's. No support. No resources for doing your job properly. High turn over and burn out rate. "Students first" only applies to Kingston Campus.

I generally controlled when and where I would meet people to tutor them. I worked as much as I could with the students in order to aid them in the program.
The most important thing I learned was to multitask between class, social life and work commitment.
The hardest part of the job was how short it lasted, which was half a semester of school. I also did not get that many tutees, and could not work my full hours each week.
The most enjoyable part of the job was working with people and seeing them improve and further their learning.

I have worked at St Lawrence College for 14 years. The College has been life changing for me in many positive ways. it has allowed me to have a family 2 children and purchase a home. unfortunately. I am at the top of the scale and cannot move any further. this is why I am looking for a more suitable job that supports my financial needs as well as room for growth and development.

Professional support is fantastic. 

Typical day is in the classroom teaching, using a variety of methods- powerpoint, reading, hands-on activities, assessing materials brought in. 

Hardest part is trying to find the classroom, as it changes often due to construction and over-crowding. 

Would love to see program brought to other cities as well.
