The assistant manager causes a lot of confusion and disorganization which you somehow will get blamed for.

They don't mention during the interview stage that you will be put in dangerous situations Not limited to Irate+Intoxicated+Armed+Violent customers. 

Are SEVERELY understaffed but are cutting our hours

The shipping manager and key holder are wonderful but the upper management are very petty and rude

they are not respectful when they speak with employees and make people not want to work there 

They aren't good leaders and blame employees when things go wrong

There's also asbestos all around the store (I found out like 6 months after working here, pretty sure they're supposed to let you know on the first day) The building is in a horrible state 

upper management do not respect boundaries and will call your emergency contact for minor issues

OFF 5th is a pretty chill place to work and they are pretty good at working with your schedule for the most part. Biggest issue is that for students they won't let you book off a single day in the Christmas season so if you have exams good luck. They give a good amount of breaks and have pretty good hours so depending on your department you can get a good amount of time in. Biggest issue is the management tends to be really aggressive and push you a lot to do whatever they want in terms of taking extra shifts and they are really rude when it comes to needing time off be it for sick days or family emergencies. Or management is completely useless and you need to fend for yourself 

I worked at OFF 5th for 5 months. the manager was doesn't do anything and just sits in his office all day. assistant manager was amazing and actually trained me and helped me with tasks. manager would just come around and criticize and make godawful jokes. department supervisors do way more work than they're paid for and have little opportunity to advance. the discount was nice but you need to buy things on a company credit card with $100 limit. inventory nights were long and hard and the food they supplied was bad but paid well. scheduling is flexible especially for a student. overall I would recommend working here as a part-time job

More responsibilities were placed on some more than others, and it seemed there was a divide as management picked "favourites." It was a chill place to work overall, but what made it stressful was feeling undervalued and simply not enough. This store is notorious for bad reviews and poor customer service, however if you are committed to the customers and helping others, it is a positive and enjoyable experience trying to help people find what they are looking for, or finding alternatives that work for them. You learn a lot of problem solving skills and you learn to multi-task in a big store with lots to do.

The store was a great at first experience. The managers of the direct store were super friendly and doing their best to help everyone out. Usually sacrificing lunch time to make sure everything is running smoothly. However, the higher ups continues to cut budgets but kept raising work load and expectations which resulted in many employees leaving and hard workers not seeing any chance for pay raise or promotions. Not the fault of store managers. The general expectations of how well the store would do were too high and as a result came crashing down.

Felt like they were making it up as you were going along.  Not really sure how to handle the changing market around clothing retail and had a hard time figuring out the Canadian market initially.  However, great training with training courses and constant ability to improve yourself if you want.  Also, lots of opportunity due to large number divisions owned by HBC, however that can also make it hard to stand out.  To be successful, you need to be organized and have great merchandising skills as they give you basic rules but otherwise you are basically free to do what you think best and how good you are is largely subjective.

Brainless work. Staff was accommodating for the most part. Key holders were all nice, willing to work with you and teach you things or give you some tasks to break up the day. Management was average. HIGH turn over. Most are students called in sick or were late on a daily basis. A very small amount of core staff. Most days it seemed like a task for other employees just to say hi to you when walking onto the sales floor at the beginning of your shift. Seemed like the manager had to overcompensate on staff friendliness. 

The first 2 years I worked there the management was great but when all the managers got switched to different locations it just went all downhill from there. The job itself was easy but I knew a lot of people who wanted to advance and has worked there for years and were never able to. I mostly enjoyed my coworkers but after we kept getting bad manager after bad manager everyone quit.Not only that but there was a lot of favoritism going on.

As a cashier at point of sale, my daily tasks included assisting customer's at point of sale, providing opinions on their purchases when asked, marketing the company credit card, answering phone calls, having up to date knowledge of the inventory (fashion) and maintaining a clean work space.
However, the store was very unclean, possibly due to is being new renovated and it made it an unhealthy and uncomfortable work environment. I left when it took a toll on my health.

What is the best part of working at the company?
None! This company verbally and mentally abused you.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The SM and HR. Had no support and would be falsely accused of staff issues the SM caused.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very very stressful m. Would be threatened by the SM.

No words can express my thoughts.
