a typical day at work would be moving the rig onto a new work site where we would setup all the buildings and stand the derrick then prepare mud system and surface bottom hole assembly to drill surface then pull out bha run casing and cement. Then prepare for nipple up where we would install the bop which is our blowout preventer. Once installed we would run in intermediate bha and drill out cement then continue drilling towards target depth. I have learned many mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical skills working with savanna drilling. The hardest part of the job would be working up stick alone when I would have to jack back or maneuver 8" drill collars that is when you learn most to use your ropes both collar rope on side and pull back rope to move the very heavy drill collars. The most enjoyable part of the day would be maintaining my mud system, learning drilling controls and different downhole reactions while drilling into different formations.

My time at Savannah Drilling was very rewarding, they have an excellent life work balance so you can enjoy some time off with family and if you have a problem with with something out on the rigs, no problem they will help you solve it step by step. The pay is industry standard which is excellent, and chances for advancement are many. Very very enjoyable company to work for and would love to work for them again. A very very highly recommended company, if you're coming to Alberta and you want to work in the oil patch, either as a seasoned roughneck, or as a beginner starting out, this is definitely one recommended company.

Savanna has the legendary benefits package that start immediately upon start date. They also cover all your expenses and courses. Most of their rigs are state of the art and user friendly but you still can't escape hard work because most of their crews are green and when something breaks down suck as the hydraulic pipe spinner or air slips no one knows how to fix it quickly and efficiently with out causing down time making an easy decision for the Driller and a harder shift, but 9 times out of 10 the floor hands appreciate the hard work.

I have been with Savanna for just about 3 years now and have been all over Alberta and Saskatchewan. Finally got on a steady rig but lately we have been shutting down and firing back up. I am a new father and my wife is not working so it puts that much more pressure on myself to keep us afloat. I do not mind jumping around from rig to rig however I am to the point where I want a steady schedule and Savanna can not provide me with a guarantee so I am going to start looking for another opportunity and give someone else my very high drive for success and work ethic.

Working there was good. We got to leave early most Fridays and got an arrangement with the manager to come in later than everybody else. However there is no constant flow of work and you are left doing nothing most of the time. The new owners (Total) cannot be trusted. If you fell that they will get ride of you follow your gut feeling and pack up. Also the insurance company they use is very bad. They cover little and will go back and forth with you over several months before paying up.

Morning reports. Do a pre shift safety meeting with the crews. Do a walk around the rig to make sure things are running good. Help where needed and supervise and train new hands.
How to work with others and be a team player. How to deal with all the different personalities.
management is mostly supportive and easy to deal with.
The hardest part of the job is dealing with all the different personalities and when injuries acure . The best part of the job is  working with people from all over Canada and all the different personalities.

I Really Enjoyed working At Savanna , Learned a lot and met and worked with a lot of great people. As Receptionist you become everyones secretary, so have , done there visa reports , expenses, time sheets ect. With the ups And downs of the oil industry the layoffs are the hardest part , you loose some of your work family. I am a people person so love all the interactions you get with everyone in the office.

Was an awesome company when I started in 2004. Slowly deteriorated into the worst run drilling company in Canada. The management is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. They gutted the  benefits program and they cancel it the second the rig isn't working. The constant lies about when the next job will be is out of hand. What they pay to do that job is not worth it.

This is probably one of the best companies I’ve ever worked for great pay and great benefits the only reason I left is because I have two daughters back east it’s hard to have that time back with them but a great place to work and learn new things I started as a rough neck and moved up to a stud roughneck and have to say i miss my crew I was on. 

Its the rigs work when you can as long as you can because if you dont want to work they wont call, its the patch take it or leave it my rig was awesome great crews its a family away from a family, work hard and youll have no problems 

The down side is if you dont have your name in with other rigs the office will just call who they like so get your name out there work more then you have to so that you can have work when you need it simple as that
