What is the best part of working at the company?
Good: Good structure - dedicated charge nurse + clerk handle discharge planning and the MDs are readily available and communicate with the patients and family members easily.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Bad: Not very clean + lots of wasted items, rooms are cramped and equipment is often broken. Nurses don't seem to be respected at all and don't participate in bullet rounds. Patients families seem to be updated on the plan before the nurses are. Rather than feeling like a team member, you feel like you're supposed to be a foot solider carrying out orders which, in the case that something goes wrong would leave you in the lerch and you'd be the scapegoat. Also the patients are very heavy and often unstable patients that would be dealt with in the ICU are being dealt with on the floor, as escalation seems poor as well . Additionally patients come up from the ED without being stablized properly. Also maybe this is just my unit but may long time nurses fail to give a thourough report and leave out critical information (I suppose because of the lack of expectation around critical thinking) 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Again, it feels like nurses are at the bottom of the totem pole and that the other team members are ready to throw the nurses under the bus.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Get on the unit, and it doesn't look or smell all that good, nurses are writing report to be passed on paper rather than giving a verbal report. The WOWs are not clean or organized. Patient rooms are cluttered with supplies from god knows when. The rovers are dead and or there's not enough for all of the staff.

Management says that they're there to help but cares not one bit of the staff and the fact that they're drowning of high patient load. Medicine units are a mess because most if not all nurses back stab and talk behind each others backs. Senior nurses are evidently too tired and over their jobs and talk badly about everybody. You'd think they're nice to you one day, and report you to management the next. The manager picks favourites and allows certain things slide to nurses that they like and reprimand other nurses for. Management, HR, and union rep clearly are not for the employees' best interest as they often blame staff for being overwhelmed and tired when there's high turnover and staff constantly calling in sick due to high stress of not having enough staff or help on the unit. The manager constantly "schools" new nurses while say nothing to senior nurses that do the same, if not worse, incidents regarding patient care. Management is also very disorganized but tries to make it seem like they know what they're doing by using eloquent language with nothing to show for and subsequently blame staff for not doing something that's supposed to be the manager's job. Overall very toxic with a scoop of egotistic healthcare "professionals". If you're a new nurse looking for experience, apply to NRT positions, that way, you can get your skills and not be tied down to the nursing politics in the units.

Worked here for 4+ years as a RPN with their nursing resource team. 
We (the NRT nurses) were constantly put on units that were short staffed and would always get the heavier assignments and this was pre-COVID. Things only got worse as COVID hit and we were always placed with the COVID positive patients. 
As an RPN at these hospitals you will be doing the same assignments as an RNs on the medical units! It literally has to take you speaking up and complaining to the charge nurse before they think about changing it! On multiple occasions I’ve been given assignments where my patient wasn’t  in the best shape at the start of the shift and was either critical or borderline, the nurse giving report in transfer of care would ask if I was an RN and I would reply “no” and they would literally look at me confused and say “this should be a RN Patient”, I would then assess the patient myself and bring this up to the charge nurse, who would then reply “just do what’s within your scope”…………. Seriously… while the RNs on the floor have stable up and about patients ….. ! I’ve even had to have a doctor ask for an RN for one of their patients because things weren’t looking so good. 
I’ve always been a nurse that loved learning new things and so willing to take on challenging assignments… but when this is the case non stop, shift after shift , it becomes exhausting! 
Pay doesn’t reflect the work that is actually done by RPNs, the starting isn’t bad… but man do you realize as the years pass that it is completely unfair as your wage increases by cents. 

It's guaranteed that you will work many hours beyond what you were hired for and you will NOT be compensated whether in lieu time or $ (you're told that you can take time in lieu but when you try to you're treated as though you're stealing time from the organization). Its a very demanding job with little credit for your accomplishments and one that could quickly lead to burnout and very limited work-life balance.

We used to have a secretary to help with clerical type duties and that was taken away so we spent countless hours every month doing clerical duties to prepare for staff orientation (this was unpaid time) so this was really frustrating as the secretarial support went to a couple senior people. I was asked to read information over the Christmas holiday to prepare for a meeting but the director didn't think that it was important to follow suit and read her material, relying on us to provide her with the information we read to prepare her for the meeting.

The best part of the job was working with the front line staff and patients.

It's a great place to work if you want to just get by, clock in 9-5 etc. NOT an ideal environment/culture for highly driven performance-oriented people, as incentives are non-existent except for VPs. Staff retention is an issue here.

Management has some seriously incompetent people who will shirk every responsibility possible, or just have terrible interpersonal, project management, and communication skills.

Very strong hierarchical culture and senior team enjoys keeping power. Old school management style around here. Lack of 360-feedback makes things worse. Current CEO is fantastic and like a hawk, unfortunately VPs and their directors' primary interests are making themselves look good.

Salary can be above-average per industry standard, depends on how you negotiate. Benefits are disgraceful; I guess the other reviewers must have worked in sweatshops!

The staff at the Scarborough General hospital in which i worked with had a very friendly and interesting staff. They were very vocal about their life while on their lunch breaks,providing interesting stories, and when it was time to get back to work, they did their work quickly and efficiently. 
They showed an amazing amount of experience in their work and were very precise about what was required and needed to complete each task(example:what medication to obtain, which amount needed, and where to send it to). 
There was also a variety of stations so you had a variety of tasks to do everyday,depending on what you were assigned to, that week. I think the hardest part of the job was to make sure you had your station's tasks completed before a certain time period, for certain stations, due to the requirements of the hospitals (medicaitons need to be sent up and restocked before a certain time to ensure the nurses had enough medication to distribute to the patients).

•	Effectively made unit dosage from bulk dosage form such as tablets, capsules, patches, narcotic pills, oral solutions and other topical dosage forms.
•	Had experienced Medical Reconciliation by Registered Tech. 
•	Prepared chemo products and assisted chemo technician by preparing labels and supplying materials using strict sterile chemo techniques.
•	Maintained storage and prepared IV products such as IV or SC preparations using strict sterile IV techniques.
•	Maintained narcotics inventory, ward stock at different nursing stations, night cupboard and emergency box supplies.
•	Good experience in preparing labels and outpatient dispensing with storage instruction to the patient in CKD department
•	Efficiently managed the robotic pharmacy dispensing system and good experience in dispensing different dosage forms of drugs in proper manner

What is the best part of working at the company?
Assist Urologist and Nurses when conducting UTI procedures in the operation room and to make sure all medical equipment is in place and ready.  Cleaning and changing bed linen.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
If you're a new employee colleague took advantage of you by working for them. I experienced demonic hatred at its worst from my colleagues during my first 4 months of employment

Work itself is pretty good but haters are extremely more than lovers

When I changed my work place my days were cool and calm

You will rarely get any days you request off and if you find another nurse who can work your shift it will get rejected for many reasons. One of the lowest paid RN positions in GTA for an Emergency Unit. Job Security is definitely there as everyone else on the unit wants to leave as soon as they start so you can snag a permanent position at any time. Management is the reason why every amazing nurse leaves the job. Also you will encounter what real "violence" against nurses feels like as the organization/management does not intervene for the protection of the nurses and security do not know how to handle angry patients/protect the staff.

I started at SHN as a new grad during the pandemic and found it a challenge in itself being new and unfamiliar to the role and lifestyle. I will say that the help and support from the many different nurses I had the opportunity to work with made it that much easier to learn, grow, and navigate my way to a more profficent and comfortable nurse. 

I am now 2 years into my profession and still working with SHN. I have been able to work under many different disciplines and have learned so much from when I first started.

The only downside, I would add, is the staffing shortage. However, this does currently appear to be a  provincial wide problem and not directly an SHN problem.
