This company was absolutely terrible. This review will probably taken down by the owner and if it doesn't... good. Here's the truth...

Yes, they make you run a student painting business and you have the job to do everything. It’s a full summer commitment and even commitment BEFORE Summer. In Jan-feb they start telling you to market and find jobs. They tell you that you need to reach about 20,000k in sales before you start for the summer. So you have to go door to door asking people if they want painting done. You paint, you market, you employ, you do everything. All the work. It’s hard. But it doesn’t even pay off. They don’t give you that much support. I spent almost a month on this one house painting and messed it all up and they didn’t care. I went $1200 over budget and that came out of my pocket. If you don’t perform to their “standards” they fire you and make you pay a $4000 fee from what I hear from those who quit AND its on the contract. It’s all on the contract and they screw you over. They know you’re a student and they make it so easy for you, you sign up in class, you don’t have to look for jobs, they are on campus for you, and all you need to do is take some time to meet them on campus and then they take advantage of you once you sign that contract saying you will work for them. They started off with 60-70 people and by the end of the summer there were only 20ish of us. I was forced to stay bc I did not way to pay that 4k fee. I worked for a region (not going to specify) and there were 6 branch operator and by the end everybody was gone. Everybody left because it was terrible. I lost a lot of money, it’s a lot of work, it doesn’t get paid off, you work day and night and no break and its terrible. They take 40% of your sales off the bat, and then the rest they give to you to figure out your pay for your workers you hire, the paint you bought, and the materials. On top of that, gas, food and other costs aren't taken into consideration. If you’re lucky, you would make some money. If not, you’re in the negatives and you’re screwed. I was losing so much money, I had to run the business myself AND be one of my OWN painters because i did not have the money to hire. So I didn’t have to pay my workers. So I ended up making 3k ALL summer working over hours running around everywhere. Then my painter got injured and you think they have insurance to cover it. They do, but the owner was like oh no you run your own business as a partnership to us so that comes out of your money. And he tried to scam me to pay what should be covered by the insurance company but thankfully I talked to the insurance company and said HE should be paying it. It’s all a scam. Ridiculous people taking advantage of young unexperienced students. They take advantage of students bc they know we don’t know anything. It’s bad. You might say it might be just this ONE company I worked for but I knocked on a guys door when marketing and he said he did this when he was young and they are all the same. Exploiting students. I have many many people who have agreed with me so I’m not the only one. They really can’t get away with this and I want to take the first steps to stop it. Their contract is shocking. They try to get you with the fine print. They told me during the interview to just “skim” it and in that contract were very important things like insurance stuff, and fees they randomly charge you and the $4000 dollar fee you have to pay if you leave or are not performing up to “standard”. All the words they use are tricky like performing up to "standard" and putting in the "work" etc. They charge you fees every payroll (2 weeks) that shouldn’t even be charged. They make you pay for team gathering events. They tell you oh we are going to go -------- with all the other operators, and then later charge you $50 on your account for that. It’s like they pull money from you left right and center. They make you pay for everything you can. And on top of that they take 40%. They don’t care if you go over budget. They are happy. They get their money. The owner was literally on vacation all summer long. It was not okay. Please do NOT work for this company.

I worked with Scholars Edge in 2017 as a branch manager, 2019 as a Field Advisor and returned in 2020 to work as a regional operator. Through all these roles, I have nothing but positive things to say about the company and its management. Scholars Edge gave me the opportunity to apply business skills I learned from my formal education to practical situations and pushed me to develop new skills that other students did not have the opportunity to in their regular 9-5 internships. This is not an experience for the lazy or non-ambitious student. You will work hard, probably harder than you've ever worked in a job. But with your hard work, comes great rewards. Scholars Edge took to me Mexico twice, skydiving, white-water rafting, paint-balling and camping, all for free. Not to mention I made about 2 times more money operating my business than my peers did in their internships. I will graduate this year with a BCOM degree from the Gustavson School of Business and I can honestly say that I owe Scholars Edge as much credit as the 35+ classes I have completed in developing competencies that make me a stronger business person. In conclusion, if you consider yourself a hard worker, entrepreneur and want to complete an internship that will truly make you a better person: Scholars Edge is for you. Do not take this opportunity if you are not prepared to put in 100% effort because the only person who can guarantee success is you.

Had a great experience running my own business in Port Coquitlam. All of management was super supportive/helpful and all (most) other operators were very kind and likable people to work with! The Vancouver lower mainland operators had a huge impact on the positive work culture, coached by a very supportive DM.

This is the place to work if you are cut out for Entrepreneurship and Management. You'll be working harder than you've ever done before, work crazy 60-80 hour weeks doing all sorts of work from being on the field, to the office, and in the local community (D2D marketing). You got to be into the process to love the job (I did).

No one ever tells you about how mentally capable you have to be to run a successful business; always remember: you are what you put in your business. A lot people burn out and quit, they're the only ones who say they had a bad experience... Don't listen to them!

As someone who has always been interested in entrepreneurship but wasn't sure where to start Scholars Edge was the ideal opportunity. The skills I've gained in this position are invaluable. I've gotten the chance to learn everything from sales, to building marketing teams, to project management and training crews and employees. Scholars Edge places a lot of emphasis on supporting every operator they hire, I've always had someone I could call and ask for help and fellow operators I can lean on for support. The work culture and community are strong. The biggest challenge I ran into with this position was the learning curve. I came in knowing nothing but the support I had built up my skill set, and I was able to succeed as a result. Hands down, the best part of the job is the agency you have. You're in the driver's seat, and there is no limit to how big you can build your business. Skys the limit. Growth and progress are my favorite things, and you get that with this position.

In my 3 years working with Scholars Edge, I've learnt far more than just how to paint houses, it has allowed me to foster a close-knit network of motivated peers. In my time at Scholars Edge I have learnt so much surrounding business ownership - including salesmanship, organizational skills, and improving my ability to work with people. I initially got hired by the company with minimal work experience, but the company's training systems and support network still allowed me to be successful. No two days as the manager of a painting franchise are the same; being in a position where I am constantly learning and applying new things is just one of the many reasons why I continue working with the company.


As an Operator at Scholars Edge Painting, I've learned that running a business isn't for the faint-hearted. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but the pay off is worth it. I wouldn't recommend this to someone looking for a relaxed summer job. But if there is a student who; strives to be their own employer, become an entrepreneur, and get paid based on their effort, then Scholars Edge is the right fit.
Proper business opportunities are far and between for students, but taking a risk with Scholars Edge has already led me to develop my business network like no other.
Plus, the interior management and competition is super supportive. You never feel left in the dry and are always pushed to do your best.

A typical day involved prepping surfaces, painting, and ensuring a clean finish. I learned valuable skills in precision, teamwork, and time management. Management was supportive and provided clear instructions, making the job easier. The workplace culture was positive, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and efficiency. The hardest part of the job was working in extreme weather conditions, especially in the summer heat. However, the most enjoyable part was seeing a project completed and knowing the work made a real difference. Overall, a great experience with a fantastic team.

Overall, not impressed. Although I very much enjoyed the painting and work aspect of this position, I found the destructive criticism and unsafe work to become too intense. Despite the lack of training I was provided with prior to entering this position, employees are expected to perform all prep work and painting to the point of perfection. I would highly recommend against applying for a position here as I feel young students are being taken advantage of for their extremely hard work. Last but not least, I had been offered $20/hr and found out I had been barely making minimum wage. Deceptive company management.

If you aren't a motivated person, don't bother applying for this opportunity. This job is for those who are driven to succeed, for those who want to expand their work experience and those who want to greatly improve their resume. Scholar's Edge prepared me to run a business for two summers in a row, and both years being very successful. I have become much more confident in my communication skills and taking leadership roles. All those who are excepted are given plenty of materials needed and guidance along the way in order to be successful. Even if you don't know how to paint, they'll train you so that you can train your own employees. Over all a great experience, definitely had some tough times and long hours, but in the end worth it!

Being part of Scholars Edge Painting for three years has been a life-changing experience. I've had the opportunity to develop essential skills in leadership, sales, and business management while running my own profitable operation. The hands-on experience of managing projects, hiring and training a team, and delivering high-quality service to clients has given me confidence in my abilities as an entrepreneur. The challenges I faced pushed me to grow, and the rewards have been incredibly fulfilling. This program has not only shaped my business mindset but has also prepared me for future ventures with real-world skills and experience.
