Scholars Education Centre

I joined this centre as a Lead Teacher and went through shadowing and probation. The students themselves were mostly great. However, the onboarding and management style of the Education Director were extremely strict and detail-focused, with frequent reprimands over minor procedural issues. 

I felt uncomfortable that feedback was often delivered abruptly and occasionally in front of students, which created a stressful environment and made it difficult to ask questions or clarify expectations. I also didn’t safe speaking up as I didn’t feel supported and that I would be reprimanded immediately if I said something.

During probation, expectations around punctuality (like you cannot go to the washroom for more than 1-2 mins) , preparation, and centre procedures (tables and boxes have to be set up exactly like how the education director wants it because of the company’s image) were very high, which made it a very anxious and stressful environment for me. When I offered a suggestion that feedback could be given after sessions rather than in front of students, the Education Director responded very defensively as if I were challenging her authority (my goal was to try to make it safer environment for everyone), and I was terminated on the spot without a formal probation review conversation.

In the end, the centre’s management culture and my working style were not a good fit. You may  thrive here if you prefer all the work done for you in highly controlled, micromanaged environment with very rigid operational standards. For me, it was somewhere that felt top down and that I didn’t really feel supported to speak up and got fired because of a suggestion. 

Interesting experience as onboarding was practically nil. 
Student binders were ready once you came in but were often overflowing with previous work and was hard to match sheets at times to online information. Lots of repetition in the worksheets and students got frustrated as in "why am I doing this again?" especially when they proved they knew it. 
Students were rotated through different instructors seemingly at random which did not always work out for the best particularly with the different teaching styles. A lot of talk and teach with younger students rather than hands on experiences particularly with Math. 
Most enjoyable was working with the kids, hardest part was dealing with the admin who were often unorganised and reluctant to answer basic questions as they were too busy. Hard to define culture as schedules were frequently changed due student needs and inconsistent hours for some staff. Most staff were amenable to chat and answer questions and were looking to improve their skills as there was no staff development from what one could see. Basics were if the student knows it - move them on and get new sheets, if not have the repeat and redo with new sheet. How things were taught were left to the tutors discretion be it Maths, English, Comprehension or something else. Very little consistency and staff feedback.

Scholars is a great, stress-free workplace with awesome management that enable you to succeed. Work-life balance is great as there is no take-home work and the managers are very flexible with schedules. The environment is very helpful and positive, however there is little opportunity to collaborate with coworkers.

Some of the best parts of working at Scholars is that all the behind-the-scenes work of tutoring is done for you—there is no need to lesson plan and talk to parents. Additionally, you only teach up to 3 students at once and there is lots of support to help manage student behaviour. All you need to do is teach so if you enjoy working closely with children, this will be a perfect job for you!

Rewarding job, but very underpaid for skills provided as Teaching degree and Ontario Certificate are required. A typical shift is from 2 - 4 hours long at quite a low pay.  It can also be quite chaotic at times especially with abrupt schedule changes as parents and/or students change their minds or miss a lesson.  Work can be unsteady .  The hardest part of the job is meeting company's expectations of the teacher to complete tasks such as marking, making notes, providing differentiated instruction for 3 students and having students complete all work, while managing students' behviour as well.

Working At Scholars Mississauga is great experience for me. Right from day one I found the place full of great energy, all team members fully focused on making sure students learn. Management is extremely friendly and flexible. Onboarding & training is top quality with all resources made available. The Centre is well organized & team members treated with respect. My thrill at this job is to  see students benefiting from the program and become better learners.

There's a large focus on reading, so no matter your specialty, you'll inevitably end up teaching reading to elementary school students. Like most centres you're overworked and underpaid but it's a good stepping stone for better tutoring jobs and a good way to get experience tutoring English. Boss kept paying me late and the best employee retired during my tenure - it made it clear that the company existed to make money more than educate students after a certain point. 

Be careful what you sign and what you agree to.  You will be asked to work until you have nothing left in you.  There is no value for anything you do and management has no relational skills.  It is not a team atmosphere.  Very little training and you need to be able to learn on your own.

Love working at Scholars and connecting with my students.It is very enjoyable to work with students of various ages and see them progress throughout the school semester. Also the manager of the centre is very friendly and creates a very comfortable and encouraging working atmosphere.

Teaching at Scholars is a great way for those interested in or currently working in education. Great way to earn extra money and use teaching skills. Students of all ages and abilities are welcome and the environment is incredibly well suited to learning.

Woking at the scholars center has been rewarding. I enjoy working with the educators that help student achieve their goal of learning as well as challenging them on different aspects of the course that are taught in class.
