Serious Coffee

With serious coffee, it started great. Free lunch, tips, it seemed awesome. Until the owners started getting unprofessionally personal. When that happened, they started using it against me. I met my best friends there, but it shouldn't be a long term option if you're considering it. I had tried to call in sick, after waking up late and feeling like garbage, I messaged my supervisor because I felt scared to call or message the owner. The supervisor took my message and showed it on their phone to the owner, who then took the phone and messaged me from the supervisors Facebook profile. Then berated me on their own phone a few minutes later. The work atmosphere was great, unless one of the owners were around. After one of them came in it was just stressful. Like I said, it's a great job, easy to learn with tip outs every day, and amazing customers! It just should not be a long-term option for anyone. In my time with serious coffee, I saw the entire team rotate out, which was a red flag but I stuck it out in hopes it was just people who didn't like the job.

A typical work day could start anywhere between 5:45 am for opening to 12 pm for closing shifts. Generally two employee's working the same shift, depending on the location you could be working with a drive through. (I recommend getting your Serving It Right online before applying!). You will learn how to work their electronic system, how to use the espresso machine, how to make the food they serve, proper food handling and drink handling etiquette, and much more. 
The customers are honestly the highlight of every shift; Serious Coffee customers are quite serious about keeping the place as their main hub for the golden liquid! You will develop professional friendships with the guests, while your coworkers will become borderline family. I think I can speak for all employees working there that it is one of the best coffee shop companies out there to work for!

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people I work with are interesting and talented individuals. The community is supportive and caring. The role of operations manager allows me to  build relationships and discover new opportunities. The challenges are rewarding. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part is being organized and being able to forecast. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Team orientated, fun, entertaining and enhjoyable

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Opening duties to get the shop up and running, control checks, product placement, accounting, customer service, handling orders, dealing with vendors and daily tasks.

a busy, bustling cafe type job is perfect for me. i am trained as a barista, i can make a mean cappucino, and i enjoy chatting with regulars. i was allowed to put my art up on the wall and sell it there, so that was nice. i had a hard time with the ever-changing managers, a position i couldn't accept due to another job, and head office was always the least understanding part of the job. i liked counting the cash at the end of the day because i am fast with coins, and i like preparing sandwiches when it's slow because it keeps me busy. i worked there for two years because i enjoyed the flow.

When I worked there it seemed amazing, Heaven sent job but the further I got into it, the more toxicity would show up. the management was HORRIBLE, the scheduling was terrible, the communication was even worse, never consistent themselves. They liked to play favourites and would make you feel like you owe them everything because they hired you. Other then that aside it’s a nice job, everyone you work with is absolutely amazing, can be cliquish but overall would treat you with respect and help out if you needed the support. The customers are so sweet and nice and it’s a great location. 

Serious coffee is a all around great place to go to meet with friends hang out and have a cup of coffee, the environment there is very friendly and warming. The baristas and management always make sure you get what you need in order for you to have a satisfactory visit.

I learned a lot of skills I use today and met so many great people who I am still friends with but once the manager began to hire relatives, the work environment went down dramatically.

The owner would pretend to break in to the store when I was closing the store at night alone.

The owner would yell at his children in front of customers.

By far the best job I've had. A fast-paced work environment keeps the time moving quickly. Management and coworkers become like family. Everyone has each other's back, plus the customers are for the most part really nice. Worked there for a year and a half, and would have stayed longer if I didn't have to move. 

Some days are busy and some are slow, busy days make things go by faster because there's always something to do. Typically you will switch back and forth with your co-worker(s) from making drinks, making food and being on till. I learned barista skills and how to work as a team. Co-workers and management are a bonus here.

Serious Coffee provides a good starter job for older students wanting to learn basic skills such as making coffee & tea, cooking/baking, washing dishes, and general clean-up, while attending high school or university.The flexible hours makes it appealing.
