I worked at Shalom for about a year as a dietary aide, then I worked simultaneously as a pandemic screener when COVID-19 hit. 
It was great to work at a place that championed good values, community living, and camaraderie. 
I found the atmosphere and management in the dietary department disheartening. There was a high rate of turnover in management and it was very difficult to voice concerns or fix chronic problems. Staff meetings that could have been used to improve kitchen workflow often turned into high-intensity blame sessions urging everyone to vaguely 'do better' instead of addressing concrete issues that could have been collaboratively solved. 
The seniors were lovely to work with. Many of the staff at Shalom have essentially dedicated their lives to helping elderly people, and I'm grateful to have worked with such a caring bunch. Shalom suffers from many of the issues that other long-term care homes do, which were, of course, especially highlighted by the pandemic: overworked or burnt-out staff, turnover in management, often poor oversight. 
COVID-safety protocols were followed quite thoroughly, but many frontline employees were frustrated to see their managers working from home during chaotic periods when they required more help and direction. I left shortly before the COVID-19 outbreak, but was not surprised to hear from a local news article that many care aides felt abandoned as they continued to work (increasingly understaffed) at the front-lines without any direct support from management. I understand this was a tragic crisis situation, but I feel for my coworkers that bore witness to COVID fatalities without much workplace support.
Shalom Village is great organization which has certainly taken a beating during COVID, but it had some chronic issues before then. I'm sure the environment here could improve tremendously with stable management.

Shalom Village is a great place to start working and to build the foundation of your career but it's not a place you want to advance. The RSP and benefit package for non-union members is standard but the most frustrating is the pay - it's garbage. Thinking you deserve a raise? Think again - you likely won't get anything but an alternative that you could have more vacation time. Sure, that sounds like a deal but vacation time doesn't help you advance financially. The important thing to remember is that Shalom is a not-for-profit so finances are always tight. The only way to get an increase in pay - hope someone quits/gets fired from a higher position and that individual's pay would be absorbed by other employees.

A typical work day would be in the mornings, getting residents up and ready for breakfast. Wash any residents if scheduled. Feed any residents that are required to be feed. Bring residents to any events or activities during the day, try and keep the residents active by going on walks, or getting them to do any daily chores (for example folding towels). Having snacks for residents. Being a student at this facility learning was a good experience all co-workers were warm and inviting, it taught me to always show respect to the residents and family. They showed me different cultural beliefs and how to record information a newly computerized data base.

Each day is quite full filling as I en devour to practice what i was taught. My aim is always to help people who are in need. Working in my facility could be challenging at times as we deal with residents who have different medical problems but team work is our best resource of help. Management is very supportive and provide training when necessary on an ongoing basis . Work place is full of joy and excitement as we try to make our residents feel at home. Hardest part is when a resident passes away and most enjoyable part is at the end of the shift when we all can say, job well .

Overall, they’re friendly though they’re a few bullies.

Weekend less people around, less noise, less complaints

Salary should be increased due to the heavy workload for nurses, or a regular wound nurse should come daily to cover lots of wound dressing for residents, so that floor nurses can focus on med pass for those 30-31 residents, plus monitoring if someone has a fall or other illness. Management just keeps adding the workload with assessments and tasks.

Over worked and underpaid. Staff go above and beyond and there is no regognition. Managers are always on power trips and treat their employees bad.  It is not a place to move up in wage or in you're specific field.  Concerns from staff are never touched upon . Hard work is never aprechiated or recongnized.

the most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with seniors and making a difference in their day and the hardest part of the job was interacting with family members who do not understand dementia 
co workers were fairly good but management wasn't the greatest

The residents and families are fantastic and loving. The nurses and psw staff can be great depending on which floor you work on. When management fails so do the employees. Employees start to think they are now acting managers and are degrading and rude.
