Shiny Bud Cannabis Co.

Title states exactly that, they were a half decent company to work for before they became corporate and exclusively focused on opening as many stores as possible without having a relationship with any of their employees which in turn causes a revolving door of staff. Extremely poor work/life balance as it’s essentially non-existent if you’re in a manager role in any capacity with the expectation that you’ll do a lot of work at home unpaid “for the good of the company, help it grow” etc. Far too much focus put into things that don’t matter and employee concerns/suggestions almost always fall on deaf ears or with empty promises from management. Also it may have been situation specific to my location/region but a lot of my coworkers and i were put in the position of either working through our breaks (unpaid, still) to make sure the store stayed open (they didn't want to overlap staff) or they would cut our shifts to under 5 hours and since we had just opened the store we were already desperate for hours as is. All in all i’ve seen a lot of extremely well educated and fantastic bud-tenders/managers jump ship for better opportunities and after having been one of those people myself, the grass can definitely be greener on the other side. 

ShinyBud opened a new location last fall and with very little warning, shutdown for the season. They reopened in April of this year, assuring staff they would permanently stay open.  Throughout the season a business phone was never installed, they was no air circulation or AC, leaving staff to work in unbearable heat conditions. Staff worked alone and up to 10 hours with no breaks. The  company took until July to issue T4’s from the previous year. Towards the end of the tourist season staff was reassured again they would not be closing ifor the fall/winter season. 
In October with only hours notice, the owners closed their doors with minimal communication. 
Instead of offering apologies and gratitude towards the staff they let go right before Christmas, they went on vacation.  
This is also not the first location this has happened. 
I urge anyone who considers working for this company to do your research so you are not blindsided. 

you work in a store alone for your entire shift, so you work through your break. there’s only 3 other employees total working there. they’ll also promote you and have you doing more work without extra pay and will just keep telling you “ it’ll be approved soon hopefully “ and you never get it. and it’s like pulling teeth trying to get different stock in! You can tell them a hundred times what products your customers have been asking for but they still won’t give it to you if they don’t think it’ll sell. and then they’ll wonder why it’s not busy. 

Horrible management. They'll throw you into the deep end mid training then tell you to stop complaining because you're still on probation. They. Will. Take. Every. Advantage. Of. You. Then. Dispose. You. For. Nothing. Managers across locations abusing employees, they stick together and have each others backs. They don't care about you. Only the clients.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Stay away, micro management owner who has zero to no regard for employees, gives hours notice before shutting the store down. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
You'll work alone for long hours with bare shelves
 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The staff is great, everything else should be investigated.

The worst place to work, corporate does not care about their employees at all. They will force you to do duties well above your pay grade and without a proper retail managers license. They force their employees to sign non-compete agreements even tho they are not legally binding at all, and they hire young people who are new to the workforce in order to manipulate them and exploit them. 

Was beyond excited to work in the cannabis industry, but after working for this company, that excitement and passion was killed. You get NO overtime, even when Managers don't hire more employee's and just overwork the ones they have. They claim to be "like a family" ... Yeah, if that family is dysfunctional. 

If i still lived in the province, i would likely return to work at ShinyBud. Out of all the Cannabis dispensaries i have worked at, ShinyBud was by far the best. The workplace culture was unmatched, there was constant opportunities to expand knowledge from brand ambassadors doing pop-up events and with that came free stuff, which was greatly appreciated. I miss ShinyBud and if one popped up in Calgary, i would apply without any hesitation. 

Terrible place to work. Was hired full time and never made it close to 20 hours a week.. there was only 3 other employees. Micromanaging through cameras from higher ups, whole company treats staff like they’re disposable. Lowest pay possible as well. Cheap towards staff as well, got a 5$ gift card to shiny bud for the Christmas holidays. Had to leave as I was not getting enough hours or pay.

I was promoted shortly after being hired, it took them 6 months to actually process the promotion, and then they refused to give me retropay. Also, shortly after getting my raise (half a year later) they cut my hours so I was making even less money than before. Upper management has proven time and time again that they would rather slash their employees than listen to them
