Shred-It

In the morning you do a stretching routine and a lesson on safety then management tells you what drivers are doing wrong and what needs to "get better". Then, you get your route list, which has usually been added to from the night before. Then you go to get your assigned truck because it usually changes from day to day and do your pre-trip inspection and then away you go. 
Your day will consist of regular service calls, console and tote deliveries and "puges". Purges can be boxes or totes of  many many many or a few. New drivers usually get the harder routes because of favoritism. One driver is in WSIB permanent modified duties due and two other drivers are on WSIB., one long term and the other just recently.
Management is not very concerned because they get criticized too so they just want to get the job off their desk.
You will hear a lot of complaints from customers about the company's terrible customer service..
There's a lot of back stabbing by other drivers. If they don't like you they'll try to get you fired.
The parent company, stericycle, has just been bought by a bigger company so there is a lot of uncertainty about the future of the Toronto (East York) location 
Toronto (East York) location has been in a Teamsters local for over 3 months and no Collective Bargaining Agreement has been ratified as it's still being bargained.
There's a lot to think about before accepting or applying for a job here 


Think paper isn't very heavy? Try lifting 200 or more Banker Boxes full of it or large bags that can hold up to 100 lbs of paper and think again. Most times boxes are splitting apart as well, making lifting harder. 

Customers are the worst part of the job. They routinely overfill 'console' boxes, jamming them full of paper because they don't want to have to pay for another console. They will pile stuff in front of console forcing you to move their stuff to service it. When they have a 'purge' they will pile up their stuff in basements or other inaccessible areas forcing you to carry stuff outside by hand.

You will often be lied to by customers, they say '10 boxes' you show up and there is 50 or more and you are not scheduled to have enough time to shred them so you fall behind quickly. 

And God Forbid if you are dealing with their splitting lidless boxes outside and a few sheets of paper blow away in the wind, that is considered a 'Security Breach' and you will be fired. Even if the customer had truck doors you could have used to keep out of the wind and load more efficiently but they insisted you park outside on a city street on a very windy day.

Team work was NOT a part of office morale in Cambridge.  Breaking people down, stealing accounts and cheating was more the style that was preferred!  I would never recommend this.company to anyone.  GO TO THE COMPETITION!!!!  They are cheaper, more.secure and treat the employees fair!
The small tight cubicles sucked, the heat barely worked, I brought in my fireplace and left it when I quit so other people wouldn't be cold and I had the most uncomfortable chair, I ended up going and buying my own because they were too cheap to supply one that was actually correct for my Posture!   yes, a very CHEAP company with no care for the worker indeed!!!

This job is a good starting sales job if you want B2B experience. If you have any other aspirations or goals, this company is not going to fulfill it. No matter how well you achieve or sell.

Company as a whole is in a huge mess. Limited number of spots to advance. Upper management is extremely comfortable in their spots and have lost their sense to uplift employees. Ethics is always questioned and always a battle between operations and sales.

This job is great for flexibility, learning B2B sales but that’s about it. Compensation plan has been changed for the worse. There’s is a ceiling with this organization which can be demotivating for most. 

There are many other sales organizations that are healthier and more uplifting to work at. I would  definitely recommend continuing your search elsewhere.

Decent place to work. Compressed week makes for a day off or make OT. Wage is ok and benefits are decent too. Local supervisors overworked so takes a while to get things taken care of. 

New operating system has made day to day routine more difficult and is frustrating to use. Driver feedback about routes and customers goes unheard because of sloppy,  unorganized system. 

Decent trucks, but not dedicated so always a mess and no accountability to keep clean. Fast paced if you work that way but be ready to pick up others slack. Uniforms provided and cleaned, work phone provided. Personally had a good working relationship with supervisors so it made it easier to communicate and work around personal schedule issues/needs. 

All in all a decent place to work.


Hours were good, overtime if required. Benefits package was basic and wages were a bit low. Great moral and fun with the drivers in the locker room. Meeting clients, communicated effectively ensuring they had all supplies required and troubleshoot any issues or concerns they were having. Close to home was a real bonus. Standing outside in the cold would be a negative and the hardest part of the job was climbing up and down stairs where clients did not have elevators carrying over 100 lb bags to be brought to the truck and shredded on site. All shredding was completed on site.  The union tried to collaborate, management changed and staff were laid off. 
This Oakville location no longer exists.

Shred-it has a good job culture where life-work balance can be easily achieved.  People are nice and all races and creeds are welcomed.

Due to several lately mergers and acquisitions, there was some job insecurity.

Shred-it makes employees at all levels (from reception to CEO) to participate in the service we provide to the clients which, in my opinion, it's the best part of the job.  Interacting face-to-face with the client, learning the day-to-day activities of the Customer Service Representatives (including carrying heavy sacks of paper to be shredded) provides an insight of what is expected from us, what are the main difficulties and what are the best solutions.

Company is great for learning, and as a stepping stone for career but do not expect advancements. No it does not matter how good you are or what you do for the company. Shred-It (now Stericycle) will always want exceptionally high standards.

Work hours are 8-5. You have to be online in MS Teams and your status must show available at all times or it will be noticed.

Things are not super micro managed but you also need to be prepared to explain any deviation from the norm.

If you enjoy solving problems and getting satisfaction from doing so, there are lots of opportunities here for you.

The Calgary branch has been a great place to work. The morning manager is fantastic and takes time to listen and empathize with both work and life struggles.

Co-workers while rough around the edges will go out of their way to give you a hand.

Job can be both physically and mentally demanding but you leave each day with a sense of accomplishment.

The most enjoyable part of the job is interacting with customers. From my experience, the customers you service appreciate the work you are providing and take the time to learn your name.

Do you like not knowing what you will be doing everyday? Do you like not knowing what equipment( Truck) you will be tasked to use each day? On site or off site trucks. Do you like not knowing how to operate said trucks and power attachments because they are all different? Will it work? Will I get my route done? 

Do you like not knowing where anything is kept at each clients location 18 to 25 times per day? Then you will love this job. This is all learn as you go because there is 10000 clients the learning curve never ends. But the pay rate does, nor does it prepare you for a better career elsewhere.
