Sick Childrens Hospital

Worked more so on the corporate side of SickKids, but had a lot of crossover into the clinical side. It seems like a lot of employee experience is dictated by the direct team/management, so keep that in mind. I was lucky to have a great manager who was very supportive and went to bat for their team often. There was a lot of collaboration between teams which was both unexpected and lovely to see (I came from other companies where this was not the case). However, with these collaborations comes a little bit of a slower pace. Overall it was a great experience, I had to leave for unforeseen reasons but would go back. 

Other miscellaneous things that come to mind, the food options they have on-site at the main hospital are actually pretty good and decently priced. They have a wide range of food and beverage options, from “junk food” to healthy options. And if you’re up for a short walk, there are many local restaurants close by that offer discounts to hospital workers. 

Only con that comes to mind is how expensive staff parking is. $16 a day if I remember correctly (that includes the staff discount).

On a typical day I will check into work and head up to the Caliper office where i will build information packages, blood donation packages (used only by trained phlebotomist), make copies of forms and information sheets, enter information from blood donation into the database, re-check information put into the system by other individuals. I have learned to work in a fast paste environment and pay attention to detail. I have learned to not make mistakes because it is very important to make sure the right numbers are being put into the database. The environment is very friendly and positive. Everyone working at the hospital are always welcoming and willing to lend a helping hand. The hardest part of the job is reading handwriting of certain individuals when entering information into the database because sometimes the writing is not as clear. The most enjoyable part of the job is interacting with children, volunteers, and others. Being able to help out and make a difference is amazing.

A typical day at work is just like anyones typical say at work, very busy and you always have something to do to keep you busy. 

I have learned a lot of new things since working at Sick Kids; like how to deal with customer service, my knowledge of medical terminology and my vocabulary has evolved. I have worked with knowledgeable people and have developed my typing skills more. 

Some of my co-workers are great to work with, they help you out and teach you how to better myself. They are trustworthy and are great supporters of both my professional and personal life. 

The hardest part of my job are when families disrespect you and treat you like you're nothing and when the other staff members don't treat you as equals. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is lunch time, also when we have socials with our co-workers and when everyone gets along.

Every department, role and position will be drastically different but here is my experience. 

Pros: 
-Flexible work schedule 
-Fair pay
-Professional development training
-Manageable workload 
-Most families are appreciative and acknowledge your hardwork

Cons:
-Toxic workplace 
-Too many politics 
-Divide between frontline staff and clinicians/doctors and no resolution on how to fix this from management 
-High turnover of staff (both frontline and doctors) 


I really loved helping kids. They’re so cute but most management is not diverse if u know what I mean and that discrimination trickles down the position pole. Many colour workers are cleaning staff etc nurses are mostly Caucasian doctors there’s a mix but the staff (head dr) again usually less diverse. I dunno I liked it but management and bosses need to hire more visable minorities in my opinion and also unionize their employees

Working at SickKids provides invaluable experience, especially in pediatric nursing. The hospital is well-known for its specialized care, and you get to work with highly skilled professionals.
There are plenty of learning opportunities, including workshops and in-services, which help with professional growth.
The patient population is inspiring, and being part of a team that makes a difference in children’s lives is rewarding.

Sick childrens hospital is an amazing place to work, visit, tour or even just get lost in. The environment is filled with inviting caring people that support and ensure a safe and comfortable experience for those that enter this building. Working there has been a truly amazing experience & I'm honoured & grateful to be apart of the Sick Childrens magical team.

The care provided to patients and families, the research to find better treatments, prevention strategies and cures is top tier. However, the stress level is unbelievable for staff. High workload, low staffing all the primary contributors to why the team dynamics are typically dysfunctional and at staff are at odds with each other. 

Very difficult during Covid restrictions. Senior managers  completely lost the thread with the team.  Just saying...
Best part of the work was my colleagues. Smart accomplished and generous people.  I learned so much! 

Sick kids is a fun environment while still being serious and full of purpose. This experience allows you to meet with individuals who are also volunteers as well as individuals you are aiming to help, which is very rewarding in its self
