I have worked in this establishment for 2 1/2 years. There are  many benefits to this job, you receive benefits and get paid either hourly or by commission. You start of by hourly and when you become frequently busy you receive commission. This company provides many educational opportunities which is great because not many salons offer that. Every Location is differently run and you will not know what the environment is like until you start. As long as you have a flexible schedule and are a reliable punctual employee there should not be any problems in this work place. It can be  a fast paced workplace and usually I find the smart style locations get a large variety of service (colour, style,and cut) which is wonderful because there are many just cut and go salons. You get paid minimum wage, unless you become a manger or district leader. You do get to keep all of your tips which helps. If you plan to stay in the company for a long time and would like to become a manger/district leader when the positions are available it could end up being a wonderful place to work in the long run. Every employee environment is different but I found most employees and their managers  are very friendly and understanding.Overall a great workplace and a friendly environment.

This can be a very fun workplace environment with the right people.  If you are willing to put in the work this is a great salon to work at. But if you are not willing to continue your education/ skills or ask for help when you need it than this is not the environment for you.  If you are a new stylist ask for help on services and products you are not sure how to work with. It is always best to ask for help than to make a big mistake that requires a redo in services. Most stylists are happy to help teach and guide one another. As for working for this company you eventually reach a cap unless you want to become a district. Manager it’s not really worth the long haul of sticking around until retirement.  Benefits are good and tips can be to depending on location. There is a commission additional pay if you reach it. Most stylists work here until they get a large enough clients or until they feel confident enough in there skill set to move on. But there are a few long haulers that stick around as mangers, I do not think they are paid enough.

What is the best part of working at the company?
No commute. It closes early during the week and weekends. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Company make schedules at their convenience  regardless employees needs, cutting employees hours without notice , it’s very difficult to get clientele because you never know which days you are going to work the next two weeks. Also it’s difficult to manage work and personal life because management change schedules many times AFTER putting out a supposed confirmed one. 
Training in the computer was poor. 


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Environment is not a positive one. 
The company micromanages employees. 
HR is not impartial. 
Very frustrating due to lack of communication.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I started with 18/week 
Ended with 9/week (average)
Due to 3 hours per day it was not too much I could do. 
It was hard to create clientele and do big jobs like colours or highlights.

Working at Smartstyle has it's up's and down's. 
It is VERY good if you are starting off and you want to grow faster in your cuts and service. 
Not so good if you stick with them and no other salon...you could be working with some very unproffesional employees and even an acting manager. Oh yeah. And since it's in walmart the floor was stained beyond repair, one broken chair, hair all over the backroom, colour stains on chairs...in short: it's a dirty salon if they are cheap to fix it. 

Oh YES...I almost forgot. Trying to ask for time off, especially for religious holiday reasons is almost impossible there. Better to work at a Sunday-Monday salon, even self-employment so you can choose your hours.

The lack of respect from both management and clients 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The company lacks respect for its employees and there is a lot of nepotism. Especially from district managers. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
In the summer, there is a lack of air conditioning and in the winter you freeze.  The lack of cooperation the company has to fix anything is disappointing and disheartening.

I worked here for 4 years, mostly as a location manager. During my time there, we were almost always short-staffed and that made for a very stressful work environment. They offered an amazing benefits package, which I still miss, and the pay scale was mostly fair. I worked well above full-time, often putting in 10-12hour days trying to keep the shop running, and trying to meet goals set by upper management at head office. The immediate management above me was great, and tried to understand for the most part, but as a corporation, I didn’t feel like we were treated fairly as staff/management.

Understaffed and underpaid. No advancement opportunities. Education is limited to basic skills and common sense courses online. Staff not supported for any extra courses outside of (Regis Corp) education.
The pay structure is terrible and you don't make any money no matter how hard you work. Not much positive to say about this place other than you are garanteed to at least make minimum wage.

nothing just a number to push product sale

no time off some nine days in a row some eleven

drama to sell products always compete to get basically nothing

unload trucks do clients clean

Sometimes not being able to say no to the customer
