Non-union vs Union environment.

This company is a great place to make a high income if you're in the right circles through overtime. Not much room for advancement which usually leads to a lower income. For field staff operating has an unofficial project manager and estimator are not properly compensated and in fact paid the same as ones without the additional responsibilities. Bonuses are hard to come by and if so are way below market value for office staff. 

Small cliques (former companies) exist in the company which is detrimental to keeping one company mentality. This clash as created improper pay per collective agreement, as this is the apparent reason as they must remain competitive so the field staff are unjustly paid the wrong hourly wage without consent. If not following these rules you seem to start to lose your weekly hours.

Forced unpaid contractor training to just be able to work. When requesting to be paid for training, emails are dismissed.

All in all, I had a great time in my position and have lots of take away. Just note, any suggestions for improvements will always go unheard.

Great employees either leave on their own accord or get dismissed for simply stating the facts which would lead to overall improvements.

Tread with caution, however enjoy the small number of great skilled co-workers.

Smith and Long is a good company to gain experience and learn new skills sets however it is still very behind in company culture. They do most of the big projects and are rapidly growing. High turnover rate, you never know when you will be fired. People are overworked and dont get compensated for their hardwork. The company is hiring consistently during the pandemic which means there is alot of work. Much needs to be done however and the owner recognizes this through his management team. Unfortunately the company is fully staffed and there is no consideration of its employee health which reflects on its poor culture. They do not show care for the health and safety of their employees and are much more focused on achieving monetary goals. Safe distancing isnt practiced or adhered to and many are in close proximity to others. This is in relation to its fast growth and operation similar to a start up and hence many people are overworked and essentially work many different roles with limited compensation. Goodluck. 

I've been with Smith and Long Limited as a Billing Administrator, and I couldn't be happier. The team here is exceptional, offering unwavering support and camaraderie. One of the standout perks at Smith and Long is their Summer Friday’s policy, which allows employees to leave early on Fridays during the summer months. As a Billing Administrator, I've grown immensely in this supportive environment. Smith and Long Limited is not just a workplace; it's a second home filled with fantastic people and endless growth opportunities. Highly recommended!  

Please do not leave  your previous company to join Smith and Long, S&L might offered you more money from the place you work, or you might be unemployed, a newly graduated person seeking for a job, I would say this company not worthy it, countinue searching you will find better places, because this management do not care about the employees, they usually talk about giving you opportunity to grow when you negotiating your salary at the time of offer. when you get hired and start working, you will see many brochures about focus on happiness or 1000 happy and productive employees, but suddenly they will fire you for no reason. you do not believe it! they push you to leave the company, even you do not have time to say good bye to your colleagues, so this is against their values, this management team are unprofessional. I do not recommend you to join S&L

At the quarterly town hall meeting in September 2020, the President announced to the whole company that our 5 Year Mission was to have 1000 Happy and Productive people working in the company. This commitment drives everything that the company does, like tuition/sport sponsorship, Christmas Party and other company events. It is definitely a fast paced environment much like a software start-up company and the company is constantly growing. Even during COVID the company was hiring and expanding. I love my role here and the company operates like a family.

I have been with Smith and Long for over a year now. The staff and management are above all the most friendly people I have ever worked for. Everyone is so happy to help at any point when you get stuck. The biggest part I found different from any other company I have worked for is there is no gate keeping here, you get to learn and do everything. If you want to expand and grow you have those opportunities right in front of you. Management is so easy to talk to and work alongside with to help the company grow.
Since I work outside the main office they have still made me feel like apart of the team. Like I said everyone is so wonderful to work with. I promise you this company won't disappoint. We also have great summer perks where we get to leave early on Fridays which is so refreshing.

The RESPONSE culture filters through every aspect of the organization. While certainly a game changer for customers, it is also lived internally! People are very helpful, and positive. From the first interactions with the HR team through onboarding and everyday work interactions everything is professional but not in a cold way- its friendly. I especially love the speed at which decisions are made/ actions can be taken, while remaining collaborative the speed at which we can operate is truly refreshing.

A typical day is 8 hours; no overtime is needed if you manage your workflow well. I learnt to explore and find solutions to problems that I had never encountered. Management defines your role & you are free to choose your work style to complete the job. Teams are supportive & collaborative. The company is growing exponentially & it keeps you on your toes. There is always something challenging to resolve & conquer.
