I have worked at Southmedic for the most part of the past 18 months.  I have worked in Assembly and the Mold room....for the most part these jobs are repetitive and can get boring at times, but when I applied to work at a factory, I expected that.  

The pay is not the greatest, but its a factory in Ontario in 2019, if you can show me a factory that pays much more in the area, I will listen....

A typical day at work is basically go to work and do your job and go home.

The hardest part of the job is training, at first some parts of the job almost make you want to get up and leave after a day, however, I was told by a team leader to talk to them in a few weeks and let them know what I thought, and once you get the hang of the paper work etc......they were right, as any job, things come together.  It also takes an effort on the part of the employee to make it work, if you go in with a sour attitude, it just won't work out.

When I started, I was told that there was favoritism, that full time staff were bossy and full of attitude.....SO i went in there with my guards up and ready for the attitude.   Do not believe everything that you read or hear, the majority of the employees at southmedic are good people, willing to help new employees learn the job. 

LIke any job, there is good and there is bad, some of the good is that the company pays you for your lunch break, so that you are there for 8 hours and you get paid for 8 hours, they play music on their PA system, in all areas, so it helps the shift go by, they have perks, such as summer bbqs, Christmas potlucks, and little things throughout the year for staff involvement.

In some areas they have had mandatory overtime, which did/does not sit well with many of its employees....Overtime should be voluntary.  The mandatory rules, only for one area,  are/were not fair, as it seems that there are a number of employees that refuse to work and leaving all of the others to be told that they are working.  Many people are not interested in being at work 6/7 days of the week, when being told they have to be, if we choose to be that would be our choice.

The company's vacation day policy is not a popular point as well, full time employees are given 10 days holidays and the longer that you are there,  you obviously get more....the company has a summer shut down in July, and they make the employee use 4 vacation days for that week.  Therefore, as of January 1, your 10 days becomes 6 days of vacation for the year,  though employees appreciate the week off in July, most staff would prefer to have the option of getting paid for that week off by using their 4 days or saving their holidays for a time when they want to use them with their family throughout the year.  In my opinion by giving that option, this may cut down in people calling off throughout the year, those four days of holiday, would more than likely mean 4 days less of sick time for the majority. 

Overall, its a factory, the pay could be a bit better, but i am sure its comparable to most companies, its a clean environment, a friendly atmosphere.  

As far as management, I have no issues with them.  Managers, Supervisors and Team Leaders have a job to do, some do them better than others.  Its their job to run the place, so they do not have to be nice, they tell staff what to do.

If you work at Southmedic, you go in and do your job, follow the rules, there should be no problem.

I think it’s an alright place for someone else, but not me. It’s fine if you are interested in assembly line stuff. 

If you can’t keep up with the expectations though you will not do well. They have high expectations, which is good considering it’s a medical manufacturer. But if you can’t work quickly without in depth training and supervision then find a different job. This is probably why the turnover rate here is so high. There are many temporary employees and few who have been there for years. 

They seriously need to expand, considering how many employees they currently have. There is not enough space for everyone. I was afraid my belongings would get stolen/misplaced because I had no locker. It’s fine if you have a car to put your stuff in. The lunchroom is nice though. 

I did not feel very welcomed here at all, I was quite uncomfortable. The other employees are not friendly whatsoever. Many of the foreign students are quite rude actually. 

I was also not pleased with the lack of social distancing measures (the face shields they make you wear are not appropriate, it should be masks....). The amount of people in the lunch room is not appropriate right now either. I’m shocked they haven’t had an outbreak here.

 Really it all boils down to if you’re interested in assembly line work, you are able to work at an fast pace and you have great math skills. It’s all about numbers here. If you can do that and put up with a large amount of people then this place is good for you. 

TL;DR It wasn’t horrible, Depends on your skills/work ethics, tolerance, etc. Could be a lot worse but needs improvements. 

I worked there for 3 years as a  team leader. Watched as supervisor after supervisor came and went. Always hiring someone else who had no idea what they were about to step into.  Or how anything worked or functioned inside of the factory.  And with very little training for these supervisors . Leaving the teamleaders to basically train there own “supervisor”.  Which works out about aswell as it sounds like it should. And then when that ones gone. They over look everyone inside the building that understands and knows the job. Just to hire someone else to fail 6 months later

Watched as this company started to grow. Then they fired the GM. Hired a new one. And watched as everything started going backwards. Things we had fought for to get fixed. Went back to the old ways. Frustrating everyone. But again theyre on to the 3rd gm in 3 years after the 2nd didnt work out. 

They have a bad habit of re hiring people theyve fired or had quit into higher positions they once held. Doesnt do good for morale. 

The place is so unorganized its not even funny. No one knows how to properly schedule workorders for consistant workflow. People who order the materials to keep lines up an functioning dont know what theyre doing. Lines are consistantly down due to no materials. 

Long story short. If you thrive in chaos. This place is for you

If you want just a free casual job for yourself then you may for this company.
It’s because when they hire you they will discuss their policies in a other way and do something else when implementing them.
Whatever’l they do is right for the company .THEY DONOT CARE ABOUT THEIR EMPLOYEES.
Everyone just care for their status and their own job; whatever happens to regular employee is none of their business.
So, being personally i would not recommend anyone think of going there.
someone or just keep their favourites and let others throw out; that’s totally appropriate and easy for them to do at any point of your job period.
I personally won’t recommend anyone try going and working here coz they change their horrific policies every week and make their own rules.
Even you justify your sick days , they throw you out without any reason.
Thats what professional means to them.
Supervisors and HR department is worst place to go for any kind of help.
If you take one day off , you get fired.
If you get sick or injured, get fired.

Whatever listed in your probation or job letter, isn’t true at all.
Don’t trust them.
They Just hire people, and terminate or back  them off at any time they want without even giving a reason.
Thats how i call “insecure job”.
Overall, i would say a worst place to work and worst management in general.

A company that started out as a small town manufacturing that benefitted the community with a  solid product that people could be proud of producing. 

It has turned on it's head where it is now  a manufacturing company that would do anything to turn a profit (even if it means bending a few ethical rules to increase the bottom dollar)

The owner of the company has removed herself from the business and more interested in lunch dates then the company and she has left her son in charge. 

He is unqualified for his role and changes the company's focus on a dime. There is a such a disconnect between himself and the labour force that he employ's. He treats them like numbers and takes advantage of foreign students that are unfamiliar with their rights.

He has no checks or balances as he has gone through so many senior managers in the company that every one that is employed are "yes" people even if it means breaking Canadian or International Law.

A company with such a good product but they are there own worst enemy as they jeopardize people's life's by their shortcuts. Everyone would be better off if they sell to a company or person that has the experience within the health care industry that can clean up this company.

Salary/Benefits are below industry average

ask the engineers that work until midnight all wk and then come in on the weekend to troubleshoot about work/life balance.  Ask the materiel handlers and set ups who have to work most weekends about work/life balance.  Ask the customer service rep who cant take a personal day without working remotely about work/life balance. Ask the QA dept how rotating shifts work for their work/life balance.  Ask the receivers who come in every weekend about work life/balance.  

Job Security/Advancement - too many people getting fired... advance at your own risk

Management - some very toxic people have been in management for far too long...  the remaining kind, approachable managers and supervisors will probably be gone by the end of 2018... we are all just $ signs  

Job Culture - many dedicated and inspiring people work for southmedic and leave a positive impact on the job culture

Businesses are only as good as their weakest link and the higher ups were just that. In the short time I was there they reduced benefits and took away our paid lunch break with no benefit to their employees.  During this time they also begged employees to leave good reviews online because they were rated so poorly. The company constantly brought up how much employees used their benefits and how much it cost the company to pay for those benefits meanwhile raising the cost of benefits for employees. After I had left they had laid off a bunch of very good employees only to hire new people. The reasoning? Who knows. The work was very repetitive and very fast paced. The only good thing was you got to move around to different areas sometimes and it was a monday to friday set hours. They also did pay for new steel toed boots and were very kind in giving time off when a family emergency came up. There are some very good management there but above them was a joke. 

It’s mind blowing this place hasn’t been shut down. It’s like walking into a factory in a 3rd world country. They use and abuse foreigners who don’t know their rights. And pit workers against each other and blame their employees for their own failures. They make employees work in terrible conditions they could easily fix but decide it’s not worth it. They’re always cutting corners. I’ve seen products that should have never made it past quality be sold for a hefty profit. Places like this shouldn’t be allowed to exist. The government is failing by leaving southmedic open. It’s a toxic culture bread from the owner and it seeps into everything they do there.  Any positive review they have is because they literally begged their employees to write one. The only good thing about this job was there was so much down time because their warehouse is such a mess it takes them a whole shift to find the product that needs to be made for the shift end. 

I found that SouthMedic was a good place to work. Staff was always a pleasure to work with. The supervisor were always pleasant. Fast passed environment. They are looking for fast and efficient self motivatied people. Assembly work is the main focus of this company.  Making products for them self and other companies. With any company you show initiative, you can go along way with this company. You can always apply for other jobs within the company when posted. A great place for advancement within the Company. They also have Profit Sharing after one year of employment. They have Clean Rooms that you work in. They supply hoodies, gowns and gloves to work in the rooms. They are a air conditioned environment but I felt it was always to warm. It was always easier to wear lighter clothing in this environment.

First of all my interviewer was slouching on my first interview for the company which was very unprofessional and took weeks for any response. Training was way too short. The team leaders are very unprofessional. Employees think they're higher than they should be. Was given the promise of we'll stay in a continental shift but was cut short after assuring us that it would stay. Day comprises of supervisors asking you to do cleaning or what ever which isn't in the job description. I was let go due to them restructuring and already had a hint at it because I also knew about them letting go a bunch of reliable workers and temporary workers. I would've understood that but they let me work at least 80% of my shift before telling me I'm done. I'm glad I found a better company with better management and pay after a stint with this joke of a company
