What is the best part of working at the company?
When you’re hired they try to set you up with certifications you need. Working at Heights, Elevated Work Platforms. Some PPE provided Harness, hard hat, LOTO
Company phone, company drill driver and recip saw. 
Pay scale better now than when I started and everyone seems to be on the same page. 
They are not quick to make changes to your wage or if you’re an apprentice they don’t follow up with your progress so it can be a bit of a struggle to move forward. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Wondering if you’re going to have work. Big company but not enough work for the guys they have so you’ll sit. 

Not quick about pay raises. 
Not clear about what is happening even if it affects the employee. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The guys you work with for the most part are a great bunch and most will help when they can. 

Management is not your friend. They will work you like a rented mule and treat you like a mushroom. 

There is no seniority so if you’re not the golden child or related to management there is very little job security. 


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start time 7:00 at the job site
1/2 hour filling out forms for daily work, inspections, attendance. 
Gather materials get to work. 
1/2 hour break 10-10:30
Back to work
Lunch 1-1:30
Quitting time 3:30
Work is 90% install not a lot of service or repair or trouble shooting

No one to train you for that aspect of the trade so if you’re an apprentice you will be an installer not a well rounded electrician

I'm just going to get right into it. Don't bother working for Spark. 

Pay is lower than industry plus vacation pay is only 4%, the work is repetitive, there is little room to grow and management does not care about the people who do the work. 

The benefits that they tell you about are not good. Profit sharing is less than $300 per person at the end of the year (and there are no end of year bonuses either this is it), the RRSP matching is only up to 1.5% of your salary so if you make $80,000 a year the max they will match is only $1200 and to top it off the RRSP matching is only in company stocks which is down 75% in the past year. For a company who was bragging about record profits in their internal messaging they sure are cheap. 

The jobs are all run by kids, one job I was at was run by a 3rd term apprentice who was severely lacking in experience.  

On the other hand they do provide tools and boot allowances each $200 so if you are just getting into the trade it might not be the worst idea to come work for a few months get signed on and then leave after. It is easy to get hired and the barrier of entry seems low.

The wages are well below the industry standards. Not only are the wages bad but they also only give the minimum for vacation pay. Job sites are ran by inexperienced very young journeymen and apprentices . This is due to the fact that the younger guys do not know what else is out there as far as employment goes. Spark Power continues to use deceitful ways to make it seem like they care by offering incentives such as “profit sharing”. The most a employee can receive from profit sharing is a bit over $200.  As well a couple hundred a year for tools. When A company mentions profit sharing and tool allowance you think that wow this company is awesome. At the end of the day Spark Power is under cutting union bids just by a little bit in order to get the work. When you realize it cost about $100 an hour for a union electrician that’s getting paid over $50/hr plus 12% vacation pay every week, profit sharing and tool allowance from Spark Power is just a blinder.   The  industry is lacking electricians. There is no need to work for Spark Power. At the very least Spark Power needs to start paying 10% vacation pay. 

I'll start with the salary, since its the most important part of any job yet it's the worst part of working for spark. For being such a big company they sure are cheap. Raises are also a slap in the face since you get such a pathetic raise on top of your laughable wage. 

The benefits are also pretty bad. You'll end up paying out of pocket for pretty much everything.

Work life balance is just as bad as the rest of the job, as you don't get pay raises because you get raises in the amount of hours you're allowed to work. Hopefully you don't like your family and don't have any friends! 

The type of work you do is pretty boring if the rest of these negatives aren't bad enough. You are either stuck zip tying cables or doing the same terminations over and over for 95% of the jobs you're on. Thrilling.

The only people I'd recommend applying are those who are looking to start an apprenticeship and can't get in anywhere else, once you get signed up take a walk to any other company.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Company direction changes constantly as a reaction to continually turnover at the Senior Leadership level. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful and secretive. Either lack of informing employees of potential changes that would directly affect them or positioning management to not inform anyone prior to changes being implemented for fear of sabatoge or malfeasance. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Early starts. Many meetings scheduled per day with different facets of the company for update or review of project/policy/direction. Not enough structure in the organizational reporting as low level managers would make decisions resulting in rework to other business units due to no communication. Most senior engineering staff feel they are unaccountable to anyone as they are required and make decisions on projects that suit them best.

My experience at Spark Power has been bitter sweet. Started off awesome, but as management changed over the last 2 years, and with the pandemic taking it effect, I find it hard to advocate for the company. 

Work days are packed and stressful.

Salary is generally below average, with seemingly little to no room for increase.

Work from home is temporary, and they intend to get everyone in office ASAP. From what I remember, the CEO said no employee may work from home unless gov guidelines state they must.

On a positive note, the company has decent benefits, including a $2000 therapy stipend, which is the most I've seen at any company.

On another positive note, they're supposedly getting a new Oakville office soon.

The people at Spark are awesome. All of them care about their job and team. If there's one thing I can give them 5 stars on, it's that the employees are the best around!

I'd recommend this place for anyone starting out and needs experience, but this is not a company I'd want to establish a career at. Consider leave within a year or 2.

At Spark the work-life balance was very good, and they offer many small benefits that make the day to day much better.

The downside was inconsistent work with little to no promise of full hours every week, even though they hire you promising full time hours.

Management is run in a way to please the top end instead of the bottom end, the actual workers, for example certain projects would have no material ready but you’d be scheduled at the site twiddling fingers until something happens.

Great as a stepping stone but if you’re looking for something long-lasting look elsewhere, this employer does not have that quality and I don’t see it happening in the near future either.



Management at Spark Power operates on a "do as I say, not as I do" mentality. They talk a big game about safety until it impacts the bottom line. you’re on your own. It is an environment where hard work and attempts to improve broken systems are met with hostility rather than support.
​The most telling part of the culture is the lack of transparency. I’ve had management explicitly state they refuse to put instructions or feedback in writing specifically so it can’t be "used against them" later. This creates a culture of zero accountability where field staff are "thrown to the wolves" while upper management protects themselves.
​The support structure is non-existent. Instead of actual leadership, you get a group of "jokers" reminiscing about how skilled they used to be while the current operations suffer. If you value your career, your safety, or your sanity, look elsewhere

Typical day is driving to site or shop to load equipment and installing or troubleshooting equipment.
Didn't learn anything new, just redid the same training for the thousandth time.
Managers are unable or unwilling to schedule consistent work and they have absolutely zero interest in improving workflow or value in the work.
If you want an easy job where you spend 8 hours doing 2-4 hours of actual work per day it's not a bad job. If you have any skill or ambition it will be wasted or taken advantage of. If you do accept work with this company DO NOT INVEST ANY OF YOUR OWN TIME OR MONEY INTO IMPROVING THE WORK. They are too cheap even to buy a fold up table to work on the laptop from on site and will be upset with you if you find a more efficient or less expensive way of doing ANYTHING. 


Good place to get experience in the industrial field for anyone who hasn't worked industrial before. Management has deep rooted issues that reach all the way to the core of the company. You have to lick a lot of boots to get any advancement in the company even though they tell you there are so many opportunities... that is reserved to the spineless yes men (and the members of the dutch church). The turnover rate is extremely high because they refuse to pay a liveable wage and consider their extremely low wages "competitive". Management is always lying to the poor lower class workers who are the foundation of the company. The company is run by investment bankers who are more concerned with quarterly assets then they are about paying their suppliers or giving real bonuses to thier employees. Would not work here again!
