Working for the WHRA felt like I gave up any freedom I had as a human being. Since the over haul of hours it is so easy to burn out. If you want a full time job most positions require you to work 7 days in a row with awful rotations like days to nights. The PC government really messed up the health system and it felt as though staff really weren’t appreciated or recognized. The union can only go so far as to fighting for you. They have and will continue to lose hundreds of great employees each year from burn out. Working within a hospital for the WRHA  has major issues with hierarchy. If you are not a nurse or a doctor you are treated poorly. Often taking the brunt of disgruntlement from nurses especially and certain doctors or even management. It took a huge toll on my mental health and self perception. 

It’s a very busy medical facility, you need to be totally focused , no time for idealism, this is a serious medical facility.
You are expected to know your job and responsibilities, show respect to others, be willing to increase your everyday knowledge, it a very challenging place, but it also makes you proud being a part of the medical team. Management is ok, , easy to obtain answers, even if you think it a dumb question.
Multiculturalism is awesome, and every one is as friendly as ever . The job is not hard, just as long as you’re willing to take orders and carry them out accordingly. You need to pay attention!! 
There is a relaxed lounge for staff to sit and talk about almost anything, lots of potluck almost once a month!!

I would transcribe patient report. Distribute periodicals pertaining to the Microbiology field. I typed the minutes of the meetings and handed them out. I did different agendas. I was given different assignments often which would break up the day.
I leaned how to figure out the basic terminology of microbiology which was very tough.
The co-workers who were lab techs were generally very nice when I had to inquire to them how to spell a word.
The hardest part of the job was that I was kept isolated and this made it very difficult to learn terminology one had never before heard of. I also spent weekends at home binding books for the lab staff.
The most enjoyable part of the job was the department heads were usually away doing rounds so I was able to complete my work on my own time and have it ready for them by the time they were finished doing the rounds.

I have been trained for many jobs working in the kitchen at the hospital. Most of the shifts, you first prepare your food/beverages for serving on the belt. Then either you will be serving a certain menu items onto the tray, or you will be a runner for the belt line, grabbing missed items, and restocking their food. Next usually comes working in the dish room. That can either be removing the dirty plates, and garbage, or working on the clean end, putting away the clean dishes. After we go back working on the belt for lunch time service, same idea as breakfast, and then back to the dish room after break. Working at the hospital has been a great experience, constantly learning, and seeing new things everyday. Great employer to work for. Most enjoyable part of this job would be getting to deliver nourishments up to the patients.

Working in a psychiatric hospital can change from day to day. There are a wide variety of patients that come to our unit. Some quite pleasant and willing to work on bettering their lives, others quite angry and not wanting to be in hospital. The staff are great at trying to provide a safe and helpful environment. Management works really good with the staff and are always trying to better things
I have learned many things working with such a diverse population of people. Many dealing with a life crisis which has opened my eyes to the many different lifestyles people are currently living. The key aspect is to work as a team, and learn how to communicate and get to their level. All to promote healthier/safer lifestyles and proper living situations

I like helping people and caring about their needs. I had worked with palliative patients, and i liked to be with them and make their last few days comfortable and enjoyable. I liked to communicate thoroughly to the patents express each others feelings to make them feel more at home. I liked to listen to all their stories and understand them more, so that i could help them. I liked to make a lot of friend with the staff and patients and hopefully make all their days better in the best way possible. I learned a lot of things from my co-workers and even some patients, and hopefully taught them everything i know.I enjoyed working in St. Boniface Hospital.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Overall, stress level was expected, acceptable levels for patient care environment.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Wonderful. 
St Boniface Hospital defined, promoted and followed their missions and goals.
As a faith based hospital they respected all faiths and beliefs

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My day was full, active all day in  a positive way.

Every Day was a challenge to prove better than everyday in terms of sales and productive reach for fund raising.
The best way to clear stocks and give away not selling items with little presentation.
The management is excellent and well oriented for a patient oriented environment as well as commercial standards.
The things to be taken in account on big events to avoid mishaps from violent to crowded customers.
During every shift getting to work and train new and enthusiastic volunteers.

Stay away from St B, it is a very toxic and stressful environment throughout the hospital including Corporate Office. There’s a culture of a”figure it out” that is being told to new staff when asking for training or even help. Our leadership accepts this type of behaviour because they do it themselves. The Corporate Office is dysfunctional and they could come visit us on the wards every week and it still wouldn’t change because they are part of the problem. My advice would be to not work here. I am searching for something else. I learned how not to treat others.

I worked at St. Boniface Hospital for 10 years in various departments such as Medical Records, Photography, and Emergency Department. The Emergency Department staff members became my second family. We worked as a team at work. I learned how to deal with many situations that may occur in my life. The hardest part of the job was dealing with children because so many things that they have to deal with at a young age was difficult to watch. Overall I enjoyed my job and hated to leave because we relocated to another province.
