A typical day at work for registered nursing staff: Notifying management of compliance issues; management not acknowledging issues exist or have the knowledge/experience to recognize they are issues; compliance then coming in and issuing orders that management were already notified of; and then registered nursing staff receiving memos that staff should have addressed issues. This ongoing cycle is frustrating because it allows management to never take accountability for delivery of nursing care. 

Absolutely no follow-up or acknowledgement of concerns from staff by management. Human resources not recognizing that management  is the reason this building is failing to care for residents properly.

No front line clinical educator available to do 1:1 skills training/mentoring. Staff will email managers and education department for weeks asking for clinical education with no response or limited effort to provide to staff. 

If you need a job, this facility will hire anyone without investigating if they have a nursing license or basic nursing competency to work. Very frustrating for hard-working experienced registered staff who continually report to management concerns regarding incompetent registered staff (as a duty to their own license) and management not addressing the safety and welfare of vulnerable elderly clients by allowing registered staff to continue to supervise care provided to clients or not provide timely essential medical treatment to clients.

The hardest part of the job: The stress of the dangerous unsafe position you are forced into when being on shift with an incompetent co-worker (or one allowed to work with no license) that directly places your own nursing license at risk, and management not caring because the staff levels look good on paper. 

It is appalling that this facility is allowed to get away with this,and more appalling that it is hidden from families and clients.

Most enjoyable part of the job: Making it through the shift, going home at the end of the day.

I could never recommend to anyone that they work here unless they are desperate for a job.

under staffed, underpaid, however continuing to add more work for front line health care staff. No appreciation for staff just blame pointed to staff as this building has been a failure of a project from the organization. Staff morale is low because of all of this. Management pushes away concerns of staff. Residents are at risk here and if you are a registered staff member I would say most likely is your license - unless you want to fill out a workload grievance every shift don't start here. I have worked at several other sites at SJCG and HRM is the worst by a long shot - every other site is actually great. Every job has pros and cons but at this point as an employee the only reason I am here is to benefit the residents I know and enjoy (when I can talk to them for all of 2 minutes due to workload) and because I need a job to survive. I actually feel there is no pro to working here at all - as it mentally exhausts me and stresses me out, i leave feeling i have never done enough. I feel sorry for the people who live here. Staff do their best and are treated like dirt. This building in no doubt one of the biggest failures in Canadian Health Care History.

This company is awful. How they treat their employees, patients and families is all the same.  Don’t get me wrong the majority of the staff from housekeeping to doctors are wonderful at doing what they can for patients. The company forgets that staff and patients are people. We all know the problem starts at the top of the top but you shouldn’t be referred to as problematic when advocating for your family members BASIC care like bathing, toileting and not being in a wheelchair for more than eight hours.  I’ve seen this company handle these issues from both perspectives (many times professionally and several including currently personally) and I have been disappointed with the initial responses every-time.  You shouldn’t have to be the “squeaky” wheel regarding anyones BASIC care and it’s sad that is what staff tell families to be just that to get these things accomplished. All that said every site I’ve worked or had family at have some pretty amazing front line staff. They work so hard and this company would retain more staff if they were treated properly

What stands out most is the people. From day one, colleagues have been welcoming, supportive, and collaborative, creating a workplace culture where you truly feel part of a team. Walking down the hall and having everyone say “hello” is a simple gesture, but it speaks volumes about the respect and kindness embedded in the everyday environment. This is something I did not experience in previous workplaces.

My manager and coworkers take the time to acknowledge contributions, and there is a genuine sense that staff are appreciated for the skills, ideas, and effort they bring. This recognition, combined with the organization’s commitment to high-quality client care, makes it a place I am proud to recommend.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Watching the smile on the clients  faces when they have music players come in for them. Bring clean clothes to their rooms. Working with some great people!! Working in laundry  puts a toll  on your body, but I love making them a happy place  called home

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Most stressful part is working with people that don't care or want to work

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I wish I had started earlier.  They have a great pension.  You can work yourself up the latter. Also you can  work in different  areas.  People need to work as a team, to get a great days work done.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working in laundry  is lots of lifting,  pulling and organizing.  We do most days 45000 pounds of laundry.  I'm a multi tasting  person. If I'm done my work,  I'm off to help other areas  get caught  up. Love to stay busy., makes the day go by faster.

A typical day at work is long hours with no breaks due to the facility running on severe staff shortages. You are not provided competent education on site which places staff and residents at risk. You must be experienced and have excellent clinical and assessment skills, as there is no support for new hires.  There is a high turnover of management, very young and inexperienced with long-term care; not only lacking the skills and education to support staff, but have no real desire to do so. The employees are very hard-working, however frustrated with low morale, which leads to many walking of the job, and bullying. There is insidious racism toward indigenous and visible minority employees. The hardest part of the job is going home knowing that residents are not cared for properly. The most enjoyable part of the job is caring for the residents if you like working with the elderly. DO NOT WORK HERE.

HRM- yes it really is as bad as they say it is. Third party management has given all the tools for quality care delivery to the administrator, DOCs, and clinical managers. You would think HRM management would improve with this assistance... they don't even have to create process of care delivery! They are only tasked to be accountable for its implementation. And that's the problem- they refuse to be accountable, it's a disgrace. June 2019 compliance report details how processes are in place however in every incident of neglect the administrator and management fail to act. Yet, they are all STILL employed, and registered staff are fired, forced out, reprimanded, or lose their license in witch hunts that have no purpose but to hide the incompetence of management. The building has skeletal staffing ran by casual and agency staff- it's a disaster. If you value your nursing license and career stay clear of the place.

Unbelievable. I cannot believe a place could be so horrendous to the staff that go in every day to care for the residence. So many issues that come down to management. I've seen nurses and support staff crying in hallways and getting berated and yelled at by managers who basically tell them that they don't care if they're stressed. Bad nurses walk all over their support staff and, when reported, managers don't care because they "trust the registered staff more than support staff due to medical training". It is a sad excuse of a building and of a place for or elderly population to call home. Be prepared if you work there because bad families, bad managers, and bas scheduling crew run the place. You'll be lucky to get you holidays 3 years from your start date!

Horrible organization. Don’t walk away from this organization, run. Warning for all registered staff. Horrible management. With any complains, they immediately find fault with all registered staff that were on that shift. Down to the office in front of director of care for suspension with out pay. Non existent union support. Always short staffed. RN can have anywhere from two floors (4 units, 128 residents) up to whole building (almost 500 residents). Managers can’t be found when problems occur and will never answer your questions directly or respond to your emails. Will not hesitate to forward complaints to College of Nurses. You will lose your licence to practice in this organization. Constant stream of agency staff. Most don’t even stay 3 months. 

Overall, it's hard to judge SJCG overall because every team is so different. Who your manager is changes everything. Overall, the organization is well organized and they make an effort to communicate openly with staff and encourage collaboration. That said, there's a mixed history here of hardworking managers taking the blame (and being fired) for VP level decisions or managers getting away with the bare minimum without consequences. They reorganize departments far too often, which is a good and bad thing. I do appreciate that they're open to rethinking things to improve. But it's a lot of whiplash.
