St. Stephens Community House

This was a temporary to permanent position.  I was offered the position but turned it down for another position.  The day would be filled with minute taking, calendar management, daily communication with nine unit directors.  Assisting board members.  Assisting marketing in their events and invitations.  Attending events for registration and welcoming government officials and honored guests.  I learned that everyone in life is important, no matter where they come from or their financial position.  Management was amazing; working as a team is so important to them.  Valuing their employees and supporting when needed.  The hardest part of this job was the commute from Brampton to Toronto.  I enjoyed every moment of the day, it was busy and demanding yet you knew you were a valued part of the equation.

The work itself is manageable and rewarding. The clients are super appreciative of the services offered, and there are a wide variety of services! Some workers seem to have a prejudice of some sort (encountered SWERF/TERF/classism) seeing as most of the workers come from money. I finally left after an employee harassed and outed me. Other organizations I’ve worked with have employees who are kinder and more tolerant towards coworkers. Overall, services offered are comprehensive, accessible, and valuable to the public, but the employees really can’t relate to what it’s like to be in need of these services. I still enjoyed my time regardless.

All the staff and all the people in need of the services offered. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Having close relationships with clients and than only to find out they’ve passed away. It’s hard emotionally. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very positive and supportive of people who are suffering. Senior Staff are always available for peers. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Fast paced and intense but fun. It’s great to be of service to all.

Very professional  and nurturing work environment.

There was no stress for me at this job

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Usually busy providing care for the children

Difficult management, director is racist. Micromanaging everything makes you feel uncomfortable and takes away all confidence you have as an RECE. Strict dress code, not enough time for observations & planning weekly. Not enough staff for trips outings making it unsafe for children and staff. Overall needs a new director and management that listens to their staff & parents.

I’ve really liked working at and for st. Stephens/the neighbourhood group. 
Staff and supervisors are helpful and always willing to get you what you need to do well there. Additional training is offered. Great place. Loved my time there. 

A wonderful place to work and learn new skills in case management and documentation. The majority of my work was involved with facilitating art therapy and mindfulness classes to homeless men and women in the community.

It is a very enjoyable place to work. The various ethnicities allow for learning experiencies in different cultures. My coworkers are great people to work with and are very helpful when a new employee is hired. They make it easy for both children and parents to adapt to the centre.

I love and greatly enjoy working at St.Stephens. I look forward to being there and would 7 days a week if they needed me. I feel a sense of purpose and love being a part of the community and helping others.Thank you St.Stephens for giving me this opportunity!
