A typical day at work consists of being handed a stack of PM's that you may or may not be able to do depending upon production. You will also be told about various issues that may have arisen the night, week, year, decade before that are suddenly a high priority. If you show initiative and do a good job expect to have all of the work load dumped onto you. The supervisors and foremen... some are good some are not... most have no idea what they are asking to be done. Production seems to be infallible, everything is a maintenance issue, according to them... including pressing the wrong button on their controls. Don't expect anyone to actually know what is going on or how things work. "Not my job" is king here. Parts are hard to come by, it seems they'd rather spend 80,000 dollars in a month's time than $500 this week to prevent a breakdown. Communication is next to non-existent.

The shift pattern is, in my opinion, very unpleasant. A lot of people seem to think it is great... I find the transition between days and nights is awful in such a short period of time. I much prefer straight days, but it is seniority based choosing, followed by a lack of trained people... so expect to do it, probably, depending on your department.

Monday Tuesday Days, Wednesday Thursday Off, Friday Saturday Sunday Nights, Monday Tuesday Off, Wednesday Thursday Days, Friday Saturday Sunday Off, Monday Tuesday Nights, etc etc.

Enjoyable... most of the people are nice. You can usually sit on your butt all day and shirk your responsibilities if you want, it seems. 

Payroll makes mistakes far too often. Check your pay stub.

Trades are underpaid. Which contributes to the lazy culture I think. That being said you definitely don't have to work hard to earn your wage most days. Don't expect wages to increase either, 2/3 of the union is production and they look out for themselves. 

Don't worry there are no real consequences once you are past your probationary period, so if you want a job apply. You can be totally useless after your 6 months and still have a job.

Don't worry about using your knowledge to give suggestions for improvement. It won't be heeded 80% of the time. And when they do use it, it won't be acknowledged. 

On a positive note there are some upgrades being done.

The paycheck was really good and the work wasn't too bad.

The rotating Continental shifts

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Everyone is very nice, they all care about your wellbeing and if you're okay and how you're feeling. If you're working on good conditions to the best of the ability. Everyone is so willing to help you out and training so so good in classrooms and in the floor. They make sure you are prepared for everything 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I would punch in at the gate, go to my locker and get dressed, walk down to the scrap yard. Sometimes there would be trucks waiting (sometimes not) I would get paperwork from trucker, grab iPad, walk up to balcony to look into truck to inspect scrap. Either accept load or not. Locate spot for driver to drop their load. Inspect pathway and remove anything that could pop their tire. Supervise and direct them backing into spot and dropping scrap load. And repeat. Working in all weather conditions. Only downside was there was no heat relief. Some days I was outside all day some days I was only outside for a little bit.

The place has the worst toxicity I have ever experienced in my 25+ year work life.  WAY too many managers, 90% of whom are completely unqualified and unhelpful..and the overloaded upper management are way too busy micromanaging the  floor supervisors that they basically do zero long term managing.  Nothing is ever fixed, safety is a joke..and the union that you pay $2000/yr. for are completely MIA.  Run away and work somewhere better!!

Coming from a distance a typical work day is 12 hour shift plus 2 hours travel.
The good thing is you work half a year on 12 hour shift. 3 on then 2 off, 2 on then 3 off. Benefits could be better to match other companies in the same industry.
The hardest part of the job is the weather and down days tearing machinery apart.
I did learn a lot working several different jobs. Profit share made everything worth while.

Working at Stelco has given me a lot of skills. On a regular shift you are required to maintain all systems at the Hot Strip Mill. There is a large number of Hydraulic, lube and grease systems. I was the go to guy on our shift for years which required troubleshooting to get the Mill back up and running. I worked there for 30 plus years and have to say it is still a good place to work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
For the most part the people are great to work with.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Limited shop tools and equipment so there was a fair bit of make it work type of maintenance. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
With a few exceptions the people were great to work with.

Awful experience. Safety is just a word, not practiced. Supervision is inept and half the time you’re working for someone extremely unqualified. Upper management berates middle and lower management on a daily basis cause a trickle down effect of being miserable every moment you’re there. Avoid this place if you can

The environment is one of the dirtiest I have ever encountered. The management is inexperienced and cowardly. The group that maintains the cranes is the only one with a decent supervisor and good organization. 

Between contract negotiations, strike talk, lay offs and people always talking about you behind they're back It's a good job pays okay but still under industry standards.
Best part is hanging out and doing nothing with the people you can tolerate for 12 hours and sleeping during shifts.


Good place to work not much else in the area to work , so if your in the area of the plant there isn’t much else out there , prepare to get dirty , hot noisy, show up everyday when first hired to what your told don’t cause any problems and you will survive excellent pay ..
