Sterling is a good place to work, the people are pleasant, little drama, social events for the staff, and management is quite laid back if you need time off or an adjustment of work schedule. The duties are not overwhelming and entry level. 

Expectations are explained but management does not come down hard on you, staff knows their expectations and even when management is away on holidays the staff still complete their duties. You won't find one staff carrying the workload, each knows their role.

There is no real hardest part of the job as tasks are not difficult nor is the labour difficult. You should be in decent physical condition though.

There are pizza days, barbeques, and other social events that are attended by many staff.

The one critique I've heard is that there's no room for advancement as this is a family operated business. This is not necessarily true as the family members are already solidified in their positions. The advancement concerns should be placed on the HR and manager instead.

Sterling is bound by a collective agreement which stipulates that they must post upcoming full time positions internally before going external. I don't believe any internal F/T staff ever apply for these positions. These positions are also open to Sterling's part time staff (who are capped at 24 hours a week unless there is a demand in staffing).

Therefore if you're a current part timer, you are entitled to apply for these full time positions and if a full time staff doesn't fill it (which I've yet to see occur) then you may qualify for it. Unfortunately time and time again the part timers who apply are told they they didn't get the position. The position then goes to an external person part time (not full time as was to be the case).

The reasoning for this in my opinion is that the company avoids advancing p/t staff into f/t for pension and benefits. The HR woman has already stated that Sterling prefers new hires as it saves the company money.

I feel that if someone plans to work for Sterling in the long term, they should be seen as part of the family. You do get old and require medications in life. There are also part timers working full time hours (or between 30-40 hours) yet don't receive the benefits.

I believe the process of posting these positions is merely to abide by the collective agreement and there is no intention to ever fill it with a current part timer staff.

The company is good to work for but until they look at their employees as assets to be kept around, I feel it will always be a revolving door of part timers coming and going.

Management could also consider more input from their floor staff regarding changes in the workplace.

The owner of this business is a really good man always frriendly. He even gives out grocery gift cards to all staff at Christmas.

Never been treated with more respect than I have working at Sterling. You are valued, appreciated and heard work never goes unnoticed.

Management is fair and always available to listen to any views or concerns you may have.

They have a fantastic social club that raises funds through coffee sales and 50/50 draws for fun activities including bubble soccer, treat days (fully funded by the social club!), summer barbeques, pizza days, bagel day, 12 days of Christmas give-away prizes, employee kids' gifts AND the super fun annual Christmas Party, where more gifts, prizes and awards are given out! Also, the generous owner, Bob, matches the funds raised in addition to spending more around Christmas time.

Hard work is recognized through bonuses, promotions, raises and extra vacation time (after working 5 years).

The culture is friendly, casual and professional. 

Amazing place to work. Anyone would be lucky to work here! :)

Fixed day shifts. Good flexible working hours in the case of emergencies. Multicultural environment. For labourer, they are paid in the minimum wages. Most probably, there is a little bit chance for career path development within the company. Many of the machines are old. Cooperative team leaders, managers. and HR. Friendly environment. Package benefits including extended healthcare, dental, and life insurance for Full-time employees. Depending on the production department you work for, you may stand up all the time.

The job is entry level so anyone may apply and be hired. Upon hiring, expect no training from leads. Staff will be your own answers. Health and safety issues don't get resolved when you bring them up.

No advancement. Too many employees hired on subsidized wages leading to mass layoffs. No leadership whatsoever.

You have no say into deductions from your pay that go towards social events even if you don't attend them.

I wish I could say more positive but there simply is none.


Pay is minimum wage for most jobs across the floor despite different skill sets.

During a typical day (1:30-6:30) I would typically not have any time restrictions besides shipments to the united states, and would be given free reign (generally) to accomplish a variety of tasks relating to the days product orders. These duties would include (but not limited to):

- Process basic orders through the system and seal them in a shipping envelope
- Organize the next days product into boxes based on company or location to ship
- Enter data regarding worldwide shipments into system
- Sign for incoming delivery of material when managment is occupied

Typically, the company maintains a good volume of orders thru the trained and expert CSRs utilizing the EDI net term system.  While everyone contributes to its productivity, QPED team assures the quality management compliances

The workplace culture is great, it is like a family. 
There are lots varieties in the company but everyone is treated with respect. 
You will never find a culture of blame, instead it is improvement of working process. There are lots of activities in the company, BBQ days, pizza day and there is always cookies in the lunch room. The owner and family are very nice.

Always work to be done, from answering phones, processing orders, filing, and receiving deliveries. Enjoyed working there the Manager is very easy going, great teacher in showing & explaining the why and how to's of the job. Learnt so much about stamps and how to process the ODA stamps, very interesting & informative.

I really like the atmosphere of working at Sterling company, it has a very friendly atmosphere. Everyone is willing to help and make sure you understand how to do it. the best part about  Sterling that there are a lot of different things you can do, as well as supervisors they are very understandable and flexible especially with students.

A great place to work, with a real sense of community, which is instilled by the company president in all his actions. The family owned and operated business boasts many long term employees, great social committee and friendly staff.
